The Forgotten Path

Sebastian began following the wolf entity. The bridge built using the remains seemed to be built at the same pace that the wolf moved. With each step, he noticed something new. On his right, he saw several skeletons of what used to be a thriving city. Now, only the concrete and steel that once helped the enormous structures stand remained.

So, even places come here once they are forgotten, interesting.

Then he noticed ancient ruins that appeared to have different temples and pyramids built in times long forgotten, the temples seemed to have been built out of a white stone, they looked to have been worked on with such care that even from a distance you could see the care the builders have had when working on the stones. Meanwhile, the pyramids were gigantic, gigantic enough to reach the sky, Sebastian was completely surprised by the sheer size, how could an ancient civilization build such a monument?

  Were they giants?

Then he noticed something else, the air, it was strange… The air carried in some way a heavy… Stillness? Yeah, that would be the best way to describe it. With the air came faint, half-heard whispers. Some of the whispers seemed to carry some semblance of coherence in what they were saying, but, most of them were simply ramblings. Sebastian figured that the forgotten were trying to tell him something, unfortunately, he couldn't understand all of them, he was incapable of understanding most of them.

Then, Sebastian finally understood why there was a need for the bridge. The ground, if it could even be called that, seemed to undulate with different surfaces: scorched stone, rusted metal, crystal shards, and some more that Sebastian couldn't identify.

Then he noticed the light, it seemed to come from everywhere and at the same time, to come from nowhere, the light had no source to be coming from. and, to top it off, all the light came in muted colors, dull greens, pale silvers, and ashen blacks. Shadows were unnaturally long, moving like they had a life of their own without needing to be cast by anything or anyone.

Occasionally, Sebastian would catch a shape flickering at the edge of his eye, almost out of his perception. Forgotten faces, abandoned creation, and, some things that made Sebastian feel like he was on the verge of realizing something, but it would abruptly stop, he wondered, what those were.

Sebastian continued following the wolf entity, but he started to catch glimpses of other stuff, he looked at the sky and saw the stars, but, the stars seemed to be moving, some stars started to appear and some started to disappear, Sebastian was mesmerized by the sight, but then, he notices something else, it was a living being A colossal existence was coiling around the sky, withing that existence all the stars in the void seemed to be forming and being destroyed constantly.

How many stars and planets must have been forgotten since the universe came into existence?

  Sebastian wondered.

Does that thing keep all the stars within itself? Just how big is it?

Sebastian figured it was best not to stare too much into that, if those who could be contained within those rooms back there had such a heavy presence, what kind of presence would that thing have if it paid attention to Sebastian? It was better to focus on keeping up with that wolf being.

The more they walk, the stranger that place gets, waterfalls, that, despite what they were called, seemed to be falling upwards instead of downwards. Giant fauna could tower above the highest buildings Sebastian had seen in his life, floating islands that had strange structures that he couldn't describe, and even a giant statue of a warrior made in some sort of metal that Sebastian couldn't explain how it was made.

As they continued walking, on the horizon, eventually a monolithic structure could be seen. Those structures were drifting in an endless ink-black sea. Rising from the shifting waters like jagged spires, the structures seemed to defy logic, their architecture alien and incomprehensible. Twisted geometries and impossible angles made the mind feel lost when looking for too long at those structures. The structures seemed to be made from materials that shouldn't be able to be combined, obsidian surfaces that looked to be smooth enough to slide on them. The iridescent lines of light looked like veins. Alongside the different glyphs that shine in impossible colors. Each building hums, with a sound that seems to vibrate in a synchronized manner with everything in that place, the sound that directly bypassed the flesh and directly touched your soul. The ink-black sea that surrounded the structures seemed almost alive, its surface rippling with movements of long-forgotten beings that dwell below the surface of the sea. Occasionally Sebastian could spot the bodies of such beings moving, some of them even stopping to take a look at the bridge being formed and the wolf that walked in front of the bridge. The wolf-like entity, with a simple look, sent all of those below the surface of the sea running away.

  Stolen story; please report.

What is it to send those things running…

When they entered those monolithic structures, what Sebastian saw were tomes, artifacts, and what he guessed were memories, Every corridor and chamber was inscribed with cryptic runes that pulsed with faint light. The more Sebastian looked at those strange runes, the more he felt his mind crumbling, he had to focus to convince his mind to stop looking. It wasn't long until they managed to reach the center of the structure.

Or it was long just that my time perception is all over the place right now.

And Sebastian was right to think such a thing, if he or anyone else wanted to explore those megalithic structures, it would very well take forever.

At the center, they encountered a person, or what Sebastian believed to be a person. it was a fleeting existence, almost like a mirage. That person seemed to exist and not exist at the same time, as if that person was going into existence and out of it per her will. The closer the wolf leads Sebastian, he starts to notice other details, for starters it seems to be a woman standing there, in front of her, a giant sphere that changes colors with each passing second.

The woman in question looked to be beautiful, her skin shimmered like the reflection of the first rays of sun on the water, and her body seemed to be flickering between being tangible and being completely intangible. She had long hair that flowed freely, from time to time it took strange shapes, but afterward it would simply vanish.

She was dressed in attire made of swirling shadow and faint luminescence, a veil of incomprehensible runes and patterns that shift endlessly, unreadable even to the Gods.

The dress, an ethereal ensemble woven from swirling shadows and faint luminescence, exuded an otherworldly aura. A long veil was tied to her wrist and flowed freely behind her, her whole attire was covered with an intricate tapestry of incomprehensible runes and patterns, that morphed constantly.

"Welcome Sebastian" The woman spoke. Her voice was inexplicable, it sounded young and old, it sounded like the voice of someone who had gone through millions of experiences and at the same time, like that of a child who was just learning their first words.

"Thank you for having me?" Sebastian answered in a rather shy voice.

"Well, technically you belong here," The woman said. "You are supposed to be here, but yet, you aren't, you see, that creates a problem"

Sebastian looked down, that day had been a day of him creating problems for others.

  "I'm sorry," He said.

"Don't" The woman answered. "It's not your fault I'm still trying to figure out what happened"

"If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean?" Sebastian replied.

The woman finally turned to look at him instead of looking at the sphere. Her eyes were pitch black, no, it was better to say that her eyes were a complete void, that didn't reflect anything, nor light, nor the person looking into those eyes. Yet, those eyes seemed to be whispering different things, things that Sebastian was not supposed to hear.

"Well, I don't really mind, but I would need to explain a couple of things to you," The woman said.

  "I understand," Sebastian said.

"You are a curious one," The woman said. "Ok, as you already know this is the Void, you can call me The Archivist, I archive the things that have been forgotten whether they were forgotten naturally or happened because someone or something forbade that piece of knowledge to be remembered by the world. I am in charge of all of that knowledge, now, as you may have noticed that the status of forgotten applies to much more than just objects."

Sebastian nodded, not daring to interrupt.

"Among those beings, some have escaped from this place, that is a huge problem, that is not supposed to happen, in here I'm all-knowing and all-powerful, the fact that they managed to escape, means that someone interfered. And there aren't many that can interfere with the Void without me taking notice. At first, I thought you were one of them, your souls should be here, but, after testing you, I realize you are not, you are only half-forgotten, that's a weird state to be in. Nevertheless, I brought you here because I would like to propose something"

"To me?" Sebastian asked incredulously. "I'm a child"

"Technically yes, you are just a child, but also, technically you are not, you are an old soul, very old in fact. The deal is this, if you agree to help me look for the forgotten that escaped I will help you remember the things from your past, I know you are curious, I saw you asking your past self"

"But I can't even attune to a conduit, how am I supposed to help look for those things? I experienced just the presence of several and it was terrifying and difficult to just stand, I ended up crawling, I have no hope of being useful" Sebastian said, the frustration he felt for not being able to attune with a conduit had never left him, and now, those feelings were coming back, he wouldn't be able to satisfy his curiosity due to his failures.

"That was not your fault," The woman said, interrupting Sebastian's thoughts.

"I know, it's just a manner of luck for a conduit to choose you," Sebastian said, looking at the ground, unable to meet the woman's eyes.

"No, there was no way a conduit would choose you" The woman interrupted.

Sebastian looked up with a puzzled expression.

  "Why not?" He asked.

"You were sealed child, and what a seal it is. It cuts you off from Amrita, meaning that you don't have any way to sustain your soul in the long term" The woman answered while returning to look at her sphere. "Eventually your soul wouldn't have been able to continue sustaining your body, thus you would have died"

"What?" Sebastian asked. "Why does being cut off from Amrita cause that many problems?"

"Your physical body needs food and water to be sustained, your soul needs Amrita, without a soul a body cannot continue existing, that's common knowledge," The woman said, her tone never changing no matter what Sebastian said. "And I can erase that seal with ease, I can even provide a conduit for you, if you accept the offer that is"

  "Why me?" Sebastian asked.

"Three reasons: first I'm busy trying to find who helped the forgotten escaped. Second, your soul is oddly compatible with the one I'm thinking of assigning the task of hunting the other forgotten down. Third, you have a chimeric soul, a natural one, that's quite weird" The woman said.

"What is a chimeric soul?" Sebastian asked confused.

"How many conduits have you been thought you can have?" The woman asked.

  "One?" Sebastian answered.

"Correct, unless you have a chimeric soul, it's a strange phenomenon in which a human can have two conduits at the same time, you have that"

Sebastian had never heard of a chimeric soul, and there was a good reason for that, only the top officials of the government, churches, and other organizations like that could get to. The individuals that have been found to have chimeric souls were seized by them, and having two conduits represented a problem, they either were incredibly strong or would fall to corruption too fast, so, leaving them alone was not an option.

"So, child of the chimeric soul, what do you say?"
