Chapter 12

Miri moved as quickly as she could to avoid the wights but also not too quick to accidentally walk into traps. During her running, there were a couple of times where she nearly got caught in one of the many traps within the catacombs.

Sometimes, it was a pressure plate that shot poison darts. Sometimes, it was a pit full of spikes. Sometimes, it was a boulder rolling through a long, narrow corridor. Thankfully, due to her caution, she was able to avoid those traps by the skin of her teeth. Still didn’t make it any less tiring for her, though.

For a while, she was able to avoid both the wights and the traps, though she wasn’t able to do that for very long without tiring out as her playstyle was not built for stamina. In between the fighting, she was forced to fight a few of the wights that were coming her way. As slow as they may be, they don’t seem to stop moving, which was how they were able to eventually catch up to her in the long run.

However, fighting a couple at a time was not much of a challenge for her as her magical attacks were more than enough to handle them when push comes to shove. With the sheer number of wights in this dungeon, it was more or less a test of endurance than anything else.

Then, in the middle of fighting wights and avoiding traps, she thought of a clever idea: she could lure the wights into the traps themselves. She practically kicked herself for not having thought of this before. With the wight’s piss-poor intelligence, even their sheer numbers would be no match against this clever tactic. This was like killing two birds with one stone—or, more accurately, killing one bird with another bird, with both birds ending up dead.

And so, she set off to bait an incoming group of the wights towards one of the traps—a boulder that’s supposed to roll down an incline once you approach its path. After some careful maneuvering, she was able to lure them towards the path of the trap, allowing the boulder to roll down and slam into them like a bowling ball through a set of pins.

Next came the poison dart pressure plate, which seemed less successful than the first trap. Despite the wights’ bodies being shot with enough darts to make them look like pincushions, they continued to move as if unaffected by it. Miri theorized that since the wights were undead, their blood was probably not flowing through their veins, making poison practically ineffective against them.

As it turned out, not all her clever ideas worked out for her. Even so, it was enough to clear out a majority of the wights within the area, allowing her to navigate the dungeon more smoothly. And with that, she spotted a notification at the peripheral of her vision that indicated she had leveled up.

[Level up! You have reached level 2!]

With each level, she should be able to get 5 additional skill points which she could allocate to any one of her stats. After some thought, she distributed her additional stat points in accordance to her preference.

  Fire: 10

  Air: 5

  Water: 5

  Earth: 5

  Spirit: 5

Afterwards, she began doing some scavenging, trying to loot some stuff off the wight’s bodies. What she found was not much worthy of note—some rusted weapons and armor, a couple gold coins, and an occasional limewort mushroom, a common alchemical ingredient usually found in caves and such. Miri ended up abandoning all of the rusted weapons and armor due to their heavy weight as their low relative value while only keeping the coins and limewort mushrooms.

After some more exploring, she finally managed to reach a large door decorated with an array of ornamental runes. Miri’s gaming instincts kicked in, immediately recognizing it to be a door that’d likely lead to the boss at the end of a dungeon as well as the location where the prized rune was being kept. After checking to make sure all her spells and equipment were in order, as well as drinking a mana potion to replenish her mostly depleted mana just in case, she pushed the door open and advanced onward.
