Chapter 2: A Debt At Birth

The cold hit him as he came out into the light and it was so bright that he couldn’t open his eyes.

There were voices speaking but Cutter couldn’t hear them clearly.

He was completely out of sorts.

He decided the best thing to do was just to act like a baby would. He didn’t cry out, instead he started wriggling like a worm and make enough noise to let the Doctor know he was alive.

I swear if the doctor slaps my ass, I will get revenge no matter what.

Luckily for Cutter, and the doctor, the slap never came.

He felt himself being wiped down by what seemed to be a wet towel and getting bundled up like a little baby burrito in a blanket.

Some of the fluid dulling his hearing cleared out from the jostling about and he was able to hear the voices more clearly.

“Congratulations My Lady Surefire, it’s a healthy baby boy," the voice of an older lady, the Doctor said.

A blue light came out of the doctor’s hand that covered Cutter for a few moments.

“Everything looks good. Here Ada, bring the boy to his mother.”

The doctor passed Cutter to the nurse, Ada, who gave an affirmation and then started walking.

Cutter was conflicted. He wasn’t interested in family, considering he had lived so long, but at the same time he started feeling anticipation.

I wonder what my new mother’s like.

A disgruntled voice of a woman cut his thoughts short, “Ugh.. it’s almost over.”

Cutter heard his mother gasping as he was brought closer to her, but before he was put into her arms...

“Felly, take it. This is your charge now.”

  Ada stopped walking.

Cutter’s heart sank. He inwardly shook his head.

  So she's like that.

He remembered his father and mother from his first life and felt despondent like he hadn’t for quite a while.

It’s been so long, hasn’t it?

There was a flash of a memory of a burning city, and he quickly put it out of his mind.

“Yes mi’Lady!” came a nervous exclamation.

The nurse turned and handed Cutter into the hands of the woman. Her hands were larger than the nurse’s and felt a bit rougher.

As he was handed over, Felly pulled him in close. She was soft and warm.

“I’ll watch him as if he was my own. Does he have a name, mi’Lady?”

“The Lord gave the name Serin. So, it is. Now, take that thing to it’s room. I have a migraine and I don’t want to hear it crying, thank mercy it hasn’t already.”

  Cutter’s mother waved Felly off.

  “Yes mi’Lady,” Felly replied.

Cutter felt himself moving once again.

“Doctor Mel, would you mind if I went along with Felly?” the nurse Ada asked.

  Felly stopped to wait.

“That should be no problem. Good work today, hon,” Doctor Mel said with appreciation.

Then, the two ladies headed out of the room.

  ============================

As Felly walked she turned to the nurse, “Thanks for comin’, Ada dear. I was a little nervous to be going on my own.”

“I knew you would be, that’s why I came with you."

  “Thanks all the same."

“I’m actually quite happy for you. I've been feeling guilty that we couldn’t help with your... loss.”

Ada hesitated. A quiet moment passed between the two women.

“Well, now you’re the head maid of a child of Surefire. You’re set.”

Felly leaned into Ada and put her head on Ada’s shoulder as they stopped walking.

“I never blamed you love. What is to be will be. Besides, I still got my health and a purpose. And a friend. And that’s all I need. So don’t feel guilt on your part."

Felly separated from Ada and the pair started walking again.

As for this little one, well, all the love I’d have given my own will be this little Master’s.”

Cutter, who had been feeling a little despondent, was quite touched by his new maid.

Looks like I lucked out on a protector. Although it sounds like it came at her own expense I’ll make sure you won’t regret it lady.

He decided he wanted to get a look at Felly and did his best to open his eyes.

It was still a bit blurry but as he opened his own purple eyes, he saw two ladies and two kind smiles.

"Oh dear, he opened his eyes. Hello Serin, you're a Surefire for sure with those purple eyes of yours," Felly said.

Felly, who was holding him, was a buxom lady with brown-reddish hair. She had freckles and green eyes, which Cutter thought was quite charming. She was in a classic black and white maid outfit and was a bit shorter than the other woman.

Next to her was Ada, a petite dark-haired brunette with dark brown eyes. She was wearing a plain white dress with a white apron that had a few new stains on it.

  They both looked exhausted.

“Well, he’s going to need all that love considering how the Lady was treating him,” Ada said with a laugh.

  Cutter laughed too.

It sounded like a squeak from a rubber duck but the women were delighted.

After a couple of “Oohs” and “Ahs” towards Cutter. Felly turned to her friend and rebuked her.

“Don’t say such things. You never know if someone will hear you.”

“Oh posh, even the little Master didn't mind!"

The women kept chatting quietly as they headed through a hallway.

Cutter couldn’t see much but he was able to see light stones embedded in the top of a wall made of brick.

He could also see that some windows they passed were completely dark outside. It was night time.

At this moment, he was pretty pleased with his current situation. He had a couple nice ladies looking out for him and his family was rich.

Overall, he felt like his future prospects were looking quite good.

That was until the next moment when he heard a familiar voice.

“Oh you were born again. That did not take as long as I thought it would. Humans procreate fast, do they not?”

  Cutter’s mood instantly sank.

“Hey brat. Hey. Hey. HEY! Are you ignoring me? Are you going to say something. The gall!”

Cutter was getting more and more pissed as the voice kept talking.

He tried to spit but since he was a baby it actually came out as drool which made him even more pissed and a little embarrassed.

This ass! My vocal chords are underdeveloped and so are my jaw muscles, how am I supposed to say something?! And I haven’t formed a soul core yet, so I can’t use telepathy either. Please just shut up!

  The voice did not.

It continued jabbering when Cutter was brought to his nursery.

It was a beautiful, spacious room with black carpet with a large furry, white rug beneath the jewel-adorned crib in the center of the room. There were purple curtains on the window with the crest of house Surefire, a purple wisp of flame with a halo of black, embroidered in them.

There was a bed and bathroom for Felly, a small bathtub raised up to easily bathe a baby, a changing station that was completely stocked with diapers, powder, and lotion, and everything else a nursery would need from stuffed animals to towels.

Unfortunately for Cutter, he wasn’t in the mood to enjoy his new room because he was getting bombarded by the voice’s questions, comments, and complaints.

The only thing Cutter could do was endure it.

I'm not a damn HR Department!

Apparently, the voice didn’t like the motif of a dragon that was painted on one of the light purple walls.

  Well, that's a valid complaint.

Then, he went on to voice his dislike of the color of the wall itself.

This little nitpicker is driving me crazy!

Regardless, the voice still didn’t stop.

When Cutter was taken out of his blanket by Ada, the voice criticized her for having hair that was “too short.”

When Cutter was getting bathed, the voice criticized Cutter’s chubby belly.

When Cutter was getting dried off and his first diaper was put on him, the voice criticized his little little man.

Which was a low blow considering he had just been in the bath.

Cutter had felt that he was holding his anger back admirably but, then came his first feeding time.

He was already feeling embarrassed as Felly started to take off the white apron of her maid uniform.

Okay, this is to survive. Don’t worry, Felly I’ll make sure to pay you back for all this one day. Ugh, just gotta do it…

I hope this doesn’t awaken something in me.

Before he had time to prepare himself his head was shoved right into something soft, where he proceeded to start drinking his fill.

Then, the voice jeered, “Oh my, this lass is quite stacked. How lucky you are brat.”

  Cutter started seeing red.

How dare you talk about Felly like that!

She’s shown me kindness and is going to be protecting me while I’m at my weakest.

  HOW DARE YOU!?

"Oh my, the little Master's got quite a bite!" Felly exclaimed.

Cutter, once again brought himself under control, at least for now.

As Cutter continued feeding, he stewed in rage.

As the jeers kept coming, he got angrier and angrier.

After about twenty minutes, Cutter was full.

Felly wiped up both of them with a towel, and then laid Cutter in his crib for the first time.

That was when the voice said, “Ahhh... You should have kept going, I was enjoying the show.”

  That was the last straw.

Cutter had been stewing his anger for too long and he finally erupted with a mighty roar while slamming the crib to pieces!

Or at least that’s what Cutter was intending, but all that came out was a loud baby’s cry and he wiggled a bit like a worm.

Felly had her back turned as she was walking toward the bathroom and nearly jumped.

Ada, who had been sitting and chatting while Felly was breastfeeding, also jumped up and both women ran to the crib.

“Oh little Master, what’s wrong? Are you alright?! Oh my goodness his face is bright red, check him Ada!”

Ada put her face closer to look Cutter over, breathed in, and immediately stepped back and plugged her nose.

“Oh my, the first one’s always the worst. I think he’s probably fine Felly, he must have just… overexerted himself a little."

  She started laughing.

“That was quite some cry though. And you’re dealing with that mess yourself.”

  Felly seemed a little confused.

  “Overexerted?”

Then, she also plugged her nose.

“Oh my, that is ripe isn’t it, dear?”

  She also started to laugh.

She stepped up to the crib, picked up Cutter, and started walking to the changing station.

“Congratulations little master. Your first poopy. You’ve been so quiet, I didn’t expect such a noise. Quite a set of lungs you got. Next time, no need to be so loud."

She talked cheerfully as she started changing his diaper.

Cutter was beyond embarrassment at this point.

Maybe The Voice didn’t see that.

  His hopes were immediately dashed.

Stifled laughter turned into a roar.

“Oh no way! That was hilarious. Congratulations little poopy Master. Ahahah!"

There was more of The Voice's broken laughter.

"I am sorry but I knew you couldn’t reply."

There was another pause for more laughter.

"I wanted to have a little fun, and I sure did."

The laughter started dying out at this point.

"Well, do not be too mad now. We can consider it interest for saving you from losing your memories.”

The only thing Cutter wanted right now was TO FORGET his memories.

  The Voice finally stopped laughing.

“Anyways, I cannot stay awake for much longer. Next time I wake up, we will have to have a discussion.”

Cutter noted that The Voice sounded weary as it trailed off and the only voices Cutter could hear were Ada and Felly’s talking back and forth.

As Cutter thought about what the voice had said, his rage started to simmer into a cold fury.

Unfortunately as it did, whether it was the outburst or simply because he was a baby, a bit of the meal he had before came spilling out of his mouth onto himself.

Felly had just finished changing Cutter’s diaper.

“Oh dear, looks like it’s coming out of all ends it is!”

  Felly and Ada laughed again.

Then Felly cleaned him up and put him back in his crib.

He didn’t realize when he was put into his crib he had been thinking only of the word “interest” the voice used before.

Interest? Interest eh? That son of a bitch.

Helping me and making fun of me are actions both paid in different currencies.

The “interest” I paid today I will be getting back from you a thousand fold. Just you wait!

As Cutter laid there with anger in his heart and vengeance on his mind, the only comfort he had was the fact that the voice hadn’t seen him spit up all over himself before he ended his first night as Serin Surefire.
