Gen 1 Learning Curve

A giant computer screen with lots of keyboards and shortcuts stood at the center of the lab. On the left of the screen was a Pokèmon transfer machine for trainers to send Pokèmon back to the lab for safe keeping. Only trainers and researchers registered with the lab could store and keep Pokèmon at Professor Oak’s facilities. “Here we can communicate with our registered trainers and researchers. They will also reach out when they need a Pokèmon or want to discuss some research” Professor Oak told me as he showed me how to use the computer. It honestly felt like stepping back in time and using my first desktop on Windows 95 all over again. “Such simple technology, and so straight forward” I mumbled to myself. Right then, the transfer machine turned on and a Pokèball appeared. “Ah, perfect timing. Now we can see here that this Pokèmon was transferred from our field researcher on Cinnabar Island. Looks like he sent us a Koffing that he says has a weird mark on its chest. We can examine it later once we finish the tour” the Professor said to me as he turned and walked towards the left side of the lab.

“This area is where I keep Pokèmon I am currently studying and doing research on” the Professor said as he flipped some switches. “On this table, I currently am working on examining three Pokèmon I plan to use as starter Pokèmon for some new trainers. They should be here in about 2 to 3 weeks from Viridian Town” The Professor told me as he pulled up a monitor on the side of the machine. “The three most common Pokèmon I give to new trainers are Charmader, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur” the Professor said showing me their images on the monitor. “Do you know if these three have their basic abilities or their hidden abilities? Also, do you know what nature each has, or do you let the trainer figure all that out?” I asked the Professor noticing that there was no notes on the monitor about each starter. “Sorry, you lost me… what do you mean by abilities and nature?” The Professor asked me.

After an hour discussion and a lot of writing information on his white board to explain everything, the Professor was slumped in his chair looking completely defeated. “Professor are you okay?” I asked gently. “Austin, this information has been theorized for years, but no one has been able to confirm it. Yet here you are, only been in my lab for a couple hours, and you have already taught me more…” Professor Oak said holding his head in his hands. “We will need to begin working on this straight away! I have to get this new information to our trainers and researchers as soon as possible!” The Professor said as he ran over to his computer.

The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there.

30 minutes later and 4 phone calls later, the Professor finally started to calm down. “Austin since you are new to this world, we will need to find you a place to stay. You can either stay here at the lab in one of our spare rooms, or you can stay with my family in town until you get your own place” the Professor said to me as he continued to take notes from the white board. “Oh yeah, I don’t have any money from this world… I don’t have any possessions… All I have are the clothes on my back” I said with a slight panic in my voice. Oh goodness, I am a hobo for all intents and purposes I thought to myself. I need to make sure I keep my job here no matter what, without this job I have quite literally nothing else in this world.

Once Professor Oak finished taking notes about abilities, hidden abilities, and Pokèmon natures he turned to look at me only to see me having a mental breakdown and staring off into space. “Austin, I have another question based off these shorthand words you wrote next to natures. When you write SPAT and SPDF what are you referring to?” The Professor asked me to try and lure me out of my trance. “Those refer to Special Attack and Special Defense. Special Attack refers to attacks that don’t involve physical impact such as Flamethrower and Thunderbolt. Special Defense reflects how well a Pokèmon defends against Special Attacks and how much damage they will take. For example, Chansey does not have very good defense against physical attacks, but it can defend very well against Special Attacks, and they do lower damage to Chansey” I stated confidently using my knowledge from the games and years of playing all the newer versions of the games. “Wait… are you saying Special is actually two separate categories?!?!? This was always theororized, but… QUICK! Tell me which Pokèmon have strong Special Attack and which have strong Special Defense” Professor Oak exclaimed as he ran to gather more notepads to take notes.

Another hour later, the sun has gone down and Professor Oak is typing furiously to send out additional emails to the trainers and researchers. “Professor Oak, I don’t mean to be rude, but do you perhaps have any food here we could eat? I haven’t eaten since I arrived in this world actually now that I think about it” I said trying to hide the sounds of my stomach eating itself. “Oh my goodness, look at the time. Of course we can get something to eat. We also need to feed the Pokèmon their dinner as well” Professor Oak said apologetically running over to the stairs in the corner. “Austin, can you help me to quickly give all the Pokèmon their food and then we can head into town to have dinner with my grandkids?” Professor Oak asked from the stairs. “Of course Professor! More than happy to help” I said with a smile. Time to find out what they actually feed Pokèmon here. I really hope that it isn’t that kibble stuff they used to show in the tv show…
