“This is quite unusual of you, sister. I never took you for someone who enjoyed…these kinds of treats.”
Angus stared at the box with a suspicious gaze. Closed with an elegant ribbon, the box did little to conceal the rich scent of chocolate.
“I told you—it was given to me. Yet you fancy sweets far more than I do, brother. So I thought you could enjoy.”
He turned the box in his hands, ensuring nothing was out of the ordinary. Yet when he read the ingredients written on the bottom label, a smile formed on his lips.
“‘Made with Fairies’ love’…are you sure this is not some poorly executed prank?”
His twin chuckled, her eyes still fixated on her newest acquisition: another puzzle connected with glowing colors and alchemical reactions, yet this one was the most complex he had seen on his sister’s hands by far.
“Either accept it or throw it away, brother. I couldn’t care less. So, did you find what I asked for?”
After Angus dealt with his sister, he found himself in the middle of his living room, staring at the closed chocolate box.
To throw the thing away would be simply a waste—something only those with incredibly poor manners would do. He could never throw away something that was bought with so much care and affection, no matter what his sister said.
Yes… To throw this away would be truly inelegant.
In the end, Angus opened the box. A beautiful card had been placed on top, with a single sentence written in beautiful handwriting.
‘May the sweetest of dreams reach you’
Angus raised his eyebrow, amused. Well, he did love sweets.
He poured himself a nice wine and took a few chocolates from the box. As he placed them into his mouth the thing melted in his tongue, spreading its rich and intense flavor. Angus was taken aback for a moment, not expecting to like the chocolate that much.
Before he knew it, the box was empty and his eyelids were heavy. Too heavy.
Yet that scent, it still filled the air. Something so sweet and so…
Warm.
The sun was setting, and though it was getting colder the past month, the breeze carried its own warmth. The tall man was waiting beside a carriage, his white attire immaculate as always. He adjusted the gold cuffs on his wrists, smiling as he saw that person approaching.
“How were today’s classes?” His voice was warmer than the breeze that ruffled that person’s hair, his eyes focusing on the other’s gaze without a hint of hesitation.
“They were normal. Why would they be any different?” Vex replied as he adjusted his bag on his shoulder, his eyes showing a bit of tiredness.
Angus stepped aside and opened the carriage door for him, his eyes never wandering too far. “In that case, I reckon you wouldn’t mind accompanying me for a meal? I can take you home later.”
Vex opened his mouth, as if he was going to complain or refuse, but then averted his eyes while gripping the bag a bit tighter. There was a small hint of shyness in both his voice and eyes.
“…sure. Thanks.”
To his amusement, the place was not at all crowded. They were even able to sit in a more reserved space on the store’s second floor, a beautiful view of the city stretching to their right.
As they waited for their order, Vex continued to gaze at the city and its glowing lights, the tall buildings blending with the small houses and venues. The breeze blew past them once again, yet this time it carried a scent that was at the same time familiar and new to him.
One that was as sweet as it was dangerous.
“I honestly can’t understand why you bother to bring me to such places,” Vex mumbled, his eyes still lost in the view.
Angus took a few sips of his drink, loosening his tie a bit.
“Why wouldn’t I? I fancy your company, and I am quite free today. Wouldn’t you say this is a great way to spend my time?”
Vex finally met his gaze, and those purple eyes were more beautiful than any jewel Angus had ever encountered.
“I’m pretty sure I could find a lot more ways to spend my time that would be both cheaper and more productive.” And there it was, the mocking smile and the slightly annoyed tone Angus always found so endearing and amusing to see.
“Oh, I don’t doubt you could. Regardless, spending my time with a dear friend is something I cannot put a price on, and something I find to be of the utmost importance as well.”
Vex’s smile faded then, a cold and dark shadow stealing the rebellious glow from his gaze.
“Why do you wish so much to be friends? What could you even gain with my friendship? I have nothing to offer you.”
Once again the warm breeze carried that scent, one Angus took in with a deep breath. And then came a realization.
Of course…that scent...
He knew who it belonged to.
Angus’ hand found Vex’s, seeking his warmth and touch almost with a will of its own. Vex widened his eyes, a flush appearing on his cheeks.
“Then what if we were not friends? What if you could give me something else? Could I ask you to spend more of your time with me, then?”
As Angus brought Vex's hands to his lips, Vex’s face got even redder.
“W-what are you even saying right now—are you drunk?”
Angus’ body got warmer, the breeze stronger, as more and more that sweet scent filled the space between them. Indeed, it was quite dangerous. That scent.
“Perhaps I am. Or perhaps this is the sanest I’ve ever been.”
As Vex never pulled him away, Angus got closer. Until the space that separated them was almost nonexistent. Until he could almost hear Vex’s racing heart, a rapid and euphoric beating that matched his own.
Vex’s lips parted—
And Angus opened his eyes.
The man blinked. Then he blinked again, the ceiling unchanged as it stared right back at him.
He sat up, dazed.
His eyes blinked again.
His hand touched his chest, the echo of his racing heart still fresh and clear in his mind. His golden eyes moved toward the card on top of the table, the words looking more vivid and bright.
‘May the sweetest of dreams reach you’
Angus smiled as he laid back on the couch, the words and dream he just had running through his head again and again.
People did say fairies were used for love charms and potions, though there was hardly any proof.
The man chuckled, closing his eyes as the sweet scent of dark chocolate slowly faded.
“This…is certainly amusing.”
Yet that warmth…
It stayed with him for a while more.
