My father actually carried our equipment and myself back to our home! When my father got home, my mother was quite shocked to see that I collapsed. She instantly dropped what she was doing, rushing over towards us to help get me inside to help me recover. Placing me in my bed, she spent the next day tending to my injuries, using linen cloth dipped in hot war and placing it on my head; she would also use her healing magic which I have minimum knowledge about but, apparently I got better after resting and being nursed. This was all according to my father anyway but, I’m really grateful to have parents that care for me albeit, my father was being a tad bit strict with my training, which kind of scared me but all ends well and I got a lot out of it anyway!
I awaken from my slumber as I clasp my head tightly, reminiscing on what happened and how I got here, then I remembered what I last saw which was my father carrying me back home, then I happened to faint. I shook my head in disappointment thinking to myself: “ How could I have fainted on the first day of training? I’m disappointed but, I’ll have to make up for it next time… “ I was disturbed by a faint knocking on the door.
*Knock* *Knock*
“ Are you up, champ ? “ it sounded like my father, you can never miss that deep yet, caring voice. Nodding my head whilst I replied " Yes, dad. I want to continue our training as soon as possible. “
Entering the room, my father looked around as he slowly strolled towards the chair that was next to my bed, sitting down for a moment and narrowing his eyes, glaring at me; I didn’t know why he was looking so deeply at me, I wonder what he is thinking. “ Alright, come have some breakfast first; then I’ll think about resuming our training. We need to make sure you finish learning how to counter properly and integrate all that knowledge and training you’ve done in actual combat. “ his tone retaining its seriousness that I heard whilst training as if he decided on something; I guess that would be whether my condition was actually fit enough to do training.
“Thanks a lot, dad. I think I can feel that I’m improving. “ I chuckle lightly to break this tense atmosphere, and he smiles at me faintly. I get out of bed, feeling a few phantom-pains all over my body from where my muscles must have expanded; they were feeling a bit rigid yet, it was a nice kind of pain – No, I am not a masochist. I follow him downstairs to where my mother was making breakfast and setting up the table; turning her head around she sees me coming downstairs as her face lightens up and smiles as she asked: “ Are you alright, Daren? I know you want to become strong but, you are still young and have a lot of time. Don’t rush yourself too much, it’s not good. “ her tone still possessing the care and love she has always had for me, I smiled as I replied “ Don’t worry about it, mum. Thanks to you and dad, I’ve gotten to full recovery. It wasn’t like I was in a proper fight; it was just exhaustion and straining my muscles a tad bit. “ my tone was apologetic and somewhat sympathetic just to let her know that I understand her worry; she nods at me and continues serving the food.
After me and my family finishing eating, we talk and converse about the strict training regimen that my father made me go through the previous day. My mother scolds him lightly whilst he laughs. It was nice and it brought a smile to my face; something that I can and will treasure for as long as I can. I shouldn’t take this for granted and maybe… Just maybe, I should be grateful for not being born as a noble because, I would probably not have such a loving family.
After our conversation, I and my father went into our respective rooms to switch into our training gear and grab our wooden swords. We then started making our way to the Guard courtyard to begin our training; hopefully, I don’t have to do that tedious task of repeating slashes and lunges. When we got there, he said to me: “ Listen Daren, you’ve done the basic training which was to know how to wield a sword; I’m going to now teach you swordsmanship through combat. “ his tone monotone, masculine and serious. I nod my head, unsheathing my sword and pointing it towards him. Of course, I had to get ready to fight him because, who knows when he would be coming at me…
Surprisingly, he shook his head side to side as he grinned at me before saying: “ Actually, I didn’t go home straight away after you were unconscious… I went over to one of the guards who is one of my close friends and asked if his son could spar with you. He is about eight? His been training for two years or so; he should be stronger than you but don’t get discouraged.” I sheathe my sword and smack my head as I thought to myself: “ How would it even be possible for me to fight someone as tall as my father ? It’s ridiculous.” Chuckling, I nodded and turned around in the direction of the houses which were fairly down from the guard training courtyard; conveniently I see a guard in casual wear and a child in training equipment that was similar to my own. As they came close enough, I was able to see how they looked now: the father had a full head of lion-brown hair, an oval shape face with narrow-eyes which were dark brown that could easily be considered black, he stood tall at 6’1 – near the same height as my father; the child was spitting image of his father; the same face and hair yet, a bit longer coming down to his shoulders like my own, he stood taller than me at 4’2.
“ Hello there, James. “ my father grinned with his hands crossed against his torso, glaring at the guard. ‘ James ‘ responded with a nod and replied: “ Good morning, Arthur. I see you brought your child; isn’t he a bit young? “ his voice was quite light and calm, glaring at my nearing the end of his sentence. My father shook his head and said “ Can you imagine he was the one who came up to me requesting to train him? I know he is a little bit young but, I’m sure after what we did yesterday and if he truly has my blood he should be able to learn from this. His goal is not to win. “ he had a hint of pride in his tone with a condescending grin on his face, looking at me when he mentioned ‘goal is not to win.’
Nodding my head at my father; James began to chuckle lightly as he began to look at his child and said “ Introduce yourself then boy, don’t stand there like a plank. “ the boy seemingly panicked, as he bowed to my father and nodded his head at me “ My name is Ben and it’s nice to make your acquaintance “ he had a very childish and energetic demeanour and his tone correlated with just that. My father looked down at me, nodding his head at me hinting I should do the same.
I smile lightly, stand up tall and push my chest out “ I’m Daren Lancaster, it’s nice to make your acquaintance as well. “ my tone full of pride and my eyes raging with passion; I would not be looked down at due to my age or inexperience and the best way to show my bravery and intelligence is to be proud of who I am and stand up tall. Both fathers nodded at the same time before, walking away and discussing something for a while.
“Hey Daren, how old are you now? You look a bit younger than me so, I wanted to know. “ he approached me and asked me a question; I wasn’t really use to conversations nor do I want to get use to them; I’ve always been anti-social and I’ve only been able to talk to my parents so far. So, I responded: “ Five years old. “ blunt and straightforward, I didn’t really want to encourage him to continue the conversation. “ I’m 8 Years Old. I’ve been training swordsmanship for two years now; you’re training a year earlier before, when I started. “ he chuckled at the end of the sentence; this is getting quite annoying and one-sided. I tilt my head bemused at his continue endeavours to continue this petty conversation; I quirked an inquisitive brow contemplating on his ulterior motive.
Shaking it off and exhaling deeply, I thought to myself: “ He is just a kid, why am I thinking that he is trying to do something. “ I glared at him narrowing my eyes as I said “ I wanted to become strong like my father; to protect my parents. That’s why I decided to train a little earlier than others. “ he didn’t seem like a bad kid nor did he have any ulterior motives that I could tell of, but responding like that made me cringe – It seems like I’m too use to being left to my lonesome.
Our fathers came back after the petty conversation; my father stepped forward and said: “ Alright boys, you are going to spar each other for as long as possible. Your aim is to learn from each other and test out your training; there is no point of learning things unless you’re actually going to put it to actual use. “ both I and Ben nodded our heads as we distanced ourselves from each other.
I put my legs together, straightened my back and unsheathed my wooden sword, clasping it in my hands as tight as I could. Since, I’ve got use to the tugging feeling when my mana is being drawn from my centre and the ‘burning’ sensation in my optic nerves when I activate 【Eyes of God】so, I planned something simple. I’ll activate【Eyes of God】for four seconds when, I want to see his movement and I’m trying to counter; that should help me in the long-run and hopefully, I’ll be able to utilise the techniques I learnt efficiently to defeat him but, the only disadvantage was that I could only use the technique five times. His stance was something to look at, as it was quite unique and smart. I’ve never done martial arts in my previous life, so I wasn’t really able to tell the pros and cons or the openings in his stance; his right-leg was pushed backwards, his left-leg bent as he tilted his body holding his sword near his waist as if about to lunge towards me.
“3…”
“2…”
“1…”
“Begin!”
Ben’s father, James counted down to the beginning of the match and as soon as it begun Ben dashes towards me with high-speed; as he spun flawless gathering an tremendous amount of momentum; in that time I only had enough time to activate my 【Eyes of God】I was able to see his maneuver gathering an extraordinary amount of momentum to swing his blade at my blindspot which was behind me utilizing turning which would have avoided any potential slashing in the forward direction. This would have worked against ordinary combatant but, luckily for me, I wasn’t an ordinary combatant as I predicted the direction of the attack, I knew I didn’t have enough strength to counter the attack properly; I jumped up whilst turning my body to face the attack, placing my sword in front of my torso. Ben smacked the wooden sword with a strong force, the recoil to my block was quite a bit of pain in my wrists and being pushed backwards on to the ground.
I quickly scan through the notification and my lips curled upwards, thinking to myself: “ Luckily for me, I’m use to thinking with my head but, I don’t need wisdom right now but, strength. “ I already deactivated my【Eyes of God】to make sure I don’t go over the limit I set myself – also, I would like to hide my ability as much as I could. I knew that, I stood no chance for Ben but, that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to give up; I pledged to myself that I’ll put in all my effort into everything I do and I’m not going to take that back.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
Standing up and re-organizing myself back into my stance, I am focusing on gaining some experience in countering and blocking attacks; since I knew I couldn’t really beat him. He was shocked and the distance that I flew wasn’t much; using this opportunity to strike during confusion, I tilt my body and placing my sword to the height of my abdomen, I dashed towards Ben and crouched as I aimed to strike upwards to his chin. Activating my【Eyes of God】I glanced at his arm that was holding his sword whilst, I was in transition of standing up with a fair amount of momentum to strike his chin – aiming to further disorientate him and knock him off balance so, I could send flurries of attacks his way.
His muscles! They twitched and were about to react to my attack; if I roughly estimate the time it’ll take for me to attack and him to strike me, is 1 second to 1.5 seconds. The damage I’ll inflict and receive is too big and not worth it; I decided that I’ll try my best to avoid impact. I force my body to stop moving, falling down to the ground and pushing myself off propelling myself backwards to gather some distance between me and him; yet, I was too slow he was able to hit my ankle when I dropped to the floor assuming that he was going to strike me in a crescent motion.
