Chapter 20 - Doubt in Existence

Mira surveyed the town square and studied the expression of every hardened hunter and adventurer. Each person had been through wars and battles within dungeons, towers, beast tides, and even the occasional one had seen a Breach and made it out alive in the smaller villages outside of their Breach Line of villages. Each one was capable enough to defend themselves.

Together, they were an army capable of keeping this place safe.

Hundreds of men and women that would come to slaughter thousands of void-being demons.

“Have you seen Praven?” The Warden stepped away from the command center. A rare treat for everyone within the town.

Mira shook her head. “Itmund and his twin said he left with the giant warrior. Kalim with him.”

“They plan to kill off the Breach? At least they are being productive with their time–”

Breach Spark has transformed into a full Breach!

  Warning! Warning! Warning!

Breach arrival - 35 seconds! Prepare for war!

Silence rocked the entire city as every single person alive within a thousand miles received the same exact message.

Their time was over and they hadn’t even marched their forces toward the Breach yet.

“What have they done?!” the Warden shouted. He vanished from his spot and back into the Command Center. Playing his role in the long battle that was to come by being the source of power that kept the from killing and kidnapping more of their kind for their experiments and crazed madness. Insane things that arrived ages ago, yet the peoples of this planet could not force them out.

Mira understood that the system was also one of their creations, but that had been a stolen artifact by their ancestors they had ripped from the damnable claws of the .

Now it was their strength against the abominations.

“Into positions!” Mira shouted over the eruption of action that occurred. “Form lines! Battle horns sound! Mana cannons! Prepare to activate the town's barriers!”

People ran left and right as they got into positions.

They would be caught unawares now because something happened while Aethernus Vhal and the two knights were dealing with the Breach Spark. A thousand ideas of what might have happened crossed her mind, but she made sure to keep them in the background as she focused on moving men into their proper position. Final powering of mana cores, checking the arrays and mana cannons were all good to go and would not blow up in their faces, and more.

Four men stood at the top of the tallest building, massive warhorns placed on the roof ciel. They took a deep breath and bellowed–

She gave the vanguard leader the signal.

“Forward!” the man shouted. “Forward toward destiny! Toward glory! Toward honor! Forward!”

The vanguard moved and the rest of the army followed. Marching ahead to the waiting place where they expected to be thousands of creatures already on the battlefield and spewing out of the tear within the sky. This time around, they couldn’t lay in waiting as they came out blind and killed them. They couldn’t weaken the Breach and prevent the entrance of the TitanModel abomination.

Mira prayed to Heaven for victory because they needed a miracle.

They passed the farm land and started feeling the first signs of mana within the air, shaking and trembling as Aethernus Vhal committed to battle.

She expected him to do well. Maybe even clear a large portion of the army, but nothing more. Their numbers were simply too great, the amount of forces varying, individual strength greater than average this time around, and worse yet, the TitanModel would step into reality without anyone to meet it. That was if the controlling the Breach did not end up sending higher tier monsters.

Mira stayed at the back of the army, watching as the mages worked in a hurry to prepare a few more mana cannons and maybe even a couple Breach wipe attacks that would clear entire swaths. She needed to make sure her presence calmed their nerves and kept them steady. The last thing they needed was an explosion killing a dozen men and breaking their morale before the fight even started. That would curse them for generations if they ever made it out alive.

No one wanted to be the failure on the Breach Line.

“Lady Mira!” a hunter arrived before her from the vanguard.

Mira looked at the confused expression of the man and frowned. “Speak.”

“Knight Praven and Knight Kalim have been spotted retreating toward us. They’ve reached the vanguard and reports are only a few moments away from reaching the main army.”

“I see,” Mira nodded. It made sense. Who in their right mind would stand before a full Breach– “Wait… You didn’t mention the foreign warrior?”

The man nodded. “Praven said the man told them to run. He stood there alone against the Breach.”

Mira sighed. This was not information she thought was unexpected. Many an uninitiated warrior would come from different lands and not understand what they face. The danger that is the Breach. Arrogance filled their hearts and souls until the moment finally arrived for them to fight against the tide that it was. Only then did they learn of their grand mistake.

That was life. People who don’t listen to the advice of those who have more experience tend to die off quickly anyway.

“Take me to him.” Mira jumped off the wagon she was on.

It didn’t take long for their enhanced bodies to push through the jogging lines. Snaking between them until they found their way to the very head of the army.

Mira found Praven and Kalim reaching them a moment before her arrival.

“Praven!” she shouted and waved him toward her.

The fire knight hurried to her. “He’s insane! The man is insane! Aethernus Vhal stared down the TitanModel without wavering! I’ve never seen anyone use so much mana–”

  “Deep breath and slow down.”

“He…” Praven took a deep breath and let his shoulders sag. “The man cleared out the Breach Spark alone and then demanded the Breach to satisfy his desire for battle because it was pathetically weak. Aethernus Vhal asked for more to kill. I retreated when there were almost a thousand demons charging him, yet he looked as bored as when we first arrived. And then…”

“And then what?” Mira narrowed her eyes.

Kalim stepped forward. “We sensed him pulling more mana than either one of us could imagine as we retreated back here. It wasn’t the sword's ability either, yet it looked the same.”

Mira gave them crooked eyebrow. She didn’t need to say anything to show how incredibly unbelievable that sounded.

“He’s right,” Praven audibly gulped. Even through his armor. “The monster taught himself to cast using spell matrixes before our own eyes. Not mentioning he destroyed the first wave alone. It didn’t even look like he broke a sweat–”

Every single person snapped their heads toward the Breach.

“L-Look!” Praven pointed to the sky.

Those with mana sight activated their ability and nearly dropped. Each person stared in awe as a massive spell matrix materialized above the forest and gathered energy in flooding waves and pulses. Growing stronger every moment it remained alive.

And then they saw it shift and repair its function.

A few mages dropped unconscious as they tried to break down the changes only to suffer mana blowback.

They heard the TitanModel roar, its distinctive voice was like the shearing or metal the size of a mountain, in outrage. The Breach rose as it widened it and forced itself upon the world. Towering over everything in the area and showing them that they were too late to stop it from entering into their world. A bloody cost would be required to send it back… unless.

Mira watched as the spinning spell matrix finally locked into place and then it activated–

White light flooded all their senses.

Every man and woman within the army dropped unconscious as mana flooded the world and the gargantuan spell matrix washed it with flames and death.
