[Sara POV] Year 5, Day 202
Afternoon. Dominos, the poisoner lady, mentioned tourist trips again. S-rank haunts. Expensive. Dangerous. Interesting.
Sara had idea.
"Friend wants tour? Sara can arrange. Snakes will escort. Sara will watch from distance. Give friend space. Let friend experience properly."
Dominos looked uncertain. "Tour? Here? In the haunt?"
"Yes. Safe tour. Snakes protect. Sara watches. Friend sees sights. Monster hunting. Evolutionary combat. Everything tourists pay fortunes for. Friend gets free. Special service."
Long pause. Fear fighting curiosity. Curiosity winning.
"Okay. Let's try."
Largest snake became mount. Sara pulled a snake saddle from Item Box—had it stored somewhere. Didn't remember where from or why. Just had it.
[Sara collects many things. Not always remember origins. Just: might be useful someday. This time was right.]
Mounting the saddle took effort. Sara and Dominos didn't know how to do it properly. Wrong position first. Then wrong straps. Trial and error. Multiple attempts. Finally figured it out together. Got it secured.
Dominos rode uncomfortably at first but managed. Holding on. Trusting the equipment. Trusting the process.
Fifteen snakes total for escort. Security force. Protection detail operating professionally.
Sara kept distance. Flying above. Watching. Not hovering. Giving space. Let friend have experience. Let friend build confidence.
They moved through S-rank haunt. Systematic tour. Showing interesting locations. Avoiding most dangerous areas but still impressive sights.
Monster battles visible. Evolutionary combat. Natural selection happening real-time. Death and violence and survival all mixed together.
Dominos watched everything. Fear still present, but fascination too. Understanding the ecosystem. Seeing how monsters lived, competed, killed.
[Friend is not screaming. Not panicking. Not begging to go back. Actually watching. Actually learning. Sara made good choice. This is working.]
Hours passed with multiple stops at different locations. Different sights. Snakes escorting professionally. No threats approaching. Nothing dangerous coming close. Security perfect.
Sara felt it. Friend was getting comfortable. Actually comfortable. Fear diminishing. Confidence building. Trust forming with snakes. With situation. With everything.
[This is what Sara wanted. Friend comfortable in Sara's home. Friend safe with Sara's people. Friend actually enjoying visit. Success.]
They stopped at a clearing. Rest point. Snakes settling. Dominos dismounting. Stretching. Comfortable enough to relax now.
Then Sara sensed them. Trouble approaching. Life signatures. Approaching fast.
Adventurer party. Professional hunters.
Seven of them. All strong. S-rank power levels—lower end, but still S-ranks. Numbers and coordination made them dangerous. Professional party moving with purpose. Experienced hunters.
They entered the clearing. Saw Dominos. Saw snakes surrounding her.
Sara understood immediately. [Seen enough hunters. Seen this behavior before. They switched targets. Not hunting snakes anymore. Hunting controller. Control the controller. Standard tactic.]
Their leader—lion beastkin, female, scarred—pointed at Dominos. Orders came sharp and direct.
"Controller. Capture before she commands. Fast. All directions. Now."
They moved instantly—coordinated, professional, all directions at once. Surrounding. Converging. Overwhelming speed. S-rank hunters executing their capture plan with practiced efficiency.
So fast even Sara couldn't react instantly. [Too fast. Too coordinated. Too professional. Sara miscalculated. Should have stayed closer. Should have protected better.]
First one reached Dominos. Tiger male. Large. Fast. Restraint grab.
The moment he touched her—
His hand started dying. Literally dying. Flesh necrotizing. Turning black. Spreading up arm. Half his body affected in seconds. Poison magic. Instant. Automatic. Defensive response.
Death poison cloud erupted around Dominos. Thick. Visible. Lethal to anyone within range.
The tiger collapsed. Screaming. Dying. Half-dead already from single touch.
[Oh. Friend is not helpless civilian. Friend is apex poison user. Master-level. Centuries of assassin guild survival showing. Sara forgot that. Sara underestimated friend.]
Other adventurers reacted fast, trying to coordinate defense and save the situation.
But snakes responded. All fifteen. Attack mode. Protecting designated target. Following hierarchy. Dominos was Sara's friend. Sara's second. Anyone attacking her died.
Ice spear launched. One of the snakes. Massive projectile. Magic attack. Fast. Precise.
Hit bear beastkin straight through the chest. Dead instantly. Body collapsed. No scream. No chance.
[They all die now. Sara knows this. Snakes in kill mode. Protecting friend. All adventurers will be dead in seconds.]
But then Dominos's voice cut through. Sharp. Commanding. "Capture! Don't kill! Take them alive!"
Snakes adapted. Immediately. Switched tactics.
Eyes started blinking. All fifteen snakes. Synchronized. Petrification gaze activating. Ancient ability. Racial power. Instant effect.
Wounded tiger—the one who'd touched Dominos—turned to stone instantly. Body froze mid-scream. Stone statue. Perfectly preserved.
Others tried to counter. Shields raised. Eyes closed. Defensive magic activating. S-rank experience showing.
But every time one went down, more pressure split to the others. Snakes focused and coordinated, overwhelming their defenses one by one.
Domino effect. Inevitable. Unstoppable.
Approximately fifteen seconds. That's all it took. Entire party was stone statues. Six remaining adventurers. All petrified. All captured. All helpless.
[Very efficient. Sara is impressed. Snakes work well together with excellent coordination and capture technique.]
Dominos approached the stone statues with professional calm. Centuries of assassin work showing clearly.
She looked at snakes. Question forming. "Can you undo this? When needed?"
All fifteen snakes nodded. Yes. Could undo it. Petrification was reversible.
"Good." Dominos pulled something from her ring storage—spatial item, expensive and discrete.
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
A bottle. Small. Red liquid inside, glowing slightly.
Sara noticed immediately—all fifteen snakes' eyes tracked the bottle with intense focus.
Dominos noticed too. Made a guilty face and bowed to the snakes respectfully. "Can I?"
The snakes nodded, granting permission.
Sara had no idea what that was. [What bottle? Why snakes care? Why Dominos asks permission? Strange interaction. Sara confused.]
Dominos drank the entire bottle fast, then approached the stone statues.
Her hands started outputting something—pinkish foam, strange substance emerging from her palms. Coating the adventurers, covering them completely with professional precision.
She drank two more bottles while working. Same red liquid. Continuous consumption. Fueling something. Powering something.
Once all six adventurers were covered completely in pinkish foam, Dominos looked at snakes. "Undo now. Please."
Snakes' eyes blinked. More focused. More purposeful. Petrification reversing. Ancient ability working backwards.
Stone became flesh. All six statues. Simultaneously. Bodies returning. Life returning.
And they collapsed immediately. Like jelly. No strength. No structure. Bodies just falling. Helpless.
Wounded tiger—the one Dominos had touched initially—was healing visibly and fast. Flesh regenerating. Poison reversing. Body restoring itself.
[Interesting. Foam heals? Dominos saved him? Why? Sara confused. Thought this was revenge. Why heal?]
Dominos approached the collapsed adventurers. Back to flesh now. Just not very mobile. Bodies like jelly. Helpless.
Interrogation time. Questions needed. Answers demanded.
"Why did you attack?" she asked. Direct. Clear. "Out of nowhere? No warning?"
Sara wanted to know too. [Yes. Why? Strange decision. Bad tactics. Why attack someone who commands S-rank monsters?]
Leader spoke. Very slowly. Slurred. Body not responding properly. Jelly-like. Words difficult. "Chance... too good..."
Pause. Breathing hard. Struggling to form words.
"Those mana snakes... every adventurer guild... warnings... after stampede... Marchrest... thirty-eight thousand dead..." Gasping. Difficult speech. "And now... someone controls them... getting control of you... your secrets... chance of century... make us all rich..."
Small pause. More struggling.
"I know... who you are... seen you... Central assassin guild boot... near non-stop... last century..." Slurred. Slow. "Everyone thinks... old hooker... using boot neutrality... enjoying retirement..."
Another pause. More effort.
"But surprise... you keep valuable secrets... if we captured you... with your background... simple to register... criminal slave... extract secrets... or sell... highest bidder..."
Sara thought about that. [Well. Friend WAS using guild boot neutrality. WAS kind of retiring there. They were not wrong about that.]
Sara knew the rule. Assassin guild boot members couldn't be active in business. Had to be mostly neutral. Guild usually protected those members. Somewhat. Boot usually had two types—green recruits just starting, or old specialists enjoying retirement. Safe neutral ground. Protected status.
[Friend was old specialist. Using protection. Using neutrality. Smart cover. Professional hiding. Sara approves.]
Leader struggled. Still hoping maybe. "Perhaps... still make... deal?"
Dominos drank one more bottle. Eleventh. Then answered simply.
"I don't think it's possible. This foam on you? It's The Withering."
Sara felt something. Recognition. Understanding what that name meant.
The Withering. Legendary torture spell. Famous. Infamous.
[Oh. Dominos is more badass than Sara thought. Much more badass. Everyone heard about The Withering. One of three worst spells for torture. Legendary for wrong reasons.]
Half the adventurers went into pure panic. Visible. Immediate. Understanding exactly what that meant. What was coming. What they couldn't stop.
Other three looked confused. Didn't understand. Didn't recognize the name. Didn't comprehend why their companions were panicking so hard.
Sara was interested though. Actually interested. [Heard about The Withering. Never seen it. Famous spell. Legendary torture. Sara wants to watch. Learn. Understand.]
Dominos looked at three confused adventurers. Something like pity showing. "I'll help you understand what that means."
She drank one more bottle. Twelfth. Keeping power flowing. Maintaining control.
Then explained clinically, like a teacher delivering a lesson.
"The Withering is known as one of worst spells for torture. Even in assassin guild, torturers sometimes look strange—so I kept the fact I know how to cast it hidden from public. Only selected know. Nice bonus whenever called out for jobs."
Pause. More drinking. Thirteenth bottle.
"This spell is hard to use. Needs subjects to be strong. B-rank adventurers? Maybe fifty percent chance of activation. Usually need A-rank or higher. Even in Republic, that's not that many qualified targets. Makes it rare. Makes it valuable. Makes it feared."
She gestured at the foam. At their bodies.
"Spell basically starts competition in your body. Healing versus destroying. Runs until all energy consumed. Mana. Elixir reserves. Life force. Flesh. Blood. Everything. Not much left at end. Usually."
Fourteenth bottle. Fifteenth. Continuous drinking.
"Also—once this spell activates, no way to stop it. No counter. No cure. No escape. Just: runs until completion or death. Whichever comes first."
Sixteenth bottle. "See, I don't actually have much mana naturally. So need to drink lots of mana potions. Keeping spell from activating. Held back."
She looked at them. All six. "You're all quite strong. S-rank. Good reserves. When I let this go? Thirty minutes to an hour of suffering. Maybe longer. Depends on your reserves. BYE."
And she stopped. Stopped drinking. Stopped controlling. Stopped holding back.
The spell activated.
The spell activated. Fully. Completely. No stopping it now.
Bodies began changing—both healing and taking damage simultaneously. Flesh mending while flesh rotting. Bones strengthening while bones cracking. Blood replenishing while blood drying. Everything happening at once. Competing processes. Healing versus destruction. Life versus death. All mixed together. All accelerated. All overdrive.
Horror. Real horror. Even by Sara's standards. Bodies writhing. Screaming. Suffering. Unable to stop. Unable to die quickly. Just: endless competition inside their own flesh until energy depleted. Until nothing left. Until body gave up completely.
One thing Sara noticed—the leader tried to cut his own throat. Impressive willpower to manage under all this. But cut was not very deep. Clearly not much strength left. And healed instantly anyway. Just bit more damage to heal in this ongoing contest. Suicide attempt futile. Just more suffering added.
He dropped the knife. Realized the uselessness. Understood there was no escape. Only watched Sara with begging eyes. Silent plea. No words. Just: begging.
[This is gross. Very gross. Worse than most things Sara's seen. Creative torture with professional cruelty. Legendary spell living up to its reputation.]
Dominos walked away to a professional distance. Work completed. Just waiting now for the spell to finish. For bodies to deplete. For suffering to conclude naturally.
The snakes were watching. All fifteen. Assessing what Dominos had done. How she'd handled the threat. How she'd punished the attackers.
Then movement. Subtle and respectful. All fifteen snakes bowed, heads lowering in recognition.
[Snakes respect friend now. Friend proved dangerous. Friend proved cruel. Friend proved worthy. Monster logic. Friend earned position through action. Not just given by Sara. Earned.]
[Sara sure all other snakes will know soon. These fifteen will tell rest. Even snakes not free from rumor mill. News spreads. Professional gossip. Sara's friend killed S-rank party with legendary torture spell. That's impressive story. That's respect-earning story. All 37 will know by tonight.]
Sara decided to change subject. Too much horror. Too much screaming. Too much suffering happening right there.
First question that came to mind: "Why did those adventurers call them 'mana snakes'? Sara thought these were just big S-rank snakes. Nothing that special."
Dominos answered thoughtfully, processing what she'd learned. "I also didn't know what they were. Had some doubts when they watched this drink I was using." She held up the bottle with red liquid. "Got final confirmation when the adventurers said it."
She explained, sharing her knowledge.
"While these snakes are big and tanky and can petrify—those are normal S-rank serpent abilities. Main horror comes from something else. They have second heart. Generates mana. Pure mana. Their blood is near-pure mana. Highest concentration possible in living creature."
Pause. Weight building. "Means they can cast spells endlessly. No normal mana limitations. Also have massive healing ability. Basically in any slugfest—these things are near unkillable. Unless you one-shot them, they just keep healing. Keep fighting. Keep overwhelming. Near-infinite endurance. That's what makes them actually terrifying."
She took one bottle from storage and showed Sara. Same red liquid. "This is mana snake blood. Best mana potions are made from their blood. My class makes me immune to all poisons and toxins, so I can drink it raw. They sell processed version. Actually more efficient raw—cleaning process removes some effects. Just tastes horrible."
Sara looked at snakes with new understanding. [Oh. Sara been feeding very valuable monsters. Very special monsters. Sara didn't know. Sara just thought they were big snakes. Scary snakes. But apparently legendary snakes. Rare snakes. Very valuable snakes.]
Dominos added an important clarification. "What I drink probably isn't from dead snakes though. They grow and farm mana snakes for blood. Sustainable harvest, or so I've heard."
She paused. Reconsidering what she knew. "Before today, I had no idea how that was possible. These things are S-rank. Super dangerous to contain."
She gestured at the fifteen snakes around them. "But Sara shows it IS possible. Probably some smart or strong people somewhere also worked it out. Made a farming operation. Harvesting blood sustainably. Makes a fortune, I'd imagine."
Sara processed that. [Sara accidentally made a deal with legendary monster species. Sara feeding them dragons. Sara protecting them. They protecting Sara back. Mutual arrangement. But apparently very valuable. Very rare. Sara lucked out.]
[Good snakes. Very good snakes. Sara will keep protecting them. Keep feeding them. Keep this arrangement working.]
"Let's continue tour," Dominos said. More confident now. More comfortable. "I want to see more. Want to understand this place better. Want to learn."
Sara felt happiness. Real happiness.
[Friend is comfortable now. Friend wants to continue. Friend is not leaving early. Friend is actually enjoying visit. Success. Complete success.]
They continued. Tourist trip resumed with fifteen snake escort providing security. No more interruptions. No more problems.
Friend was comfortable with Sara's world now. Comfortable with monster logic. Comfortable with hierarchy as structure. Friend had always been comfortable with violence and cruelty—centuries in assassin guild guaranteed that. But this was different kind. Monster kind. Direct. Simple. Honest in its brutality. Not the subtle poisons and hidden deaths of assassin work. Just: power, hierarchy, survival. Friend adapted well.
[Everything Sara wanted. Friend accepts Sara's world. Friend fits in Sara's world. Friend can visit again. Friend will want to visit again.]
[Good day. Very good day. Sara is very pleased.]
