Chapter 70. New Skills

Emilio decided to use his Stat points before he continued his talk with Tuor. He checked his current Stats while he decided what to do with them.

He had three options on how to distribute them. He could reach the peak in either Energy or Body and leave the other Stat in 8, or he could leave both Stats at 9.

Technically, it should be optimal to leave one at ten. That would mean that his next Trial was going to be easier and he would also get an extra Trait, but there was another problem with that logic.

If he chose to assign all the points to Body he would never do the Body Trial, that, in a way, was teaching him how to increase the Stat.

Instead if he chose to assign all the points to Energy and he really sucked in the Body Trial, he would be stuck there for a long time. He had some confidence in himself after all the other Trials, but he would be taking a big risk.

“Tuor, I have one question over here. Given the results I had in the Energy Trial, what are my chances of succeeding in a single Trial from 9 Energy to 10?” Emilio decided to ask.

“Are you really thinking about leaving both at 9?”

“I want to try the Body Trial, but I have to consider that I might suck at it. In that case, I could go back to doing the Energy Trial to raise the last points. Either way, it would be only one Trial and the difference is between having 8 or 9 points in the Stat.”

Tuor nodded at Emilio’s reasoning. “You are right, this might be one of the few cases where it might be better to not assign the Free point to reach 10.

“I do believe you would do well in the Body Trial, but I am certain that the last Energy Trial shouldn’t be harder than the fifth one in a row. If it was like that, almost no one would be able to actually Rank up.”

When he heard the answer, Emilio could finally relax. He could try the Body Trial and in the worst case scenario he just had to wait for another week to raise his last Stats. Tuor was not going to be there, but there were still going to be Trials.

“Thank you for your help. I will leave both Stats at 9.”

Emilio sat down on the mattress and decided to Start with the Energy Stat because he already knew what assigning one to the Body did.

The moment he chose to rise the Stat he felt his body absorbing the World Energy around himself. It was not accumulating in his body like in the Trial, but it was being assimilated immediately at the same rate as it was being absorbed.

The speed of assimilation was way faster than what he did in the Trial, but this was a Free Point, so it was supposed to be fast.

As the daggers started upgrading, Emilio decided to ask the Shopkeeper about his new Skill.

“Do you have any advice on what element to choose in the Element Control Skill?”

“Did you finally manage to get a normal Skill? Though it is expected. This is a Skill that everyone gets at Rank 1. As long as you reach the peak of the Rank, you will get it. If you didn’t get it earlier, it will be your last Skill.”

That really surprised Emilio, as far as he knew the Skills were random and he was lucky, but he was discovering that there was a Skill that was not random at all. “Really, why?”

“Because it is the System's way of teaching you that you can fuse the World Energy with elements to control them. The choice you make will make it much easier for that element, but as long as you understand how to do it, you can use any element.”

“So, which element is a good choice to have the extra help in controlling it?”

“None, or better said, all are the same. In your Rank, you will only be able to choose Fire, Water, Earth and Air. But when you Rank it up you can keep focusing on them, or change it to an uncommon element.”

There are more elements then, I wonder what counts as uncommon.

“Is it the same which one I choose?”

“From a development point of view, yes. Just choose what you feel is right.”

Emilio thought for a while before asking once again. “Will air allow me to fly?”

  “If controlled correctly, then yes.”

Emilio doubted no more and chose Air as his Element.

“That is a super basic description!” Emilio complained.

“You will not need more than that. You have to learn how to control it and its uses, the same as your Stats.” Tuor explained.

“Well, Ami was able to make a grenade bullet, so I might develop some things too.” Emilio started wondering what he might be able to do with the Air Element and was interrupted by a question from the shopkeeper.

“By the way, now that your lucky strike is gone, what did you get for the other Skill?”

“Dagger Mastery. I have no idea how good it is though,” Emilio explained.

As soon as the shopkeeper heard the name of the Skill, he froze for an instant and then he just sighted.

“Forget what I said about the lucky strike. You are now a future Dagger Grandmaster at the very least.”

  “What? Is it good?”

“It is even rarer than the Soul Contract and this one has combat application. It is basically as if the world was your teacher. You will always be able to improve in your weapon technique.

“Not only that, but it will consider your current body and Skills for applications with your dagger. Given your amount of luck, I am tempted to believe that the Realm itself decided to nerf you by distracting you to not allow you to get a Bloodline.”

Emilio was happy that his Skill was a good one, but at this point even he was beginning to question what the hell was going on with his luck. It is not that he complained, but he really was in a lucky streak.

“No amount of good luck is something I will ever complain about,” Emilio concluded.

“Yeah, but could you share some of it?” Tuor asked.

“Are you saying you are not getting lucky?” Emilio countered and made Tuor realize that he was really getting lucky with this Trial.

He was already making much more money than he expected both with the tips and Amelia’s result, but at the same time he made a friend and was finishing a good business deal.

“I have to admit that ever since I got here I am getting luckier. Maybe I should be staying as close to you as possible.”

“Because an intermediary in an interplanetary deal and a friend is not enough, right?”

“With your luck, nothing is enough. Just finish with your upgrades, there should be no more surprises.”

Tuor was right, the rest of the upgrades went normally. He rose all of his Stats and the result was only two more upgrades to his daggers. They ended up as Rank 2 of Superior quality.

It was sad that he wouldn’t be having a Rank 3 weapon, but it also made sense. Given what Tuor said, by the time he reached Rank 3, he should be having access to the rest of the Realm.

It is not that a Rank 3 weapon was impossible to get, but you needed a Bloodline to be able to get to that point. Maybe he would be able to see one from Amelia.
