Birds are singing, flowers are blooming in an unfamiliar place. Rain rushes down from the sky as it hits a building. An old, abandoned shop, completely made out of wood.
There is a thick layer of grass covering the roof, letting in just enough sunlight to light up the building various parts.
Diff wakes up to the calming sound of the rain. He is not in the mall, but somewhere else. He is in this small wooden building.
The warm wind easily rushes in and out of the building. Some of the windows are broken, but mostly in one piece.
Mainly moss have already took over some parts of the walls. Random flowers, what took the opportunity to grow in such abandoned place bloom happily.
As Diff looks around he spots Johnny laying on the moss covered wooden floor. A band aid wrapped strongly around his shoulder.
The wooden floor lets out a quiet creak as someone steps into the room from the back of the building. A short figure with a boyish frame moves forward, purple hair reaching the middle of their back.
The person wears a black shirt streaked with lightning patterns, a dark blue unzipped jacket with a boiling coffee mug sticker, and matching black pants and shoes.
The person stops, glanced at Diff, then sits down on the floor across from him, resting their back against the wall.
"Ah, you're finally awake," she said, her voice calm but carrying a weight of authority.
Diff blinked, still tired. The sound of rain hitting the windows filled the silence between them.
"I found you two unconscious in the mall," she continues, her gaze steady. "Right next to the corpse of a wanted terrorist."
She let the words hang in the air.
"Mind explaining what happened?"
Diff hesitates, rubbing the back of his head. "Well... I dunno. I was just trying to buy a graphics card, and then—boom—everything went to shit."
The silence stretched. The steady rhythm of rain was the only sound between them, thickening the tension.
Finally, she spoke again. "When I found you two, the one with the cowboy hat was injured, and you were lying there, unconscious... with your Vetra fading away."
"My what?" Diff frowns. "What the hell is a Vetra?"
She meets his eyes. "The monkey hands."
Diff's stomach twisted. He remembered the feeling—those hands, not his own, yet somehow a part of him.
"Vetra,"- she continues, "is the name for special powers. Some people are born with them, but most only unlock them through... tragic events." Her voice softened, but only slightly. "And some? Some never unlock them at all."
"So those monkey hands are my Vetra? Do they have any ability?"- Diff asked once again, but in a slightly less confused tone.
Diff took a big breath before blowing it out, trying to calm himself down. He tried to manifest those monkey hands again, his so called Vetra. The other person speech fades.
The arms appear out of nowhere, attached to Diff's clothes. Diff can move them like if they were his secondary arms.
A sudden feeling races trough him. A feeling of how he can use the ability of his Vetra.
"I think I can copy other Vetra?"- Diff asks in a quiet tone.
Then suddenly he gets smacked in the head with a brown bag, leaving a red mark on his face. The bag is filled with coins.
If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
"Listen already!"- She speaks in a louder, more annoyed voice before calming down and continuing. "You two killed a terrorist with a bounty on its head Even though he is a low ranked one. That's two hundred Draxes."
At this moment Johnny wakes up. He blinks a few times before looking around as he speaks.
"Who the hell are you and where are we?"
"Right, I forgot my manners. I am Yunyan, the leader of the 1111th division."- She speaks while looking at Diff and Johnny.
"Im Diff, and he is Johnny. And what is a Division? I never heard about them."- Diff spoke while pointing to himself, then Johnny.
"A division is an organization who receives commissions and has the right to complete them."- Yunyan explaining to them like if this was the most normal thing in the world.
Meanwhile the rain slowly starting to slow down before stopping completely. The fresh air that is left behind fills the crumbling old building, like if the building was taking a big breath of relaxation after a long day.
"By the way, the division is still hiring colleagues. I would happily have you two as my colleagues."- Yunyan spoke while holding out her arm towasd Diff and Johnny.
"I would gladly accept it, but I already have a job."- Johnny says with a proud smile on his face.
"Didn't you get fired from McDonald's like three days ago?"- Diff asked while looking at Johnny questionably.
"You know what, we would both like to apply."- Johnny spoke quickly while trying to change the topic.
"Excellent, you two have to fill out some paperwork beforehand. We are on the Evervale Peninsula."- Yunyan explaining as she stands up. "Shall we get going?"
Yunyan leads Diff and Johnny away. The road running through a dense forest. On the way birds were singing as the trio walks on a road made out of small flat stones. On both sides fences run along the road. Some has one or two feet big holes here and there.
They soon reached a town. The first things they see are multiple wide grape farms with people working on it. The workers collecting the grapes are in a happy mood. As soon as the workers spot Yunyan almost everyone waves at her with a happy smile.
"Yunyan dear, thank you for dealing with that big wolf monster the other day. It really scared some of us."- An elderly lady walks to Yunyan, holding a basket with four bunch of grapes in it. "Please accept this as my and the others gratitude."
"Thank you Granny Monika."- Yunyan thanked with a smile on her face. "How is everyone doing?"
"Oh great. Thanks to the division we are safe. If we need anything we will ask you."- Granny Monika nodded with a smile.
The trio continues their walk to the base of the 1111th division. They soon reach a building looking like a hotel, but a smaller version of one.
Yunyan suddenly turns around and looks at Johnny and Diff. "And this is your home too while you with us."
The base of the 1111th Division looks like a small hotel. It has three floors—the ground floor, a second floor, and the attic at the top. Each floor has balconies, with railings that looks a little old but still strong.
A small portion of the building side is covered in vines, and if someone looks closely, it can see small clusters of grapes growing between the leaves. Not far from the front, there's a glass greenhouse, slightly fogged up, with plants growing inside.
From the outside, the building feels quiet and peaceful. Nothing about it really says "unfriendly" or "harmful." It feels more like a big shared home.
Yunyan rushes to open the front door. As they step inside the first thing they see is a big wide dark brown staircase with a red non slippery carpet leading to the second floor. There are two hallways on either side of the staircase.
Yunyan automatically turns left and heads into the second room, which happens to be a kitchen. In the kitchen there is a person sitting at the kitchen table, three empty vodka bottles and a bunch of cloth pieces are all over the table. Meanwhile she is carefully filling up an empty vodka bottle with cooking oil.
She slowly hums a song, something about fire and burning. Then she starts to stuff a cloth into the neck of the bottle. Only now she spots Yunyan in the doorway, behind her Diff and Johnny.
She immediately stands up and poorly hides the bottle behind her back.
"Yunyan! Um... You said you won't come back for a couple more hours... And this is not what it looks like." – She speaks quietly.
She wears a loose red t-shirt and red leggings. Her brown hair is in a ponytail, by a red band. Her blue eyes shine as she continues.
"Am I in trouble?."
"Vaska. Give them a tour while I prepare the documents they need to sign. And also a coffee. Then send them into my office." - Yunyan speaks with a scary grin on her face.
After that, Yunyan leaves the room. Vaska turns to Diff and Johnny. "I am Vaska Emberlyne, the vice captain of the 1111th Division. And you two are?"
"I'm Diff, and he is Johnny." - Diff speaks while pointing to himself and to Johnny.
"Both you and Yunyan said that we are in the 1111th Division. Out of how many?" - Johnny asks.
"There's a total of 1112 Division, but the last one is a memorial one. So technically, we are at the bottom of the leaderboard." - Vaska informs as she puts the cooking oil into a drawer.
After a successful tour they head outside. "And here we have a garage." - Vaska speaks. In the garage there is an old, probably mass produced car. And two person next to it.
Person one laying under the car, only her leggings, covered in old oil spots are showing. Person two squatting next to the pair of legs while rumming through a box of tools.
"Paul, hand me Jeremy." - A woman's voice from under the car.
"These are tools. Not human beings, Erica." - The squatting person, Paul answered.
"Ugh, I meant the 12mm wrench." - The woman speaking from under the car, Erica. Vaska let out a loud cough, for both of them to hear. First Paul looked up.
"Oh, hey hothead. Are those rookies next to you?" - Paul speaks while pulling out Erica from under the car.
"Hm? Oh hey, newbies. I'm Erica and he is Paul." - Erica speaks while she stands up. Erica wears a pair of gray jacket and grey sweatpants, both clearly seen better days. There are goggles on her forehead.
Paul is wearing casual clothes, an all blue shirt and grey shorts. Diff leans close to Johnny to whisper. "Dude, that mechanic looking one has curves."
"Diff! First impressions!" - Johnny whispers back to Diff while elbowing into him.
"Well, Last place. The training grounds behind you." - Vaska speaks while pointing to a big place behind them. Multiple training dummies in a line, worn by time.
After the complete tour Diff and Johnny walked into Yunyan's office. Yunyan is sitting behind a big dark colored table in a leather chair. Behind her there is a bookshelf, covering the entire wall.
There is an open space in the bookshelf. In this open space there is a curved sword in a black sheet. On the sheet there is a coffee mug carved into it. "You two are finally here." - Yunyan speaks as she takes a sip from her coffee.
"Take out your ID, Social Security Card, Tax identification card, Address card, and if possible Drivers license." - Yunyan speaks. After a while of silently typing on a keyboard she speaks again.
"Okay. I don't care about your job experience. Have you two received medical and, or combat training before?" - Yunyan speaks with a sense of professionalism.
Both Diff and Johnny shakes his head. "No worries. Till you don't I sadly can't let either of you on a commission on a difficulty above 20. Which is our next topic."
Yunyan puts down her coffee mug. "We complete commissions. Each and every commission has its own difficulty, rated by the CWS, Central Work Safety."
"Before completing a commission you have to find me, so I can take it into account. And after completing one, you have to pay a certain percentage of the income to the Division, along with 10% tax to the government."
