The morning dawned under a thick veil of mist that clung to the leaves. The air was heavy with humidity, a sticky embrace that made every breath feel labored.
Kai woke to the constant buzzing of insects and the cries of exotic birds. He blinked several times and felt the soft weight of Lyla curled against his chest. During the night, she had pressed closer, murmuring something about the jungle’s chill though Kai knew it was just an excuse to be near him.
He sat up gently, easing her arm away. Meanwhile, Allice was already awake, keeping watch around the camp, while Roshia knelt beside the dead fire, coaxing it back to life with dry twigs she had gathered.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” Lyla murmured, opening her eyes with a lazy smile.
She stretched, her hair cascading over her shoulders.
“Did you sleep well?”
“Pretty well, considering we’re in the middle of a jungle full of beasts. And you? You looked… comfortable.”
Lyla laughed softly, sitting up and pressing a kiss to his cheek.
“I’m always comfortable when I have you with me. But we need to find a village, get some leads on that traffickers’ camp.”
Allice approached, wiping one of her daggers with a large leaf.
“I’ve scouted ahead. There’s a trail heading north that looks recently used. It might lead to a village.”
Roshia looked up, her green eyes shining with determination.
“Thank you, all of you. I know this is dangerous, but my daughter… I can’t even imagine what she’s going through.”
Kai nodded, feeling a pang of empathy. He remembered his own recovered memories, the razed village, his parents dead. That kind of pain he understood all too well.
“Don’t worry. We’ll find her. And we’ll free everyone they’re holding. Let’s break camp and get moving.”
They ate a quick breakfast of dry rations.
Kai was improving, but the jungle was an unpredictable place. He needed to level up more and help Lyla grow stronger too.
Finally, the group set off down the trail Allice had mentioned. The deeper they went, the more the jungle revealed itself as a living labyrinth, roots rising like traps, hanging vines snagging at their legs, and soft ground that could swallow a careless step.
The heat was oppressive as they walked, quickly soaking their clothes in sweat. Though Roshia wasn’t familiar with this exact area, she led surprisingly well, using her knowledge to point out poisonous plants and identify edible fruit.
“Watch that vine,” she warned, indicating one that looked harmless but released paralyzing spores.
Hours passed. The sun climbed high, turning the jungle into an oven. Kai stayed alert for threats, but even he felt overwhelmed by the constant cacophony of sounds. Then, suddenly, a roar thundered from their left, freezing the group in place.

ENEMY DETECTED
Type: Beast.
Approximate Threat Level: Rank C.
Distance: 50 meters and approaching.
“Something big is coming, very big,” Kai whispered, drawing his daggers. Allice moved to his side, Lyla prepared to chant a spell, and Roshia summoned thick layers of ice around her hands like boxing gloves.
From the undergrowth emerged an imposing creature, a black jaguar with glowing yellow eyes, its fur dappled with spots that blended perfectly into the shadows. But this was no ordinary jaguar, it could teleport short distances through darkness. Nearly three meters long, its obsidian claws gleamed.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
The jaguar roared, baring razor sharp fangs, and lunged straight at Kai, vanishing in a swirl of shadow only to reappear behind him. Kai spun on instinct and blocked the claw strike with his daggers. The force pushed him back, but thanks to his recent level ups, he held his ground.
“Burning Arrow!” he chanted. A blazing arrow materialized and shot forward, grazing the jaguar and scorching its fur, but not enough to finish it.
The beast roared in pain and teleported again, this time toward Roshia. Allice was faster. She darted in with lethal grace, driving a dagger into the jaguar’s foreleg before it could strike.
“Don’t you touch her!” she shouted, kicking off a tree to leap back and avoid the counterattack.
Lyla summoned a powerful gust of wind that slammed the jaguar into a trunk, sending leaves and branches raining down. Roshia seized the opening.
“Ice Lance!” A sharp icicle formed in her hand and flew true, piercing the jaguar’s side, but still not killing it.
Kai didn’t hesitate. He closed the distance with blinding speed, anticipating the beast’s next teleport. As it tried to vanish, he leaped onto its back and drove both daggers deep into its neck. The jaguar let out one final roar before collapsing onto the undergrowth.

Kai panted, but a proud smile spread across his face.
“Good job, everyone. That was intense, but we fought well as a team.”
Allice cleaned her dagger.
“Not bad at all for our first real fight together.”
Roshia, still trembling slightly, nodded.
“Thank you. Honestly… you guys fight incredibly well. It was almost… entertaining.”
Lyla stepped close, hugging Kai and pressing her chest against his arm.
“You’re getting stronger every day.”
Kai flushed but quickly steadied himself. Little by little, he was getting used to Lyla’s advances, and beginning to feel something stir inside him in response.
He stepped aside for a moment to allocate his points.

He felt fresh power surge through his body, and noticed Lyla seemed noticeably stronger as well.
They continued on until a wide, rushing river blocked their path.
“We need to cross it,” Allice said.
Roshia spoke up.
“I can freeze a section of the river to make a temporary bridge.”
The others exchanged glances and nodded. Roshia extended her hands, chanted a brief spell, and froze a narrow strip of the river into a solid ice path.
They crossed carefully. Minutes after they reached the other side, the bridge melted away.
At sunset, they spotted smoke rising above the treetops.
“A village,” Roshia whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
They approached cautiously. The village consisted of elevated huts built on stilts, connected by vine bridges. The inhabitants, a mix of humans, elves, and demihumans, lived in harmony with the jungle. But as they drew near, a guard with a spear barred their way.
“Outsiders. What do you want?”
Kai stepped forward, calm but firm.
“We come in peace. We’re looking for information about a traffickers’ camp. They’ve captured elves and others, including our friend’s daughter.”
The guard studied them suspiciously, but the desperation in Roshia’s eyes softened his expression. He nodded.
“Enter. Speak with the village chief. His name is Fir, a demihuman. You’ll find him in the central hut.”
Inside, the village buzzed with life, children played with balls, merchants sold exotic fruits, and a large central fire pit sent the smell of roasting meat into the air. Chief Fir welcomed them into the largest hut.
“I’ve heard of those traffickers. They operate out of the ancient ruins to the east, near the Sleeping Volcano. They have strong guards… but why should I help strangers?”
Roshia met his gaze and pleaded.
“My daughter is there. Please, any map, any guide… it would mean everything.”
He sighed.
“I’ll give you a map. But in return, I need your help with a problem. A basilisk has been attacking our patrols. Kill it, and I’ll help you.”
Kai looked at the others. They nodded.
“We accept.”
That night they ate stew made of fruit and bird meat around the fire. Later, Kai and Lyla slipped away to sit together under the stars.
“This reminds me of our old walks,” Lyla said, resting her head on his shoulder.
Kai smiled.
“Maybe… I’m starting to remember more. And I’m starting to enjoy these moments. Thank you, for bringing me back.” His hand settled gently on her thigh.
She looked surprised but said nothing, only placed her hand over his, lacing their fingers together.
At dawn they set out for the basilisk’s lair, guided by a villager. The cave was dark, filled with toxic vapors.
The battle was long and brutal. Kai absorbed a petrifying beam and redirected it. Allice severed its wings. Roshia froze its legs. Lyla blasted it back with wind. Finally, Kai finished it with a Burning Arrow the creature could no longer withstand.

Back in the village, Chief Fir handed them a detailed map.
“The camp is heavily fortified. I suggest infiltrating at night. Thank you for your help. You’re welcome here anytime.”
He smiled warmly.
