Chapter 20

  Kara stepped down the hall towards the blue light spilling out from the kitchen, it was 4AM, she had been asleep and was wearing a large green t-shirt with The Daily Planet logo on the chest, and a pair of red hipsters, her feet slapped quietly on the floor on the floor as she stepped into the kitchen, Rachel stood in the light of the open fridge, she had a partially eaten sandwich in 1 hand and a bagel in between her teeth, she was wearing a black undershirt and a pair of black and white volleyball shorts, along with a pair of red tinted glasses.

  “What are you doing?” Kara asked, relaxing a little,

  “I was hungry,” Rachel answered, her face turned red, ”And I couldn’t sleep”

  “Nothings gonna happen to you, you’re safe now” Kara assured her, taking a step closer,

  “They won’t shut up” She mumbled,

  “Who?” Kara asked, Rachel avoided her eyes,

  “Nothing” Rachel said, drawing into herself, Kara noticed that she was shaking, she reached out and took hold of Rachel’s hands,

  “Whatever it is it’s gonna be ok” She said softly, Rachel’s eyes turned to meet hers, Kara could see that she was fighting tears, “If you want I can keep you company” She offered,

  “I don’t know” Rachel said reluctantly,

  “Come on, it’ll be fun, like a sleepover” That made Rachel smile for a second,

  “Ok.”

  Kara laid on her side next to Rachel, she was looking at her silhouette, the curtains had been changed to block any light from outside, so there was a blur between the wall and her silhouette,

  “Thank you Kara” Rachel said, quietly,

  “Yeah, no problem” Kara said with a smile, there was a moment of silence, before Rachel broke it again,

  “Kara” She said,

  “Yeah” Kara answered,

  “Is it ok if I move closer?” Rachel asked,

  “Yes” Rachel shuffled closer till Kara could feel her warm breath, Kara reached forward and pulled Rachel against her, Rachel snuggled into her, her breath slowly steadied as she fell asleep in Kara’s arms.

  8 Days later

  Kara climbed into bed beside Rachel, a dim lamp illuminated the room just enough for the 2 to see each other, it had become their nightly routine to talk before going to sleep, Rachel was in the middle of saying something when Kara interrupted her,

  “Rachel” She said, Rachel looked into her eyes, confused,

  “Yes” She answered, the air between them grew thick, a moment passed, Kara moved closer and wrapped her arms around Rachel, Rachel slid her arms behind Kara's neck as their lips met, they stayed embraced for a moment, until Rachel pulled away suddenly, she turned away from Kara and muttered,

  “Goodnight” Kara lay confused for a bit before turning the light out, she laid back down with her thoughts racing, she laid like that for a while, eventually she rolled to face Rachel and pulled her into her arms and fell asleep.

  The first rays of sunlight were peeking into Barbara’s room through the open curtains, she was finishing her workout when there was a quiet knock at the door,

  “Yes” She answered, expecting it to be Dick,

  “Are you awake?” Kara asked,

  “Yeah, you can come in” Barbara invited, Kara cracked the door open and slid in, closing the door behind,

  “I need to talk to you” She said,

  “Ok, can I shower while we talk, or is this something you need my full attention for?” Barbara asked, pointing to the connected bathroom with her thumb,

  “Yeah, that’s fine” Kara nodded,

  “Thanks, so what’s up?” Barbara asked, stepping into the bathroom,

  “I need your help” Kara heard the shower turn on,

  “With?” Barbara encouraged as she tossed her workout clothes on the floor,

  “What happens if I like someone?” Kara asked, Barbara laughed a little from the shower,

  “The world explodes” She joked, before asking “What do you mean, What happens?”

  “What do I do?” Kara asked,

  “Usually talking to them about it is a good first step” Kara heard the shower turn off,

  “I don’t know how she’ll react, when we kissed her reaction was, confusing” Barbara’s face peeked out from around the door frame, with a wide, giddy smile,

  “You’ve already kissed? And it’s a she?” She asked, excitedly, Kara’s face turned red, she nodded slightly,

  “Is that ok?” She asked,

  “Yeah, of course it’s ok” Barbara disappeared back into the bathroom and began toweling off “Who is she?” She asked, playfully, Kara shuffled awkwardly.

  Barbara stepped back into the room, she dropped a damp towel into the clothes basket beside the bathroom door,

  “It’s fine, you don’t have to tell me, but if you 2 start seeing each other you better bring her around” She said with a smile, Kara nodded silently, “So, what was her reaction when you kissed?” Barbara asked, as she pulled a dresser drawer open,

  “She seemed upset afterward, I thought she liked it, but then she stopped and we didn’t talk after” Kara said, watching as Barbara pulled a pair of socks, panties, and a bra out of the drawer and set them in a line on the bed, each 1 almost the exact same shade of white and folded in a neat, compact way

  “Did she kiss you back?” She asked, Kara thought for a second, before nodding,

  “Yeah” She said, Barbara offered a comforting smile as she laid a folded white t-shirt in line on the bed, beside the bra,

  “Just talk to her, maybe she’s confused, maybe she’s not comfortable with her sexuality, or maybe she’s not interested, maybe it wasn’t what she expected, you won’t know until you 2 talk” She said, pulling a pair of combat pants off a rack in the closet,

  “Ok, I’ll talk to her, thanks” Kara said,

  “Anytime” Barbara said, she sat on the bed and was slipping her socks on when Kara left.

  Rachel ducked to avoid Kori’s jab, she stumbled left to dodge the follow up kick, Kori recovered quickly and surprised Rachel with a fast knee to her gut, Rachel threw her arms in front of her and managed to block at the last second, however she was still knocked back onto her butt,

  “Rachel” Kara called from the door to the sparring room, Kori’s head whipped back to look at her, she offered Rachel her hand as Kara approached,

  “What is it Kara?” Rachel asked,

  “Can we talk?” Kara asked,

  “About what?” Rachel asked, Kara glanced at Kori,

  “In private” She said,

  “Ok” Rachel said, with a nervous sigh.

  The 2 found an empty room and closed the door as they entered,

  “We need to talk about last night” Kara said, Rachel was avoiding her eyes,

  “No, we don’t, we can just pretend it never happened” She said, keeping her voice hushed,

  “I don’t want to” Kara said, a little too loud for Rachel’s liking,

  “Why?” Rachel asked, she already knew why, but she wanted Kara to say it first, because she wasn’t sure how too,

  “Because I like you, and I’ve never felt this way before, I’ve spent a lot of time alone, and now I have the Titans, and everyone's treated me like family, I would do anything to protect them, and I would do anything to protect you, but it’s different” Rachel finally met Kara’s eyes,

  “I’ve never done anything like this before, everything before I was imprisoned in a lab isn’t there, I don’t remember anything normal until a couple months ago, and I don’t know what this is” She said, Kara could see the shame on Rachel’s face as her eyes almost immediately dropped to the floor,

  “Neither have I, I don’t fully understand it either, but I know I like you” Kara said, she used a finger to direct Rachel's face back up to face hers, “I want to learn what this is, together, will you be my girlfriend?” Rachel’s breath had become heavy,

  “Can we not tell everyone else yet?” She asked, Kara nodded, a little confused, “Yes” Rachel answered, she stood on her toes and kissed Kara hard on the lips, Kara’s arms wrapped around her waist to steady her, as she kissed her back.
