Chapter 8: The Calm Before the Storm**

The silence that followed the battle against Kubo was filled with the murmurs of gratitude from the freed people. Children held the hands of the group members, tears streaming down their faces, while the elderly bowed in thanks. Even with aching bodies and exhausted minds, Yuzuki, Gotier, and Akari could not ignore the weight of the responsibility they had just taken on.

With the resources gathered from Kubo's castle, the group managed to gather enough to ensure that the rescued people would have a new chance at life. Zeke, silent until then, led the efforts to find safe places, showing an unexpected sense of care. He pointed out distant villages, away from the threats of the Lead Clan or the conflicts in Pangea.

During the exploration of the castle, Akari found a room full of documents. Among them, the group discovered references to the Church of Faith. The name Simon Riley, described as a ruthless hunter of people from the Island of Kugutsu, caught Gotier's attention. Simon was the son of Sandoval, an influential bishop and a central figure in the movement against the Kugutsus. Gotier's face hardened as he read the name, but he said nothing.

However, it was a painting in the corner of the room that drew everyone's attention. It depicted an imposing tower, surrounded by a dark and mysterious aura. At the top, the symbol of a silver dragon shone brightly. Gotier stood before the image, his eyes reflecting conflicting emotions. He touched the dragon with his fingertips but remained silent.

Paige, however, broke the silence with a soft song:

  — *"In the Tower of Moonlight, beneath the dancing dragon, secrets sleep in its light, awaiting the moon's return."*

  Everyone looked at her, surprised.

  — Do you know this song? — Akari asked.

Paige shook her head, a melancholic smile on her lips.

  — It is an old song. They say this painting became famous because of it, but no one really knows what it means. Perhaps it is just a legend.

Later, while they rested, Akari decided to confront Zeke.

  — Why are you helping these people so much? It does not seem like something someone called the "King's Dog" would do.

Zeke sighed, the weight of his history evident in his eyes.

  — After I lost to Yuzuki on the Island of Kugutsu, I was given a new mission by the King. They sent me to destroy a village that was opposing the king. But when I got there, I saw families... children... — He hesitated, his voice faltering for a moment. — I could not do it. I dropped my sword and refused. Shion noticed my hesitation. He captured me and sold me as a slave.

Akari was surprised to learn that Zeke had been abandoned simply for questioning the king's orders.

  — And now? Why help these people? Do you have something to gain from it?

  Zeke shook his head.

  — I just want to survive. I am not the same as before. Maybe I am trying to make up for what I did, or almost did. Who knows?

A silence fell between them, but for the first time, Akari saw something different in Zeke: sincerity.

When the time came to leave, Paige hugged each member of the group tightly. She started with Gotier, who, despite his usual seriousness, allowed a small smile.

  — You are stronger than you think, Paige. Take good care of your mother.

With Akari, the hug was long and filled with tears.

  — You were like a sister to me — said Paige.

  — And you to me — replied Akari, holding her hands.

Finally, she turned to Yuzuki. He tried to smile, but still carried the marks of the battle.

  — I never would have made it without you — he admitted. — Thank you for reminding me of who I am.

  — I will never forget you all. You are my family, even from afar — said Paige, with a smile amidst the tears.

As she walked away, the group, now smaller, watched her disappear over the horizon, knowing that the bonds formed would never be broken.

  ### **Revelations and Growing Tensions**

The next morning, the atmosphere in the temporary shelter was thick with emotion. Akari, silently, left early for the city. With quick steps, she crossed the rain-soaked streets, the cobblestones reflecting the gray tones of a still-threatening sky. Her mission: to find something that could symbolize the beginning of a new journey for Zeke.

Meanwhile, Zeke explored the bustling streets of the city. The place was a mix of opulence and decay. However, something else caught Zeke's attention. He stopped as he felt a familiar and oppressive energy. His breathing became heavy. A presence, hidden in the bar at the end of a dark street, seemed to blend with the smell of rain and dust. He narrowed his eyes at the place, where the sign creaked in the wind and the lights flickered with the power of a lightning bolt.

  — Alkaraz... — he murmured, his expression hardening. He did not need to see him; the scent and energy were unmistakable.

Later, Akari returned to the shelter carrying a finely crafted wooden box. She found Zeke leaning against a wall, his eyes distant.

  — Zeke — she called, breaking the silence.

She handed him the box with a small, somewhat shy smile.

  — I thought you would need this. Something to help you start over.

Zeke opened the gift carefully. Inside was a sword with a hilt embedded with small rubies. Its blade, light and balanced, reflected the light with a silvery glow.

  — Why? — he asked, his voice low.

Akari shrugged, but her eyes sparkled.

  — Because you deserve a chance to fight for something you believe in. Not just to survive.

He did not answer immediately. His mind was filled with confusion, gratitude, and something more. He looked at her, feeling strangely connected.

  — I... owe you — he said, his voice trembling slightly.

  Akari shook her head.

  — It is not a debt. It is a gift.

  ### **Yuzuki's Revelation**

Meanwhile, Yuzuki was training in the castle courtyard. His hands were wounded, and sweat dripped down his face. Gotier watched closely, offering occasional guidance.

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

  — You are pushing too hard — Gotier remarked.

  — I know — Yuzuki replied, his eyes shining with determination. — But there is no time to be cautious.

Later, when everyone gathered in the hall, Zeke reported what he had felt in the city.

  — I saw Alkaraz — he announced, his voice laden with tension.

The silence fell like a stone. Yuzuki paled but quickly regained his composure.

  — So it is true — he murmured, looking at Zeke. — If Alkaraz is here, it means Yuri is too. He does not go anywhere without his right-hand man.

Akari visibly tensed, and Yuzuki noticed.

  — Yuri... is the bearer of a Kugutsu that controls blood — he continued, his voice dark. — And Alkaraz is feared not only for his position as clan leader. He enjoys enslaving and humiliating those he has defeated. If he is after us, it is not just for interest. It is for pleasure.

  Gotier furrowed his brow.

  — You seem to know a lot about them.

  Yuzuki nodded slowly.

  — I studied the clan leaders, their families, and their right-hand men. Everything I have done so far has had a logical purpose. But... it is not time to talk about it. Not yet.

He turned to Akari, his eyes fixed on her.

  — And what about you? Is Alkaraz after us because of you?

  Akari hesitated before answering.

  — My father... was the former leader of the clan. Maybe he wants to use that against me, or against all of us.

Akari's answer did not seem to fully satisfy Yuzuki. He knew she was still hiding something. But before he could press her, Mao echoed in his mind.

  — **They will find out, Yuzuki. All of your past... and our pact. You have not told them the full agreement, have you? What a fool.**

Yuzuki clenched his fists, ignoring the voice.

  — We need to capture Alkaraz — he said, changing the subject. — And hand him over to the mercenary group. They have an extensive network of information, and there is someone there called 'The Hunter'.

  — The Hunter? — Gotier raised an eyebrow.

  — Yes — Yuzuki replied. — To destroy the enemy, we need to know them. And this is our chance.

As the group discussed the plan, Yuzuki looked out the window at the dark sky. He knew the battle against Alkaraz would be dangerous, but he also knew another battle was approaching—the truth about his pact with Mao.

  — It is time to act — he murmured to himself.

Mao, ever-present, just smiled in his mind.

  — **You can try, Yuzuki. But remember... in the end, it is always I who win.**

  Damage to the Soul**

The night in the castle was silent, with only the distant sound of rain beating against the windows. The calm hid the tension that Yuzuki carried in his heart. Sitting in a corner of the main hall, he sharpened his sword with precise movements, his expression serious and his gaze distant. The flickering candlelight danced on the metal of the blade, almost as if whispering secrets of forgotten times.

Behind him, Akari, Zeke, and Gotier were talking. They laughed softly, exchanging stories and trying to ease the weight of the cruel reality surrounding them. Their friendship grew, but Yuzuki, oblivious to that moment, seemed distant, isolated in his own thoughts.

He looked at the sword with an almost suffocating intensity.

  — How many lives have you taken? — he murmured to himself, feeling the weight of his past choices. For a moment, the blade's gleam reflected faces he could never forget: his family, his clan, and those who had crossed his path only to be erased by his relentless goal.

His thoughts led him to flashbacks of confusing memories, like an incomplete puzzle.

  ### **Memories and Shadows**

Yuzuki saw hazy images: the banner of the Alcali Clan fluttering in the wind, a silver dragon carved in stone, soldiers marching over the bodies of innocents. The cruel laughter of a king beside a hooded demon made him shudder. He saw an ancient book, its pages soaked in darkness. The pact. And then Mao's face appeared, smiling maliciously.

  — **Who are you really, Yuzuki?** — Mao's voice echoed in his mind. — **These dreams are your fault, your choices. Do not fool yourself, boy. You know you are here for something much greater.**

Yuzuki clenched his fists, trying to drive away the voice, but it was persistent. He knew Mao spoke both truths and lies, and it was hard to tell them apart. There was something in those dreams that seemed important, but fear and guilt clouded his understanding.

  — You know nothing, Mao.

  — **I do not? Perhaps. But, Yuzuki, the truth always comes out. And when it does, I hope you are ready.**

Yuzuki's mind wandered as he sharpened the sword. He thought of the Island of Kugutsu and the three main clans that ruled that feared place: the Lead Clan, the Salt Clan, and the Alcali Clan. Each played an essential role in maintaining the world's balance. The Kugutsus were the ultimate hunters of Kanjis, acting to exterminate those who dared to challenge the natural order.

The very existence of the Kugutsu was a paradox. Created through an ancient ritual, it split its bearer's soul into two beings, giving rise to a demon that shared the same body. Each Kugutsu had unique abilities and demanded a deep bond with its host. But the price was high: Kanjis bearing Kugutsus rarely lived past fifty, and many succumbed to madness before then.

*"They call it balance, but all they do is spread destruction,"* Yuzuki thought, recalling the horrors of the Island of Kugutsu.

The inhabitants of Pangea, on the other hand, tried to replicate the ritual, but without the pure knowledge of the island, they resorted to human sacrifices, creating unstable and dangerous demons. These were the Kanjis hunted by the main clans.

The Church of the Holy Faith, in turn, was one of the continent's greatest powers. Located in Fe, the religious capital, it was known for using Kanjis as priests and clerics, controlling its followers through sacrificial rituals to obtain Kugutsus. This institution was both feared and revered—a blend of faith and oppression that shaped Pangea.

  — All of them — Yuzuki murmured to himself —, Kugutsus, Kanjis, the Island... they are no better than those they claim to fight.

  ### **Choices and Sacrifices**

The rain lashed the castle, making the air even heavier. The cold, damp stone walls echoed the voices of the group gathered in the main hall. Gotier, Zeke, and Akari chatted while Yuzuki, seated near the hearth, gently ran his hand along his sword. His eyes remained fixed on the blade, but his mind was elsewhere.

  — Yuzuki, are you all right? — Gotier asked as he approached.

Yuzuki lifted his gaze, his expression blank but still weighed down by something Gotier could not decipher. He took a deep breath before replying.

  — Father... could you say a prayer for us?

The request surprised everyone. Gotier, though taken aback, smiled, feeling genuine joy.

  — Of course! A prayer is always welcome, my friend.

Akari and Zeke exchanged curious glances but joined the priest, who began to utter sacred words.

  — Oh, Holy Faith, guide our steps on this shadowed journey. Protect us from the dangers that surround us and strengthen our hearts against the temptation of despair...

As the words resonated through the hall, Yuzuki closed his eyes. His hand gripped the sword firmly, but his thoughts drifted.

*"They trust me. They believe we are in this together. But the truth... they could never bear this burden."*

The prayer continued, and the group was immersed in concentration. Akari pressed her hands together in respect while Zeke, eyes closed, murmured low words. Gotier, with a calm and solemn voice, concluded the prayer.

  — May the light guide us. Amen.

When Gotier bowed his head, feeling a rare moment of peace, everything changed.

  ### **The Blow**

Yuzuki rose silently, moving with the precision of a predator. Before anyone could react, he struck Zeke on the head with the hilt of his sword. The young man collapsed to the ground, unconscious.

Akari spun around, her eyes wide.

  — Yuzuki?! What are you doin—

Another swift, decisive blow brought her down. Gotier tried to react, but it was already too late. Feeling the impact on his temple, he staggered, but before losing consciousness, he looked at Yuzuki, confused.

  — Why? — Gotier whispered, barely able to speak.

Yuzuki remained silent. His eyes, now devoid of light, conveyed a profound emptiness, as if all hope had vanished.

*"They would not understand. They cannot know. This is to protect them."*

  ***

  ### **Farewell**

Yuzuki gazed at his fallen friends. The rain outside seemed to mirror the chaos in his mind.

  — You are safe here. It is for the best.

He turned and walked toward the castle gates. As he stepped through, the storm engulfed him completely. Lightning illuminated the sky, and thunder rolled like war drums. Each step was heavy, but he knew he could not hesitate.

*"They think Alkaraz came for Akari, but the truth... he is here because of me."*
