Mimi was hungry. She was used to not eating much since she decided to stay with that human, but today it had been a long time since she had her last decent meal.
She lived alone for a long, long time. As far as Mimi remembered, actually, she always lived alone. But all changed when that stranger and stinky human decided to call her and give her some food.
But what really made her follow him to see if he could really be trusted was the petting he gave her, right in the middle of her ears.
She never felt something so good as that feeling. Not even eating felt that good.
She would trade food for his petting any time of the day. But now she didn’t have either of those. It had been a few hours already since he left, and that was a bit strange. Since they both started hanging out with each other, he never let Mimi be alone for that long.
Her stomach growled once again, begging for some food.
Mimi got up from the little improvised bed that the human created for her and walked towards the entrance of the sewer where they both lived.
The sky was grey and dark, and heavy rain was falling from it. Every few seconds, a lightning bolt lit up the sky.
Should I go out and search for him? she thought, looking up.
She could still smell him in the air. It wouldn’t be a problem to trace his steps. It would take some time and energy from her, but it was doable.
The only concern that Mimi had was if he arrived when she was not there. Then he would go after her, and they would never meet up again, locked in this search cycle.
After a few minutes of wondering, she decided to go out of the sewer for a bit. She always loved the rain and the touch of the drops against her body.
Mimi was jumping, enjoying the sound of her paws against the wet floor, when she heard some screams far, far away. That is odd, she thought to herself, but she kept playing in the rain. She preferred to stay away from human business. They were mean to her most of the time. She kept entertaining herself, forgetting about the hunger that kept growing in her stomach, hoping her human would arrive at any time, when something exploded on the horizon.
Well, that is also odd, she thought again.
She looked at the sewer entrance, considering whether she should go back inside and keep herself safe. But what if her human was near that chaos? What if he needed some help from her?
She stayed there for a minute, looking from the sewer to the explosion, when she finally decided. Also, she was curious to see what that could be.
She started running from the sidewalk of the sewer, keeping alert and listening to any strange sound that could come from her surroundings. She knew that it was very important for her to avoid any other humans. They were not good. Especially with stray animals like her.

The rain kept falling, and she loved the touch of it and the smell of the wet ground it produced. The scent of her owner was still fresh on her trail though. She kept following it.
New explosions and columns of smoke were showing up more and more the closer she got to the city.
Three minutes later, she arrived at the place where Ugly Rat sat, asking for food and money.
She looked around, but she didn’t find him anywhere. She stayed hidden by the bushes, surprised by what her eyes saw.
The humans were in chaos. Some of them were running and screaming out loud, like she had never seen before. Others were running after each other, beating and biting them, as if they were angry dogs.
One of those angry humans was running and stopped in front of her. His red eyes started rolling around, yellow saliva dropping down his mouth, and his face and body were covered with blood. He started huffing around in Mimi’s direction, staring at her for a few seconds. Mimi was ready to run away and go back to the sewer when the human growled out loud and then kept running, changing his attention to a blond woman who was crying on the street a few meters from Mimi.
She didn’t understand what had just happened. Were the humans crazy? She had never seen them attacking each other like that before. And why did that one just ignore her? It was not usual for humans to see her and not try to do anything to push her away.
She decided to keep following Ugly Rat’s scent to try to find him. He would know what to do. Mimi started getting a bit nervous and afraid now. All she wanted was to find her human and get back to their home, where he would scratch her ears until she fell asleep.
She went back inside the forest and kept following his smell from a hidden and safer place.
The more she walked, the more humans were running around screaming. But she started noticing that more and more of them were also growling like the one that stopped in front of her before.
She had never heard humans make that sound before. It was very similar to the sound she would make when she wanted to keep other dogs or humans away, but yet they were different from hers.
She ran for a while until she found a place full of abandoned buildings. Her owner’s scent was very strong there. Mimi started waving her tail, excited to finally reunite with him. That had been a weird day so far, and she was certain he would know what to do.
She followed the scent to a house, but she couldn’t find him anywhere there. She started barking loudly to see if he would show up, but he didn’t come.
Mimi sat on the floor, praying to the dog god to bring him to her. She didn’t want to be alone again. She wanted him back, so they both could hunt together and then go back to their home to chill with each other.
She barked again, a last chance to try to draw his attention to her. She didn’t know what to do.
His scent stopped there, as if he had just evaporated from the earth.
She decided she searched enough. She would go home, and on the way home she would try to find some food and water. She was so focused on finding Ugly Rat that she forgot how hungry and now thirsty she was.
Those angry humans were showing up more and more now, with those red eyes and that ugly yellow thing coming out of their mouths. They always looked at Mimi and then ignored her, running away like crazy idiots.
On the way back, she smelled some food left on the ground, and that made her day a little better. She ate almost an entire burger that someone left behind on the ground.
Oh god dog, this is so good, she thought.
She also found some candy, chips, and half of a hot dog. It was never that easy to find food, good food like this, on the ground.
After her belly was full, she went to the little river near her home and drank some water. The day was almost coming to an end now.
She missed her owner. She looked up at the smoke on the horizon and hoped he was safe. She was going to her home to sleep, and hopefully, when she woke up, he would be back.
