Chapter 1: The Draw

  ---

  The light was everywhere.

Aarav tried to blink, but there was no body here—no eyes to close, no hands to raise, no heart to hammer against his chest. Just awareness, floating in an infinity of white that stretched in every direction without end.

  Am I dead?

The thought came slowly, drifting through his consciousness like fog through valley trees. He grasped at memories, anchors in this sea of nothing.

Vayuna. His apartment on the forty-seventh level. The soft blue glow of his data-screens casting long shadows across the room. Three displays side by side, each filled with cascading code—his passion project, the evolutionary algorithm he'd been building in secret for two years. His mother's voice from the kitchen, calling him for the evening meal. His father's heavy footsteps in the hallway. His sister Mira's laughter as she teased him about working too hard.

Then the sky had torn open.

Not ripped. Not broken. Torn, like fabric giving way under impossible pressure. A wound in reality itself, bleeding light and sound and something else—something that pulled at the very core of his being.

  And then nothing.

  Until now.

  WELCOME, SUMMONED ONE.

The voice was not sound. It was understanding, poured directly into his consciousness like water into a cup. Ancient. Vast. Terrifying in its impersonality.

YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN. YOUR WORLD IS ONE OF BILLIONS. YOUR LIFE IS ONE OF TRILLIONS. YOU WILL NOW RECEIVE PURPOSE.

Aarav tried to speak, to ask questions, to demand answers. But he had no mouth, no voice, no body. Only thought.

Chosen for what? Purpose for what? Where is my family?

The voice did not answer. Instead, images flooded him—not shown to his eyes, but implanted directly into his awareness.

A world. Seven continents, each vaster than all of Orion's landmasses combined. Oceans that would take lifetimes to cross. Mountains that pierced the sky itself.

Creatures that defied imagination: dragons whose wings blotted out the sun, their scales gleaming like molten gold. Forests that walked on roots like ancient legs, leaving trails of blooming flowers in their wake. Mountains that breathed, their peaks rising and falling with the rhythm of some immense, sleeping life.

And beyond it all—beyond the world, beyond the stars, beyond the very fabric of existence—a void. And in that void, things. Ships made of consumed realities. Armies that marched through nothing. Eyes like dying stars, watching. Waiting. Hungry.

  AETHEL DIES.

The name crashed into him. Aethel. This world.

  THE COSMIC DEVOURERS COME.

The images shifted. Worlds crumbling. Civilizations screaming. Gods falling, their divine light extinguished like candles in a hurricane. And the Devourers—twelve noble houses, twelve flavors of annihilation—feasting on the remains.

THEY HAVE CONSUMED A THOUSAND WORLDS. THEY HUNGER FOR THE THOUSAND AND FIRST.

Aarav's thought-voice, when it came, was steadier than he felt. And what are we? What am I?

YOU ARE THE SUMMONED. THE LORDS. EIGHT POINT FOUR BILLION SOULS, PLUCKED FROM YOUR WORLDS, GIVEN NEW PURPOSE.

YOU WILL RECEIVE TERRITORY. YOU WILL RECEIVE PEOPLE. YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER.

  YOU WILL FIGHT.

The last word echoed, not once but a thousand times, until it faded into the endless white.

  YOU WILL DRAW YOUR TALENT.

The white light before him condensed. Swirled. Became a pillar of blazing gold that stretched from somewhere beneath his awareness to somewhere far above it. Within the pillar, he sensed infinite possibilities—strength, speed, magic, command, creation. All of them waiting. All of them watching.

  REACH. DRAW. BECOME.

  Aarav reached.

He had no hands, but he reached, his awareness extending toward the pillar like a drowning man grasping for surface. The moment his consciousness touched the gold light—

  Everything changed.

  The pillar screamed.

Gold light turned to black, then white, then colors that had no names—hues that should not exist, that hurt to perceive, that opened doors in his mind he hadn't known were there. Cracks spread through the pillar like lightning frozen in crystal, each fracture releasing something ancient, something vast, something that had been waiting.

Somewhere, in a place beyond places, he felt rather than heard billions of voices cry out in confusion. Billions of Systems, all glitching for a fraction of a second. Billions of Lords, all feeling something wrong in the fabric of their awakening.

And in his consciousness, something bloomed.

It was not a talent. It was not a gift. It was a return—a piece of something ancient, something that had been waiting since before the first universe existed, for a mind that could understand it.

  The pillar shattered.

  The white void shattered.

  Aarav fell.

  ---

He fell through colors and sounds and sensations that had no names. Through the screams of dying stars and the laughter of newborn gods. Through the silence between heartbeats and the thunder of creation's first moment.

  And then—

  He gasped.

Air. Real air, cold and sharp, filled his lungs for the first time in what felt like eternity. Ground. Real ground, hard and rocky, pressed against his back. He could feel every pebble, every crack, every tiny imperfection in the stone beneath him.

  He opened his eyes.

Gray sky. Heavy with snow clouds, the kind that promised a brutal winter. Mountains in the distance, their peaks lost in the gloom. And around him—

A valley. But not a prosperous one. A valley of ruin.

Broken walls. Crumbling huts. Fields gone to weed. And people—thin, desperate people—staring at him from doorways with eyes that held equal measures of hope and fear.

A man knelt at his side, weathered face creased with lines that spoke of decades of hard living. He wore battered leather armor, patched in a dozen places, and carried a rusted sword that looked like it would break in the first real fight.

"Lord," the man said, his voice rough with emotion. "You've come. The World Will promised a Lord would come."

Aarav sat up slowly, his body responding with the familiar ache of muscles that had been still too long. He stared at his hands—his hands, solid and real—and tried to process.

"I'm Aarav. Of Orion. What is this place? What happened?"

The man's face flickered with confusion. "You don't know, Lord? You were Summoned. Like the others. The World Will brought you here to save us. To save Aethel."

Aethel. The name from the vision.

  "The Devourers," Aarav whispered.

The man's face went pale. "You... you know of them?"

They have consumed a thousand worlds. The words echoed in his memory. They hunger for the thousand and first.

"I saw," Aarav said quietly. "In the white place. I saw them."

The man bowed his head. "Then you know why you're here, Lord. The Devourers come. The gods cannot stop them alone. So the World Will brought you. Brought all of you. Eight billion Lords, they say. Eight billion saviors."

Aarav looked around the valley again. At the broken walls. The starving people. The howling in the distance that sounded like nothing he'd ever heard on Orion.

"And we start here." It wasn't a question.

"All Lords start with territory, Lord. This is yours. The Untamed Valley. It's... it's not much."

  No. It wasn't.

Aarav stared at the interface. A Heroic Summoning Circle. Every Lord had one.

"What is this?" he asked, pointing to where the text described it.

The man—Varen, Aarav would learn his name soon—followed his gesture. "Ah, the summoning circle, Lord. Every territory has one. It calls heroes from across Aethel—warriors, mages, commanders—to serve their Lord. But it's a gamble. You never know who you'll get."

"A gamble we need to take." Aarav was already moving toward the circle's location. "Show me."

  ---

The Heroic Summoning Circle stood at the valley's center—a simple arrangement of standing stones, carved with symbols that glowed faintly even in daylight. It was old, older than the huts, older than the wall. It had been waiting.

"Everyone step back," Aarav ordered. "I don't know what's coming."

The villagers retreated, leaving him alone at the circle.

He placed his hand on the central stone.

  [ AETHEL - INITIATE SUMMONING? Y/N ]

  Yes.

The stones blazed with light—blue, then white, then gold. Power surged through the circle, through Aarav, through the very ground beneath them. The air crackled. The sky darkened.

And then, with a thunderclap that shook the valley, something appeared in the circle's center.

  A woman.

She was tall, taller than any of the villagers, with skin the color of weathered oak and eyes that held the wisdom of centuries. pointed ears marked her as half-elven, and the bow on her back seemed to hum with barely contained energy. She wore leather armor that had seen battle, and at her hip hung a sword that looked anything but ceremonial.

She looked at Aarav. Looked at the valley. Looked at the starving villagers.

Then she laughed—a rich, warm sound that seemed out of place in this valley of despair.

"Well," she said, her voice carrying an accent Aarav couldn't place, "this is not what I expected when the circle called."

Aarav stared at the information. C-rank. Epic. One percent chance.

"I'm Aarav," he said, finding his voice. "Lord of this territory. Welcome to... well, welcome to what we have."

Elara's eyes swept the valley again, taking in the broken walls, the starving people, the desperate hope on every face. "You have very little, Lord Aarav."

  "I know."

"And yet you summoned me. Took the gamble." She studied him with those ancient eyes. "Most Lords would save their first summoning for when they had more to offer. Better food, better shelter, better chance of impressing whoever arrived."

"I didn't know I had a choice." Aarav met her gaze steadily. "But I don't regret it. We need help. You're here. Whatever you need—within reason—I'll provide."

Elara was silent for a long moment. Then she smiled—a real smile, not the mocking one from before.

"You're either very brave or very stupid. I haven't decided which yet." She stepped out of the circle and looked at the villagers, at the children peeking from behind huts, at the old dog watching with cloudy eyes. "But you care about them. I can see that. And that matters."

  She extended her hand.

"I'll stay. For now. Show me what you're working with, Lord Aarav. Let's see if we can keep these people alive."

  ---

  The survey took two hours.

Aarav walked through every hut, met every villager, catalogued every resource. Varen walked beside him, providing names and histories. Elara followed silently, observing, assessing, occasionally asking sharp questions that showed she understood far more than she let on.

As the sun began to set, Aarav stood at the damaged palisade with Varen and Elara, watching the eastern tree line where the howling came from.

"Twelve days of food," Elara said quietly. "Broken walls. Almost no weapons. And winter coming." She looked at Aarav. "What's your plan?"

Aarav didn't answer immediately. He was reading something else in his interface.

Aarav stared at the numbers. Seraphina already had angels. Drakos was already transforming. Elara controlled elementals.

And he had 87 starving people, a broken wall, and an epic-rank ranger who hadn't decided if she trusted him yet.

"Lord?" Varen's voice broke through. "You've gone very still."

Aarav closed the interface and turned to face them.

"Twelve days of food," he said. "Broken walls. Almost no weapons." He looked at Elara. "But we have an epic-rank ranger, an iron vein we haven't tapped, and a talent that no one else has."

He pointed to the wheat field.

"Tomorrow, I evolve that field. The day after, we start on the wall. The day after that, we mine iron. One step at a time."

Elara raised an eyebrow. "Evolve the field? What kind of talent do you have, Lord Aarav?"

Aarav smiled—a thin, determined expression that didn't reach his eyes.

"The kind that's going to keep us alive."

  ---

The villagers gathered as the sun set, sharing what little food they had. Elara sat apart, watching, learning. The children stared at her with wide eyes. The old dog—still unnamed—lay at Aarav's feet, her cloudy eyes fixed on the tree line.
