Chapter 79: A Serious Illness
No one had expected that Qiu Ye would come down with a high fever that very night.
Qiu's mother and father were startled awake by Qiu Ye's loud cries, only to find that the child who was fine during the day had suddenly developed a fever at night.
Qiu's mother touched the girl's scorching body, anxiously saying "What's going on? She was fine during the day, wasn't she? Didn't seem like she had a cold either."
"Never mind that for now, we have to think of a way to bring down the child's body temperature." Mr. Qiu saw the little girl's small face burning red and he was anxious too, they had to think of a way quickly, a high fever in children could possibly damage their brain.
"You go get some white wine, I'll rub the girl's body to see if it can bring down the fever." This is a folk remedy often used by ordinary people, which is very effective.
Qiu's father quickly took out his bottle of liquor and poured some into a small bowl, which he handed to Qiu's mother. She then lifted up Qiu Ye's clothes and began to repeatedly rub the liquor onto her palms, armpits, chest, and other areas.
Qiu Ye lay in bed, unable to calm down. She was having a nightmare. In the dream, Teacher Han was grabbing her hair and pulling it outwards with all his might, saying: "You didn't want to come to school, did you? Now you're caught by me, do you still think you can run away? Let's see where you can run to, I'll deal with you from now on."
Qiu Ye's two hands were on top of Mr. Han's large hand, shouting: "Let go, don't grab my hair, I'll go home and tell my dad, mom, and brother to come beat you up! Waaah, let go quickly, it hurts! Mommy, save me!"
In her dream, Qiu Ye felt as if she had returned to her previous life. She was so helpless in her solitary fight against the demon teacher. Her head hurt and she wanted to strike back, but she couldn't see the person who was harming her. All she could do was wildly flail her arms at the darkness and shout loudly.
Qiu Ye cried and wailed nonstop in her nightmare, making it unbearable for those around her. Qiu's mother heard the girl's cries and didn't understand what was wrong. It must have been that she got scared at school during the day, which is why she had a fever and a bad dream at night.
She was heartbroken, following the girl and shedding tears together. While wiping the child's body with wine, she kept comforting her, "Little Ye, don't cry, mom won't let you go to school anymore, we'll just stay at home, mom will raise you, we won't go anywhere."
Qiu's father watched the mother and daughter crying and making a fuss beside him. It was really a big headache, they didn't know how to make it better, but finally, amidst the chaos, he grasped a bit of sanity. He thought that the child couldn't just keep burning like this, she needed medicine, she needed to bring down her fever.
"You go give the child some white wine first, don't stop, I'll go downstairs to Fang Ge's place to see if there's any fever-reducing medicine." After saying that, she hastily opened the door and went downstairs.
Qiu's mother was heartbroken. She didn't quite catch what he said, but the movements in her hands never stopped. She had made up her mind that if her child got into trouble, she would go to school and find that Korean teacher to settle the score.
And then Qiu Dad, in the middle of the night, went to knock on Fang Haibo's door. When Fang Haibo got up and opened the door, he saw that Qiu Yanlin was in a hurry and asked: "What's wrong with you, Yanlin? What happened?"
"Brother Fang, Xiaoye has a high fever. Do you have any antipyretics at home?" Qiu Dad thought that if they didn't have any here, he would ride his bike to the hospital to buy some. Although the hospital was a bit far away, it was still better than just waiting around at home.
"It seems so. I'll let your sister-in-law find it for you." Fang Haibo went into the house to ask his wife to find the medicine, and he came out to ask about the situation.
"Yanlin, wasn't Xiaoye fine this afternoon? How did she get a fever in the middle of the night, is it a cold?"
"It doesn't seem like it, just now she was talking nonsense, saying don't grab her hair, it hurts and all that. I think maybe she got scared at school during the day. You say this kid usually has a big temper, how come she's so scared this time? It's not even a big deal." Although Mr. Qiu complained with his mouth, his face was full of heartache, he felt heartache when he saw his child getting sick.
"Nonsense, you don't think about it, just because the child is brave, she's only a nine-year-old kid, when has she ever seen such people?" Fang Haibo also furrowed his brow.
Qiu's father just nodded randomly and didn't refute.
At this time, Zhao Shuyan took out a box of medicine from the house and said directly without handing it to Qiu Dad: "Let's go, I'll take a look too. I'm worried about Little Ye."
Then she went upstairs first.
When I saw Xiaoye, her face was flushed red, her eyes were slightly closed, and she didn't know whether she was asleep or awake. Her hands were waving in the air, shouting and screaming. Qiu Ma sat on the edge of the bed, softly comforting the child, while repeatedly rubbing a bottle of white wine in her hand.
Everyone came in without saying a word, first bringing over a cup of warm water, coaxing the child to take the antipyretic medicine. Not long after, it was unclear whether the antipyretic medicine had taken effect or the rubbing with white wine had worked, but Qiu Ye's small face gradually lost its redness and she stopped shouting loudly, becoming much quieter. The two mothers kept feeling her forehead with their hands, finally sensing that her temperature had dropped slightly, and only then did their hearts begin to calm down a bit.
Qiu Ye slept soundly after taking the antipyretic medicine, and when she woke up in the morning, her whole body felt sore, her linen clothes were damp, and there was a faint smell of white wine in the air.
She felt an urgent need to urinate, lifted the quilt and prepared to get out of bed to go to the toilet to solve her physiological needs. However, due to the cold air in the room and the slightly damp clothes on her body, she shivered. She muttered to herself that if she had money this lifetime, she would definitely install an air conditioner at home, making it warm and cozy on these chilly days without heating.
Barefoot and wearing slippers, she rushed out of the bedroom. When she finally finished and came out of the bathroom, she happened to run into Qiu's mother, who had come out to check on the noise.
"You child, on such a cold day, how come you didn't put on more clothes when you got up? What if you get a fever again?" Mrs. Qiu scolded with her words, but her hands touched the girl's forehead to check if she still had a fever.
Qiu Ye looked at her mother in confusion and asked, "Mom, why are you still at home? Aren't you going to make tofu today?" How strange! Her mom was a diligent person. Since she started making tofu, she had been setting up her stall every day, rain or shine. As she always said, as long as she was alive and able to move, the tofu stall would never stop. What's going on now?
Qiu's mother looked at the girl's outfit, frowned and chased her back to the house, saying: "You go back to the room and change your clothes first. The clean undergarments are all on the bed, put them on quickly and come out for dinner. You were still running a fever last night, now you're shivering and wearing so little, running around everywhere. If you get a fever again tonight, no one will take care of you."
Qiu Ye's body was indeed a bit cold, so she quickly slipped into her own room, hid under the covers and changed out of her damp underwear, then put on the woolen sweater and pants beside her. Only then did she remember what her mother had said just now. It seemed that she had a fever last night, but she didn't know it herself, she just felt like she had a nightmare, and when she woke up in the morning, she couldn't remember anything.
"What are you still dawdling in the house for? The meal is going to get cold, hurry up and put on your clothes to come out and eat." Qiu's mother shouted from the dining hall after waiting for such a long time without seeing her daughter coming out.
"Alright, alright." Qiu Ye hastily put on her slippers and got out of bed to go eat. Her stomach was a bit hungry, didn't they say that when you're sick, you need energy to fight off the illness? She urgently needed energy right now.
"Hurry up and eat, it's still hot." Qiu's mother took out a small bowl from the thermos and placed it in front of Qiu Ye.
Qiu Ye took one look and saw that it was an egg custard, let out a cheer, picked up the spoon and started eating happily. The treatment of this patient is really good, able to eat mom's handmade egg custard.
"After you finish eating, Mom will take you to your aunt's house. Your aunt is at home today and can take care of you nearby. Whatever you want to eat, just tell your aunt. Mom will go to the tofu workshop and come back at noon." Aunt Qiu was going to make tofu for the university cafeteria, which couldn't be stopped. This morning, the child's father had already done the preliminary work, and she was just going to finish it up.
Qiu Ye nodded understandingly, she wasn't a little kid anymore, and had already reached the age where she needed her parents to accompany her.
Went downstairs to Fang's house, Zhao Shuyan took care of Xiaoye with meticulous care. Xiaoye lay in bed reading a book, and she sat beside her, satisfying all of Xiaoye's needs at any time.
At noon, everyone was eating at Fang's house. When Qiu Feng came back from school, he secretly approached Qiu Ye and mysteriously opened his large sports jacket to show his sister the good things inside.
Qiu Ye was speechless about his brother's series of actions, which looked just like those of a pervert when put together.
Qiu Feng didn't know what his sister was thinking, he happily stuffed a large bottle of drink into her quilt and whispered: "Wait until this afternoon when no one is around, you can drink it then." After thinking for a moment, he added another sentence: "Just leave a little bit for me, I'll drink it again when I come back tonight."
In Qiu Feng's mind, the best treatment when he was ill was to be able to drink a bottle of white pear beverage. So he would use his sister's pocket money to buy a bottle from the grocery store downstairs and sneak it back home after school.
Qiu Ye touched the cool glass bottle with her hand, but her heart was warm. This time she got sick, she found that her family treated her too well. Her mother didn't go to work and accompanied her, her stepmother had been giving her delicious food since morning, and now her brother was also taking care of her so much. It could be said that she received the highest level of treatment in the family.
Qiu Ye stayed at home, sleeping and eating for three days, and her illness was cured early on. However, she never heard the adults' opinions about attending Mr. Han's class, which made her feel a bit anxious.
She lay in bed thinking to herself, what's going on here? Even her aunt had seen Mr. Han's violent behavior, and with her own shift change, it should be a done deal. Plus, with this sudden illness of hers, the shift change was basically settled. So why hadn't anyone told her the news yet?
