Chapter 26

Her breath caught in her throat for just a moment and returned in gasps.

“What’s the matter?” Thomas asked, coming to her side

She took off running down the hall, nearly falling. She ran into the library and opened the window, crawling through it as quickly as possible. Sunlight spilled over her eyes as they adjusted, but she didn’t stop. She ran to the man who she had seen, who was now running past her towards the house.

  “James!” Christine yelled through laughs

The man stopped and looked back. The biggest smile appeared on his bruised and battered face. He turned and ran to her. Christine stopped running and jumped up and down like a child in the grass. James came to her and swooped her into his arms. She had a million questions to ask but he answered them all when he put her down.

“I was sent to battle the Americans, they prevailed and only a few of us survived. I ran to the base to see that the rest of the soldiers had left maps behind. I used one to bandage my arm and the other to make my way here. I’ve come 50 miles and 10,000 blocks to ask you….can you ever forgive me for leaving you, my first and only love?”

Christine scoffed like his question was ridiculous, “I already have”

She showered him with kisses and helped him walk back to the house.

Thomas dropped the bouquet of flowers Louise had handed him when she came in as James and Christine walked down the hall to them. Louise’s eyes went wide.

“You look as though you’ve seen a ghost, miss Louise,” James smiled

“Can I offer you a glass of water Mr Waltz?” was her stuttered reply

  The End.
