Chapter Six

The years passed, and Esther had many different adventures with Lady before settling down and giving birth to children. Then her children gave birth to children, and their children gave birth to children. Into the modern age Esther's descendant is a thirty-two year old woman named Heather with long brown hair and blue eyes. She had given birth to a daughter named Rose who had a streak of blonde hair and green eyes. Looking like her dad who abandoned them after he learned Heather was with child.

Lady lived with Heather and Rose in Topeka, Kansas. She was sat in the living room with a good book while Heather was trying to calm down her infant child who would not stop crying. Heather did everything she could think of. From feeding her, playing with her, and making funny faces, but nothing seemed to work. When Heather approached Lady, Lady lowered her book and stood up.

“Let me see the child,” said Lady.

Heather, looking desperate, handed Rose over to Lady and almost instantly Rose ceased crying and began to coo in Lady's arms as Lady poked her nose and made soothing sounds towards Rose. Heather frowned as it seemed so easy for Lady to do this and not her.

“My baby hates me,” said Heather.

“Don't say such a thing,” replied Lady. “A baby is incapable of hate.”

“Then why does she cry in my arms and laugh in yours?” asked Heather.

“She feels safe in my arms,” answered Lady. “Your child wants to know you will keep her safe from harm.”

“Of course I would,” said Heather. “I would die for her.”

“Don't tell me that, tell her,” replied Lady handing Rose back to Heather.

Heather held Rose gently in her arms and kissed her forehead. “I would never let anyone hurt you,” said Heather.

“See?” questioned Lady. “It's all better now.”

Lady went back to her sofa and resumed reading her book while Heather sat down on the couch next to her.

“What are you reading?” asked Heather.

“A Story of Masculinity,” answered Lady.

“I didn't think you were into that kind of thing,” said Heather.

“I'm attracted to masculinity in a man just like any other woman,” explained Lady. “I like to know what makes them tick.”

“If they're so masculine and strong why do they run away when a child is added to the picture?” asked Heather.

“Not every man runs,” replied Lady.

“I'm sure the men back in your day were honorable and loyal,” said Heather.

“Man has always been capable of great goods, and great evils,” said Lady.

“Were you ever married?” questioned Heather.

  “No,” answered Lady.

“Did you ever want to be?” questioned Heather.

“I wanted a man in my life, yes,” answered Lady. “I even had a man in mind, but he betrayed me.”

“What did he do?” asked Heather.

“He ordered my execution,” answered Lady.

After that Heather felt awkward. “Oh. I see.”

“It was so long ago,” began Lady, “who can harbor a grudge for that long?”

“I know some people,” said Heather.

Lady merely chuckled as Heather stood up and was planning on putting Rose to bed. But not before she asked Lady one last question.

“Do you think I'll ever find love?” asked Heather.

“My dear sweet child, I believe you will find love and you'll find it well.”

To that Heather only smiled as she went upstairs to put Rose to bed and Lady went back to reading her book.
