The transition was not a birth; it was an execution.
As Rayn’s fingers curled around the 14th Law—the forbidden Void Scourge
Inside his Dantian, the King DD CoreExtraction
Then came the pain.
It was a sensation that transcended the physical. It was as if his very identity was being shredded by a million microscopic razors. Rayn fell to his knees, his forehead striking the cold stone floor, but he didn't feel the impact. He only felt the Soul-Shatter
In the theater of his mind, a veil of grey mist was burned away by the fires of memory. He saw a sky filled with nine suns. He saw the Celestial Court of the Eternal Star
he whispered within the void of his own mind.
The name was a thunderclap. With it came the flood of his true history. He remembered the era of the Great AscensionAurelia—the Emperor Dominatrix.
He remembered the night of the Star-Fall BanquetGod-Slayer Dagger
"Why, Aurelia?" his memory-self gasped as the poison of a thousand dead suns began to rot his soul.
"Because, Wang Ming," her voice echoed, beautiful and terrible. "The heavens are too small for two Sovereigns. Your son will be the heir to a throne you are too 'kind' to protect."
He remembered his comrades—the men who had sworn oaths of eternal loyalty—standing in the shadows of the pillars, their weapons drawn not to defend him, but to ensure his end. He had been betrayed by everyone he ever trusted. He had been slaughtered by the very world he had spent eons protecting.
Rayn’s eyes snapped open in the laboratory.
The air in the room didn't just feel heavy; it felt murderous
Rayn’s face had lost all traces of youthful hesitation. His features had sharpened into a mask of ancient, glacial arrogance. The "Rayn" who cared about blending in was dead. The Yao Wang Ming
he thought, his heart turning into a block of obsidian.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
He looked at his hands, his knuckles white as he gripped the floor.
"You wait for me, Aurelia!" Rayn suddenly screamed, his voice carrying the weight of a dying star. "I am coming for you! I will find you in the highest heaven or the deepest hell, and I will make you pay for every drop of blood I spilled for you!"
The scream caused a shockwave that sent Benson and Veora crashing to the floor. The ritual marks on the ground glowed a sickly, bruised black before finally fading.
The silence that followed was absolute. The room was a wreck of shattered glass and scorched stone. Rayn slowly stood up, his movements fluid and precise—the movements of a predator that had finally remembered it had claws.
Vespera was the first to reach him. Her golden eyes were wide with a mix of shock and devotion. She reached out to touch his face, her hands trembling. "Rayn... Rayn, you’re back. I saw the light... you were screaming names I didn't know..."
Rayn looked at her. For a moment, Vespera felt as though she were staring into the eyes of a thousand-year-old monster. There was no affection in his gaze, only a clinical, detached appraisal. He slowly, firmly removed her hands from his face.
"I am fine, Vespera," he said, his voice as cold as the void between stars. "What is done, is done."
Benson scrambled to his feet, his face pale as a ghost. He looked at his instruments, then at Rayn. "Lad... that was... I have never seen an awakening like that. The pressure was... it was Sovereign-level. But..." He swallowed hard, looking at the readout on a small, brass device. "It seems the Ichor was mostly wasted. You have awakened the Void Scourge
Benson looked at Rayn with genuine pity. "I didn't mention it earlier because it’s a joke among Alchemists. It is the weakest path in the Ouroboros cycle. It gives you no fire, no strength, no shadow. It simply allows you to feel the 'void' of others. Even a common street laborer usually awakens something better. I am sorry, Rayn. Fate has played a cruel trick on you."
Rayn didn't blink. He knew why Benson saw it that way. The "Void Scourge" wasn't a power of this world. To these people, it looked like a failure. But Rayn felt the truth. The Void Scourge was the Law of Reclamationerased
"The Void Scourge is enough for what I intend to do," Rayn said, his voice flat.
"Vespera," Rayn commanded, turning toward her. "It is your turn. We do not have the luxury of time."
Vespera, seeing the change in her master, didn't hesitate. She drained the crystal glass. For several minutes, the room was bathed in a majestic, shimmering golden light—a sharp contrast to the violent crimson Rayn had produced.
Benson’s jaw dropped. "By the Throne... the Royal Blue state! She has awakened The Actor (Law of Persona)
Rayn allowed a thin, razor-sharp smile to touch his lips.
Suddenly, the laboratory began to dissolve again. The gold light of Vespera’s awakening was replaced by the familiar, thick grey-black fog. The world of Ashbury vanished, and Rayn found himself standing once more in the timeless void he had visited between lives.
A voice, deep and resonant, echoed from the mist.
"Yao Wang Ming... the Sovereign of the Nine Suns. You have finally opened your eyes."
Rayn didn't flinch. He narrowed his crimson eyes, his soul bracing for a conflict. "I know that voice. You are the one who talks to me in earth.
"Yes, I am an old friend of yours. You may call me Architect
Rayn replied, his voice a low rasp, "How could I ever forget?"
"Then begin. Your 'Void Scourge'
"Who are you?" Rayn demanded.
The shadowy figure receded into the darkness. "When the time is right, we shall meet face-to-face."
The fog shattered. Rayn’s consciousness snapped back into the laboratory. He looked at Benson, then at the terrified Veora, and finally at his newly awakened "wife."
"We are leaving," Rayn said. His eyes glowed a deep, baleful red, carrying a cold and terrifying promise. "The game of the Spectres is over. My game begins now.
