Interlude: Entry Number Two

This is the fourth day of our trip, and I have learned many things. First of all, nobles are jerks. All that stuff we learned in school about it being a noble's duty to protect the working class was just rubbish. They don't really care what the people are going through; they only act if the cities are being attacked or something. I guess they're afraid of losing too much manpower at once. They're a bunch of scumbags, that's what they are.

Furthermore, everyone in this world seems very dependent on magic. They use it for everything, from simple tasks like cooking to more complex things like construction, but not everyone is taught how to use it. This means that those who can't use magic end up relying on those who can, since the technology here is very archaic.

My fighting style seems to be nonexistent in this world. In fact, the only things these people know how to talk about are swordsmanship and magic, and they still haven't told me why they "summoned" me here. Honestly, it doesn't make any sense. If my knowledge is so futile here, then why the hell did they call me in the first place?

Anyway, I need to understand how this "mana" thing works. From what I've understood so far, it's... well, actually, I haven't understood a damn thing. The way they talk about it, it sounds like they use their own body's strength to generate energy and then turn that into their spells, but that doesn't make any sense! How are you supposed to use your body to generate something like a fireball or an ice spear?

I could even ask that Larry for help, but I refuse to give that jerk the satisfaction. I'll figure out how to do it and rub it in his snobbish face.

But I guess it would be unfair to say that all nobles are like that. After all, Peter and Helena are also from noble families. Even so, they give me much more of a simple person's vibe than people from rich families. Maybe because they are servants to families with a higher title of nobility?

I tried to find out a little more about them. Since they didn't quite understand what I meant when I asked who they were, I decided to be a little more... pragmatic.

  •   Personality: Pragmatic, methodical. Values logistical order above all else. He is the most diplomatic of everyone I've had contact with so far... with the exception of Larry perhaps, but that noble is a jerk...

  •

  •   Background: Hails from a lineage of ancient Retainers (highly trusted servants); his father is a Marquis. Despite his young age for his position, his family traditionally serves great families for generations. He accepted the Bond with House Kane, serving as Larry's personal assistant and Logistics Master for Ethan's entourage.

  •   Current Status: Chief Servant to Ethan Martins. Responsible for ensuring the comfort, safety, and organization of the entire journey.

  •   Magical Aptitude: Simple, utilitarian, and support magic (Comfort, Cooling, Warming, and Maintenance spells). In addition to communication spells, a special type of magic called 'Linked Delivery'—apparently, he can send messages instantly to places he has been before, but it only works with a specific type of paper, and the ink on the letter must have been infused with his mana... pretty cool if you ask me...

  •

  •   Personality: Shy and somewhat anxious, she worries a lot about doing an excellent job, even if she ends up making a few mistakes by worrying too much about not making mistakes.

  •

  •   Background: I couldn't quite understand her life. From what I gathered, she is the second daughter of a Baron, but not the eldest of the women. It's strange how they count their children... even so, why is she so insecure if she is of noble lineage?

  •

  •   Current Status: From what I understand, she recently became part of Larry's staff. She was selected to be my personal maid, so she must have been trained to be the 'summoned one's' maid regardless of who it was? These people are really strange...

  •

  •   Magical Aptitude: She can use magic at its basic level. She says she was trained to use it for all types of domestic tasks: washing, ironing, cleaning, cooking, and other things, but she can't really use magic to defend herself or anything like that. Honestly, just being able to use magic makes anyone on Earth envious...

I need to get data from the others later, even that arrogant Larry, but that'll have to wait. Garnold just informed us that we are going to take a break for lunch here in the mountains before the rain catches us. I hope the food is good...
