CHAPTER 18 — THE ABYSS WATCHES
Paris thought he was the only anomaly in the system.
The gods had just proven him wrong.
The rain finally stopped.
Clouds drifted apart slowly, revealing streaks of pale morning sunlight breaking across the city skyline.
People returned to the sidewalks.
Cars filled the streets again.
The storm was over.
But Paris knew something else had begun.
He stepped out of the alley and back onto the main road, water dripping from his jacket.
His phone vibrated again.
The divine chat had resumed.
Blood Saint: Secondary probability disturbance confirmed.
Goddess of Fate: Origin point unidentified.
[Abyssal Observer]: Deviation magnitude increasing.
Paris stared at the screen.
“They’re talking about the other anomaly.”
Another message appeared.
[Thunder Sovereign]: The anomaly remains within the metropolitan region.
Goddess of Fate: Yet the new deviation originates elsewhere.
Paris’s chest tightened.
Elsewhere.
Another message appeared.
Blood Saint: The system cannot support multiple variables.
Paris whispered quietly.
“Apparently it can.”
Stolen story; please report.
The chat continued.
[Abyssal Observer]: The disturbance pattern differs from the primary anomaly.
Demon Emperor Baal: Of course it does.
Paris frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Another message appeared.
Demon Emperor Baal: The first anomaly alters fate.
A pause.
Then the next line appeared.
Demon Emperor Baal: The second does not.
Paris’s pulse quickened.
If it didn’t alter fate—
Then what was it doing?
His phone buzzed again.
Goddess of Fate: Structural tremor detected.
Paris froze.
Tremor.
He remembered the feeling from earlier.
The hum beneath the lattice.
The thing that had spoken to him in the darkness below reality.
Another message appeared.
Blood Saint: Lattice tension increasing.
[Abyssal Observer]: The disturbance originates beneath causal architecture.
Paris’s breath caught.
Beneath.
“It’s the same thing.”
The remnant.
The presence beneath the lattice.
The thing that had survived the previous collapse.
The chat continued.
[Thunder Sovereign]: Sub-structural pressure detected.
Demon Emperor Baal: Not impossible.
Another message followed.
Paris stared at the screen.
Familiar.
The conversation continued.
Demon Emperor Baal: Something beneath the lattice has awakened before.
Paris’s pulse quickened.
Before.
The prior structure.
The collapse.
Another message appeared.
[Abyssal Observer]: The disturbance does not originate from the anomaly.
[Thunder Sovereign]: Then what causes it?
The chat paused.
Several seconds passed.
Then—
Paris whispered softly.
“It remembers.”
His phone buzzed again.
Goddess of Fate: Structural instability increasing.
Blood Saint: Probability recalculation failing.
Paris looked up at the sky.
It looked perfectly normal.
Clear.
Quiet.
But beneath that calm surface—
Something enormous was moving.
The chat continued.
[Abyssal Observer]: The disturbance reacts to the anomaly.
Paris swallowed.
“Me.”
Another message appeared.
[Thunder Sovereign]: The variable and the sub-structure are connected.
Goddess of Fate: That connection threatens the lattice.
Paris leaned against a nearby wall.
His head spun.
The gods weren’t just watching him anymore.
They were watching what reacted to him.
Then—
The chat paused again.
A new message appeared slowly.
From a name that had spoken only rarely.
[The Architect]: Structural convergence approaching.
Paris stared at the screen.
Convergence.
Another message appeared beneath it.
[The Architect]: Observation parameters expanding.
Paris’s chest tightened.
“Great.”
The Architect itself was getting involved again.
The next message appeared.
[The Architect]: Both anomalies must be evaluated.
Paris exhaled slowly.
Both.
Meaning him—
And the thing beneath the lattice.
The chat fell silent.
The city moved around him.
Normal.
Unaware.
But Paris could feel it now.
That low hum beneath reality.
Stronger than before.
Responsive.
Aware.
Watching him just as carefully as the gods were.
His phone vibrated again.
A final message appeared.
[Abyssal Observer]: The second anomaly moves.
Paris looked around instinctively.
“Where?”
The next line appeared.
[Abyssal Observer]: It approaches the variable.
Paris’s breath caught.
Approaches.
Meaning one thing.
The thing beneath the lattice—
Was coming for him.
