Chapter 28: Tower defense

Adam woke up early in the morning due to the shuffling sounds that Kleoff and Charlie were making. They were preparing things they would need to bring to the island.

They have decided that they should not charge recklessly and instead let the greys attack them, that way when they came from the island and through the causeway they would be there, with the machine gun waiting.

  “This early?” Adam asked.

Charlie simply nodded and continued packing his bags. Adam eventually stretched and did the same thing as well. After finishing that the trio went down stairs and saw Kate and Althea by the kitchen. Adam smelled something being cooked and figured it must have been Althea making them breakfast.

The three sat at the table and after some time Althea returned with a tray filled with soups, Charlie helped her out in distributing the breakfast and they all ate quietly.

After the meal was done no one spoke and when someone finally did it was Kate.

  “We should go”

The group nodded and took everything they would need. Adam excused himself saying he would check the car.

When he did, the early rays of sun bathed his face, almost blinding him.

He had to cover his eyes with his hand, he realized that it was fully healed by now. Yet there they were charging back at the cause of its damage.

He was able to adjust to the light within a few seconds and he proceeded to enter the car. He inserted the key, pressed start and then gently stepped on the gas.

The car hummed, he then get out of the car letting the engine run while he waited for the rest of the group. The brothers arrived first, they patted their respective horses and removed their leashes that tied them to a nearby lamp post.

Althea and Kate followed, with Althea having a bow hung to her back and a quiver to her side waist. She also carried a bag on her other hand, Kate did too. Only that she had a rifle slung to her shoulder.

The brothers then rode their mounts and signalled Adam that they would go first to scout the area. Adam nodded as he helped Kate and Althea with their bags.

The three slid into the car with Adam shifting it to drive and pressing the gas.

After only a few minutes they were able to gain sight of the brother's horses, Adam assumed the brothers left them far enough from the causeway that they wouldn't be scared from the gunshots.

Adam kept the car moving slow and eventually arrived at the shore. He got out being followed by Althea and Kate. They also saw the brothers waiting for them.

“We should set that up by the causeway,” Kleoff said, looking at the machine gun.

The plan basically was to keep the machine gun right in front of the causeway, with it being narrow aiming would be easy and the creatures were more likely to push each other off the sea.

Adam stepped towards the steel cart carrying the massive gun and removed its link at the car.

Charlie stepped closer as well, immediately understanding that they wouldn't be able to pull it with the car anymore and that they would have to do it manually.

The two pulled the cart to the shore with Kleoff pushing it from the back.

It was difficult though for the three of them due to the uneven surface of the shore, fortunately after some time they managed to reach its optimal position which is just right in front of the causeway.

  “So what now?” Charlie asked

“Weren’t you the one who brought that?” Althea asked, her voice incredulous

“I mean i have a vague idea but i never really used it” Charlie argued

“That's m2 browning, we should be fine as long as we insert the metal belt that feeds the ammo” Kate explained.

“How did you even know that?” Kleoff asked.

“I read about it when I was younger”

“Why did I even ask?” Kleoff said in almost a whisper.

This narrative has been purloined without the author's approval. Report any appearances on Amazon.

Kate stepped closer to feed the belt into the gun, she was about to finish setting it up when Adam caught a figure walking at the causeway.

It was hunched, a little too far for Adam to make out its detail but it was walking straight towards them.

It didn't seem to notice them however if it kept moving towards its direction it would eventually see them.

The creature kept getting closer and closer until suddenly it tilted its head and revealed its green eyes staring at them.

  “Uhh Kate?” Adam spoke.

  “Hmm?”

  “Can you do that faster?”

Just as Adam finished his sentence the creature screeched and started running towards them. Adam pulled out his gun and aimed at the monster, he however didn’t fire, doing so would get the other grey's attention and right now the gun wasn't ready for them.

The rest of the group noticed it as well, Charlie pulled out his revolver and Althea her bow. The image of the creature charging in front of her seemed to invoke some fear as she failed to load her bow with an arrow a couple of times.

The monster kept moving closer and closer. Althea's hand was shaking, she dropped her bow upon realizing it was almost at the end of the causeway.

“Got it” Kate spoke as she took aim.

The gun made some mechanical sound before finally firing a couple of rounds at the monster, whose body had received several large holes.

The ground shook from the gun's recoil and its tripod seemed to barely be able to keep it standing.

Smoke came from its nozzle as Kate’s widened eyes stared at the rest of the group.

“Well, now they would know we're here” Kate said.

“I think they already knew,” Kleoff said as he pointed at a series of grey skinned monsters charging in their direction.

Kate sighed and started firing once more, the earth continued shaking as the deafening gunshots echoed the rest of the groups ears

Despite the enormous firepower the machine gun was displaying the greys kept flooding out of the island almost endlessly to the point where Adam and Charlie had to fire every time Kate reloaded. Suddenly Adam saw something from the corner of his eye. He turned his head around and saw a grey quickly running towards Kate’s direction. Before it could even come close, he fired a shot, hitting it directly at its skull.

However, that said creature didn’t appear to be alone as several other figures appeared all around them. Adam had to step behind the group and started firing his gun at each, Charlie noticing his struggle decided to help. Althea tried to load her bow several times, but fear seemed to have overwhelmed her. Her hand kept shaking and was unable to release even a single arrow. Gunshot had been ringing on his ear and figures were surrounding them and yet she was unable to do anything but succumb to her fears.

When she was needed the most was when she had failed them, she then realized as she stared at the monsters flooding out of the causeway that the man she wanted to take vengeance on was just behind those creatures.

The same man that she fears.

Kate seemed to have realized the urgency of the situation as she called Kleoff to use the machine gun so that she could help Adam and Charlie.

Just as she did, a grey had managed to slip past the men and was about to lurch towards Kate who wasn’t paying attention.

Adam turned and noticed that the creature was about to pounce, he aimed using his gun and fired but all he heard was a click, instead of looking for a new magazine he shouted to warn Kate.

As Kate heard the shout she turned around and saw the creature almost a few feet away, she tried to pull herself out of the way but before she could an arrow flew straight towards its skull. Blood gashed from the wound as the creature fell lifeless.

Kate looked at the direction the arrow had come from, it was Althea.

She was gasping for breath with a streak of sweat trickling down her face but she was no longer shaking, instead she looked determined. Kate nodded at her as she stepped closer to Adam with her rifle raised.

It seemed almost like an endless wave Adam thought. The number of greys in a single area usually aren’t this high, he was sure that Nolan was waiting for them and he had prepared this much.

Adams felt cold sweat at this forehead as he kept firing at their assailants that were coming from all over the place .

If the pace of monsters kept up they would soon run out of resources, what more was that they haven’t even seen The massive grey from the Horde neither was Nolan.

Adam was trying to figure out a solution but nothing seemed to be going their way, they never predicted this much greys. The fact that they were still alive was already thanks to luck.

Minutes had passed to what the group felt like an eternity, Adam sighed and loaded a new magazine as he looked around. The greys had dwindled in amount, most of the greys were now only coming from the island's direction and no longer the houses. However the machine gun’s ammo to his disappointment was also quickly depleting. He checked the causeway and there weren’t that many greys as earlier.

He tapped Kleoff's shoulder to signal him to stop.

The deafening gunshot that had come from the machine gun stilled. Leaving them with a weird quiet feeling.

Adam stepped forward, closer to the causeway and raised his gun with one of his hands to aim at the creatures.

  One

  Two

Three gunshots fired that broke the silence.

The last few greys had been shot and the causeway was now painted red and grey. Adam looked around and checked, the group that were surrounded with several grey corpses, they were all tired and bloodied but thankfully not injured.

He checked the machine gun and realized that it was at its last belt of ammunition and it had already spent almost half.

He sighed and had to sit, leaning at the steel cart.

From this point onward they would have to decide if they would infiltrate the island or wait for Nolan to reveal himself.

The thought didn’t last long as Kate pointed at the far end of the course, a male figure was approaching them and appeared to be carrying something.

“That’s Nolan, Fire Kleoff” Charlie instructed.

“Wait, there’s something wrong,” Kate said as she placed her hand on Kleoff’s shoulder.

They let the figure get closer, confirming that it indeed really was Nolan, however he appeared to be not alone as he was dragging Althea's mother with him.
