Chapter 16: Love is Blind

Entering the ward, Ray saw a pale little girl of about six, with long bck hair and eyes of different colors. The heterochromia looked very natural on her pretty face. Upon their arrival, the girl smiled joyfully and, despite her pallor, jumped off the bed and energetically rushed into Ray's arms, asking:

"Big brother, what are we going to read today?"

Seeing her sister's reaction, Lily was very happy. She also often read books to her, but she had to admit that Ray was better at it. If you can read a book in such a way that it becomes interesting even to a child who previously didn't enjoy it, then you're truly good at it.

Ray had been reading books since an early age, and with his narration, the characters living on the pages of books seemed genuinely alive.

Not only Violet, but Lily herself was completely absorbed by the events of the book. When the book ended, Ray and Lily continued to entertain the little one. Usually their grandmother stayed with her, but sometimes Violet would send her home so she could spend time with Lily. They told a few stories from work. When it was time to leave, the girl didn't cry, but it was obvious she was sad.

Noticing this, Ray gently stroked the little one's head and promised:

"We'll come next weekend, and I'll bring a new book."

When they left the hospital, Ray noticed that Lily's mood had significantly worsened. Stopping and pulling the girl close to him, he asked:

  "What's wrong?"

"I really hope a donor is found. But the thought that someone will have to die so my sister can live terrifies me."

"People die every day. If I die tomorrow, I wouldn't mind giving someone a chance to live on. All that would worry me is that the person turns out to be worthy. But I'm sure that with an example like you, Violet will become a wonderful person."

"As agreed, I'll come early. I've already won over your sister, now I just need to win over your grandmother. I'm sure that won't be a problem for me, because the way to any woman's heart is through her stomach. Personally tested."

Hearing her beloved's words, Lily said jokingly:

"It seems I've fallen for an arrogant narcissist."

"What can I say? Love really is blind," Ray replied with a ugh.
