Chapter 12 Small Snack

"Calling Alpha carryall, initiate docking sequence."

Leto hovered the ornithopter in the air, meanwhile Kynes scanned the area to find the incoming carryall.

  "Where is it?" Leto asked.

"I see it!" Kynes said as in the distance the carryall appeared to be flying towards the harvester.

Jack took a deep breath in, 'This is going to be very tight, hopefully the harvester can also be saved' he thought to himself.

"Approaching harvester, preparing to dock" The voice on the other end said as the carryall quickly flew over and hovered over the harvester.

"reducing altitudes," The operator on the other said as the carryall lowered and released the anchors.

But one of the Anchors failed to attach to the harvester.

  “What’s happening?” Leto asked.

"Anchor A4 attachment failed!" the operator exclaimed as an alarm sounded.

The harvester groaned as it came to a stop beneath the carryall.

One anchor hung uselessly in the air.

"Hydraulics malfunction, I repeat, Anchor A4 is dead!" The operator said.

  "Shit" Kynes muttered.

"Carryall unable to receive, unable to lift without that anchor!" The operator exclaimed, his tone filled with panic.

"All call, All call, any carryall in the sector, please respond!" The operator exclaimed.

"Spotter give us an update," Kynes said as she monitored the sandworm approaching using her binoculars.

"Worm is in intercept position to harvester contact estimate is 7 minutes."

"Carryall Delta, T minus 5 minutes away." Another voice came through.

“That’s cutting it close,” Jack muttered.

'I should have faked the vision earlier, we would have more time...' Jack thought to himself with a frown.

"How many men on the harvester?" Leto asked.

  "Crew of 21," Kynes replied.

"Our ships can take 6 each."

"That's still 3 less," Kynes said.

"We will find a way," Leto said.

"Evacuate all crew members, Carryall Delta, this is Duke Leto, make your way to the harvester with haste."

  Leto cut the engines.

The ornithopter dropped like a stone.

About 10 meters away from hitting the ground, he switched on the engine and the wings rapidly flapped slowing the descent. By the time they were 2 meters above the ground, the ornithopter smoothly landed.

"Move!" Leto shouted as the ramp to the ornithopter lowered, Gurney and Jack immediately rushed out.

The other two ornithopters quickly landed nearby and soldiers disembarked to help the crew members board quickly.

The harvester had stopped at this moment, and crew members had begun rushing out.

Sand blew cause of the heavy winds limiting visibility.

Gurney jumped into action, and the soldiers followed behind him.

"Dump out all unnecessary items within the ornithopters," Leto told the pilots of the other ornithopters.

He needed to fit three more people within the Ornithopters, and this was the only way.

"Carryall Delta, how far you?" Leto spoke into the microphone.

  "T minus 2 minutes"

Kynes was active as she spoke as well. "How far is the worm?" she asked, disregarding any extra words and radio contact mannerisms.

"The worm is 4 minutes away" the operator quickly responded.

"This is going to cut it very close," Jack muttered as he glanced at the sand in his hand, red spice glistening within it.

"So this is the fuel that runs the whole universe," Jack muttered as he scuffled the sand in his palms for a moment.

Glancing towards the sky, although he couldn't see clearly, A carryall was hastilly approaching the harvester.

Putting his mask on to ensure no spice enters his body, he moved to the harvester where a group of three crewmen burst from the harvester ramp, stumbling through the sand.

"Come here!" Jack shouted waving towards them.

They ran with all their might, following Jack who quickly led them to the Ornithopter.

The sand violently lashed out as the Carryall appeared over the harvester, but Jack leading the three men arrived at the Ornithopter and loaded them in.

"All crew members recovered!" Gurney shouted as he rushed into the ornithopter.

"Fallback!" As the gates to the ornithopter closed, the blades vibrated with ferocity cutting through the sand, causing sparks in their range forming an almost halo-like effect.

Lifting off the ground, the ships flew back.

"Spotter, how far is it?" Kynes asked.

"T minus 2 minutes from impact." The operator responded with a little more calm now.

Risining in altitude, everybody got a better view of the carryall as it sent out its anchors.

Everybody watched with concentration as the anchors clamped onto the harvester and lifted it into the sky.

"Retrieval successful." The operator's voice came through the other end.

Duke Leto let out a heavy sigh.

Jack's tense back relaxed, 'We saved the people, and this time, we didn't lose the very first batch of spice and a harvester,' Jack thought to himself as he relaxed.

"Good job," Leto said with relief tinged in his voice before ending communications.

The ornithopter climbed at higher altitudes, moving at a level pace with the harvester.

"That was close, 2 minutes off, and we would have lost the harvester, your visions came in handy," Gurney said with a chuckle.

Kynes was silent, her gaze focusing on Jack.

'This boy could not really be Lisan al-gaib, right...?' She thought to herself, she wanted to deny the possibility, but she could not pass off what she had witnessed Jack do.

'Wow... I can feel her eyes bearing a hole into the side of my head...' Jack thought to himself.

'I knew this would bring attention to me, but I had to prevent the harvester from being lost, it would be bad to take this hit, this time… the harvester survives, I successfully prevented a significant financial loss on the first expedition for the house.' Jack thought to himself.

A slight burden lifted off his mind as he relaxed on the seat behind him.

Jack glanced down and saw the worm underneath the sand rushing towards the position where the harvester was. In a matter of seconds, the worm reached it, lunging out of the ground, its massive mouth seemed to swallow a few tons of sand as it emerged.

Its mouth opened wide enough to easily swallow the harvester whole, its body a deep sandy yellow colour, thousands of large teeth lining the circumference of its mouth, with several more teeth in layers beneath the initial ones.

It seemed like it could swallow everything, in comparison the harvester was merely a small snack...

"Make distance," Leto calmly said as he pulled the handle of the ornithopter back.

Leto quickly pulled away the ornithopter and flew away.
