Chapter 33. Stop!

“Welcome back Emi, you took longer than expected,” Alberto commented as soon as they entered. “Which one of you is Rafael?”

“We had a few delays. These are Rafael and his husband Darío,” Emilio introduced them. “This is Alberto, Gabriela’s husband. Gabriela is my other teacher who is teaching us self defense and combat. She is also teaching Amelia how to shoot.”

After exchanging greetings, they all decided to do their own stuff. Alberto kept training as his wife had taught him. Rafael went with Emilio, and Darío sat down to watch his husband teach his new student. His husband had not guided him about how to train and would have to wait for Gabriela to come back to start his own training.

“Show me what you know,” Rafael ordered his student as he got ready to teach.

Emilio took his weapons from the backpack, put on his belt and wielded his daggers. The most logical thing to do was to use the replicas, but he had forgotten about them and it was not really his fault. He had received them on that very same day and he had only used them once while being beaten up, an experience he wanted to forget.

Emilio took a deep breath and as soon as he was about to start moving he heard Rafael shout. “Stop! Put your weapons back! Do you want to kill yourself?”

“But I didn’t even start moving!” Emilio complained as he sheathed back the weapons.

“Thank god you didn’t, you would have likely killed yourself if you started moving like that. Were you not learning self defense? You are not even standing stable!”

Emilio was too ashamed to even admit that he didn’t think about applying what Gabriela had taught him during the day. He was about to start moving in the exact same way as he had done before meeting his teacher.

“Be grateful you didn’t try this without me around,” Rafael continued with his scolding.

“But I did, several times. I am getting better!” Emilio tried to explain.

“If you did you would be all sliced up.”

“Well… that might have happened too.”

“Explain yourself,” Rafael finally gave up.

After hearing about Emilio’s regeneration and his previous training days his new teacher couldn’t believe what he heard.

“Let me see if I got this straight. You moved with your daggers without any care, slicing yourself one time after another and you just kept healing your deadly cuts?” Rafael double checked.

“Exactly,” Emilio exclaimed proudly, but his teacher’s face made him start to doubt his own training.

“I don’t know why you are so proud. You are lucky you chose Vitality and have those Skills. Also, you will have to forget all of what you learned with this method. Whatever you think your improvement is, it is not and you will only hurt you,” Rafael instructed. “Why did you not check the internet to learn how to use them? Any random internet video would have been better than what you did!”

“I was following a few movies! Though, now that I think about it, maybe video tutorials might have been much better,” Emilio admitted.

“Movies? Really? Movies are your source? I don’t even know what to say about that,” Rafael sighed, making Emelio even more ashamed. Even more when he thought that at the very beginning he was not even following movies, but moving randomly.

Rafael took a few deep breaths before he continued. “At the very least, I know that you are not afraid of pain and you can really heal. I might decide to train you with me using real daggers in combat.”

“Why would you be the only one who uses the weapons?”

“Because I don’t want to die yet. You are the only person I know that is not afraid of a dagger attack. Given that you can heal it will be useful for you to face real weapons, but not as you stand right now. Please, tell me you have something non lethal to train with.”

“Yes I ordered a replica made of wood. Mili actually sent two sets so you can also wield one.”

“Then why the hell did you pick up your real daggers right now?” Rafael scolded him again, with Emilio unable to answer. “Nevermind, at least someone here has a little bit of common sense if you have two sets. Just bring them here so I can start from the very beginning.”

Emilio went to the side of the gym where he had stored them after his last training. He was really ashamed by what his new teacher said and about his lack of common sense.

He was back with four wooden daggers in no time and handed one pair.

“Good craftsmanship,” Rafael praised, “and quite durable, though we might need something even more durable if we upgrade our Body Stat. I will keep Milagros updated about this.”

After evaluating the daggers he turned towards his student, who was holding one dagger on each hand. “Why are you wielding both? You don’t even know how to use one dagger and want to use both at the same time?”

“But my weapon is double daggers!” Emilio complained, once again doubting his way of doing things.

“Yes, and it was smart to ask for double weapons. But how do you think someone learns how to use two weapons at the same time? First one hand, then the other, and after that you start learning to use both together. It is not easy to use two weapons,” Rafael explained. “Now, which one is your dominant hand?”

Emilio chose to start his dagger training with his right hand and finally started to learn how to use his weapon. He also understood quite fast why Rafael stopped him even before he moved one finger. Apparently, his whole body had to be stable for him to even be able to start using the dagger. Rafael spent a good five minutes correcting his posture before even showing him anything else, which was just one movement he had to repeat for over ten minutes before moving to the next one.

He was slowly starting to learn how to attack and defend with one dagger. It might not have been two daggers as he was expecting, but he was learning one step at a time.

The training kept going for a few hours straight, with constant corrections from his teacher. They only stopped when the girls came back from the shooting range.
