Chapter 9

  William trey, Water Elemental

  29 days later.

“So you're hosting a transfer? Sounds fun.” I say, tossing a sphere of ice up and down as we walk through the forest together.

“Yeah, Mom's excited about it.” Selena says, stretching her arms before letting out a satisfied sigh. “I'm feeling pretty meh about it. She's from the U.S., I hear, which is cool I guess.”

“What's her name?” I ask, throwing the ball at a tree. The ice ball shatters, then the ice shads float up into the air and shoot at my top speed I can make them go into the bark. 85 miles per hour, I measured. the tree doesn't like those apples, I see. Selena barely notices it. Practicing while we talk has just become a thing at this point. My range has reached just about 90 meters in all directions, and I can form complex shapes out of fluids now. I still can't create water, though.

“Lillian, I think. I wonder if she minds being called lily.” Selena muses, scooping up a leaf from the ground to twirl around her fingers. The trees are finally starting to let their leaves fall. Halloween is in only three days, and I haven't decided what to dress up as yet.

“She’d probably be fine with it.” I shrug. “I mean, would you dislike being called Lily if your name was Lillian?”

“I guess not.” She humms. “She'll be here the day before Halloween, I hear.”

“Alright, sounds good.” I nod. “So, mind if I come to meet her then?”

“Yeah, sure. I'll bring her over to your place after showing her around mine. Maybe she'll like Ava.” Selena agrees, then pauses at a tree trunk. “we sat on this thing then first testing your powers together.” She says, then pauses, looking over to the tree I'd hit back then. “Think you can take that thing down?”

I chuckle at the thought. “Definitely.” I say, then tug on the water in the tree, The tree withers and cracks as all liquid is pulled out of it. Then that liquid compresses itself down to half its size before letting itself uncompress is sharp bursts of needle-thin water, piercing through the tree like it's nothing. Within 2 seconds, the tree is dead, destroyed, and turned to nothing.

“You have absolutely no idea how terrifying that is.” Selena mutters, walking up to the trunk and kicking at the dry dust.

“I'm pretty sure I could cut through metal like nothing with the kind of water pressure I can build up using compression.” I say, grinning. “Back 2 months ago, that would have taken a lot out of me. But now? That barely drained my mental energy at all.”“You think you could make a tsunami happen?” She asks me, making me think it over. I eventually shake my head.

“No, not for another few months, I don't think.”

“Only needing a few months to make a tsunami is terrifying.” She comments, raising an eyebrow.

“Imagine what the earth or air elementals could do though.” I point out. “Hurricanes, earthquakes and tornados. Maybe the electric elemental can just smite people.”

“At least we know what all the elementals are because of the vote.”

“Right, the vote…” I sit down on the log. “It happens tomorrow.” “Yeah, it does.” She agrees. “Who'd you vote for if you could get a name?” “Mind elemental.” I say immediately. “I want nothing in my head, thank you very much.” “Yeah, I'd probably vote the same.” She agrees, sinking into her chair. “That fire elemental. I think he's coming our way.” “You think?” I sigh. “Yeah, I heard that the fire stopped spreading recently, and the people seen in the flames vanished.” “People?” She asks, confused.“Yeah, from the pictures taken, there appeared to be a person following Tory. Perhaps an accomplice?”

“Or a hostage.” She supplies. “I can't imagine many people willingly working with a mass arsonist. I think murder is on the list too, after him burning down jasper and a few other small towns. The fire naturally is going towards banff and Edmonton as well, though it hasn't reached either.” “firefighters are getting stretched thin, I heard.” I comment, nodding. “It's a shame, all of that.”“Agreed.” She nods. “Let's just hope he doesn't hit Jakobe.”

I would have frowned, were I not frozen in time as I looked through the options, and what was new. Firstly, the fire elemental had his name listed now. Helpful for anyone who forgets, I suppose. There's a problem, though. One that would affect who I vote for. Is it their current location, or will it be the location they started, or will it always tell us their location?

I sigh, thinking for a while before eventually realizing that I'm just procrastinating. I just select the mind elemental to get it over with. Seems nobody else wants a mind-fuck, so the majority agrees with me.

[Location] of [Mind] elemental has been selected. Now displaying [Location] of [Mind] elemental:

  Hong kong, china

Information slips into my mind like a sheet of paper, and I feel a snapshot of a location. A moment in time frozen to reveal the last place the mind elemental was before time unfroze. That there is an elemental in china is unsurprising, given their high population. This person likely isn't the only one. I guess I'm not going to China, though. Not that it had ever crossed my mind, but you know what I mean. Honestly, there being 2 elementals in a country with such a low population like Canada is quite improbable, at least if it's going based off of population density and not country size or something. For all I know it could have picked based off of hair color or the largest apple we've ever eaten.

As time resumes, I continue my walk to school. I've noticed more people walking than driving their cars on the voting day. Probably due to the disorientation experienced from the time stop. I experience no such disorientation, but you know. I smile when my phone buzzes, having a solid guess who it may be. However, I'm surprised when I see it's not my mom or sister. Apparently, during the still moment when I got my powers, Mom had tried to call me, but I hadn't noticed the call, disoriented as I was. She’d called me the time after too and I hadn;t noticed it. This time, I'd expected a call, but Selena got to me first.“So, the mind elemental is in China, huh? That's a relief.” Selena speaks through the phone. “I'd imagine that'll go horribly.”

“Imagine? There’s probably news on it going on right now.” I say, chuckling. “I'd imagine mass panic sprinkled with a little chaos, and possibly mind-controlled people. Actually, I shouldn't be chuckling, that sounds terrifying.”

“Meet after class?” She asks.“Alright, sounds good.” I nod, despite her not being able to see it, and hang up. It's a minute later that I get the call I'd expected and pick up.

“Hey Mom, I picked up.” I say, sounding a little more amused than warranted.

“You're never going to China, you hear me?” She says immediately, and I can't help but burst out laughing.

“Fine by me.” I say after a while, my voice carrying a smile in it.

“I think there was another car crash.” She says with a sigh. “I heard it from home.”“I wouldn't be surprised if someone was dumb enough to drive at this time.” I agree. “Though I’ve seen all of, like, 4 cars since I started walking.”

“Either way, be careful.” Mom stresses, and I can't help but sigh.

“I will, Mom. See you after school.”

“See you after school. Love you.”

“Love you too. Bye.”“Bye.” And with that I hang up. I put my phone back into my pocket, sliding my hands in with them as I take in a deep breath of the morning air. There might be some light snow some time soon. I wonder how winter will affect my powers, given all the water will be frozen. I've confirmed that I can certainly melt ice into water, and even into steam, which I can use to attack my enemies with. I'm mostly just hoping I'll never have to use these powers on another person. I don't want to hurt anyone. But if the fire elemental keeps his path aiming for me, I might just have to.
