Garassk and Rathorn arrive in the recently-conquered Pullvair, only to find themselves fighting the local guards when a female varanian crosses their path. She informs them that the conquest has been hard on them all, and now she seeks to escape, for she is about to lay eggs. They agree to help take her to a neighboring swamp, but the new lord of Pullvair has no intention of letting them leave so easily.
