Breached

Gina's body surged forward with explosive speed.

Before either of them could react, her arm snapped outward and a violent mass of dark purple and black energy formed in her palm.

The glowing orb shot toward them like a blazing comet.

Marcellus barely had time to turn before the blast slammed into his chest.

A violent shock tore through his body and lifted him completely off his feet.

The force hurled him backward across the forest floor where he crashed hard into the dirt.

Leaves and soil burst into the air as his body rolled several times before finally skidding to a stop several yards away.

  "Marcellus!" Tymir shouted.

He reacted instantly and threw his hands forward as crimson energy began gathering within his palms.

  Gina was already moving.

Her head snapped toward him and the twisted smile on her face stretched wider.

Another blast erupted from her palm and struck Tymir directly in the chest.

Pain ripped through his body as the force launched him backward through the air. He slammed hard into the ground beside Marcellus, the impact driving the breath from his lungs.

Both of them groaned as they struggled to pull air back into their chests.

For several seconds neither of them moved.

Marcellus forced himself onto one knee and pressed a hand against the ground as he fought to steady his breathing.

"How is this possible?" he muttered. "She is supposed to be... dead."

His eyes lifted and locked onto Gina as she stepped slowly toward them through the trees.

"Somehow an entity must have gotten in and managed to possess her," Tymir said as he pushed himself upright, his chest still burning from the blast.

Marcellus shook his head slightly, disbelief etched across his face.

"Entities should not be able to cross onto Academy grounds," he said. "They are confined to the fourth dimension."

Gina released a low guttural growl that echoed through the forest.

Tymir clenched his teeth as he stared at her.

"Whatever entity is using her vessel," he said, "we have to stop it."

  Gina lunged forward again.

Tymir turned toward Marcellus. "We have to link."

Marcellus met his gaze and gave a sharp nod.

  Their eyes locked.

In the next instant their irises ignited with a brilliant flash of gold.

Energy surged between them as Tymir opened his energy center and merged it with Marcellus.

  The link formed instantly.

Golden light erupted around Marcellus's body.

Within seconds a radiant sword formed in his hand. Its blade glowed with brilliant energy that illuminated the dark forest around them.

  Marcellus moved.

He dashed forward with incredible speed and left a streak of golden light trailing behind him.

  Gina met him head on.

Their collision sent a violent shockwave tearing through the trees, rattling branches and scattering leaves through the air.

  Tymir raised his hands immediately.

A powerful golden shield formed around him and the barrier flared brightly as it absorbed the force of the collision.

Marcellus caught Gina's arm in the middle of her strike.

With a powerful twist of his body he grabbed hold of her and hurled her backward with tremendous force.

She crashed violently through several trees, splintering wood and snapping branches before vanishing into the darkness deeper within the forest.

Marcellus lowered his sword slightly as he stared into the darkness where she had disappeared.

Tymir kept his golden shield raised while his eyes searched the shadows between the trees.

A sharp cracking sound echoed through the forest.

  Then another.

Marcellus's grip tightened around the hilt of his sword.

The cracking grew louder as something began moving through the darkness toward them.

A shape slowly emerged between the trees.

Gina stepped back into the moonlight.

Her body hung at an unnatural angle as if the impact had shattered every bone inside her.

  Then her spine straightened.

A sickening series of pops echoed through the forest as her limbs twisted back into place. Her head tilted sharply to one side before snapping upright again.

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

The crooked smile never left her face.

Her white eyes locked onto Marcellus.

  Then her lips parted.

"Is that all you have?" she smirked, her voice carrying a cruel edge.

"I thought you could hit harder than that. I guess you have gone soft."

  The voice was wrong.

It sounded like Gina, but something darker moved beneath the familiar tone, as though another presence was speaking through her throat.

Marcellus stood motionless, his eyes locked on her as the words sank in.

Through the link Tymir felt the surge of shock and guilt ripple through him instantly.

Gina took another slow step forward.

"I see you replaced me. I didn't know you were into boys," she said with a mocking laugh.

  Marcellus's jaw tightened.

"How did you get here?" he asked firmly.

The thing wearing Gina's body laughed. The sound scraped through the night like broken glass.

"You two created a rift in this plane," it said. "I simply walked through it."

Tymir frowned. "What do you mean created a rift? We didn't do anything?"

The crooked smile widened. "You're doing it right now."

Gina launched forward with terrifying speed and the forest exploded into motion around them.

She crossed the distance between them in a blur.

  Marcellus reacted instantly.

His sword swept upward just as her clawed hand slashed toward his throat.

Steel and energy collided with a violent flash of light. The impact rang through the forest like a struck bell.

Marcellus slid backward several feet as the force of her attack drove him across the ground.

Through the link Tymir felt the strain immediately.

He lifted both hands and sent a surge of power forward. Golden light rushed into Marcellus and strengthened his stance.

Marcellus pushed forward again and swung his blade in a wide arc.

  Gina swiftly twisted aside.

Her body moved like something pulled by invisible strings. Each motion looked sharp and unnatural, as if the thing inside her had not fully learned how to control human limbs.

Her hand snapped outward again. A wave of dark energy erupted from her palm and tore through the trees.

  Tymir reacted instantly.

A golden shield flared into existence in front of Marcellus.

The blast slammed into the barrier and exploded outward in a shower of sparks.

The ground trembled beneath Tymir's feet.

  Marcellus rushed forward.

His sword flashed through the moonlight, the radiant blade cutting across Gina's side and tearing clean through fabric and flesh.

For a heartbeat, everything went still.

  Then the wound closed.

Skin, muscle, even the faint scorch marks from the golden blade melted back into place, as if some invisible hand was reversing the damage.

  Gina slowly lifted her head.

  That crooked smile slowly returned.

Marcellus quickly drove his blade toward her chest.

  Gina caught the sword.

She clenched her fist around the blade before Marcellus could pull it free.

Golden light flared violently where her palm closed around the weapon. The radiant energy hissed against her skin, scorching it black as the power burned into her flesh.

Still, she did not release her grip.

Instead the twisted smile on her face spread wider.

The air around them trembled as she slowly tightened her hand.

A sharp fracture split across the glowing blade.

  Another crack followed.

Thin lines of light splintered along the weapon as the strain spread through the radiant metal.

Marcellus clenched his teeth and pulled against her grip, trying to wrench the sword free, but it refused to move.

Behind him Tymir lifted both hands and formed a golden bow of pure energy.

A glowing arrow of crackling electricity appeared along the string, its light flickering across the surrounding trees.

Tymir drew the bow back and took careful aim.

  Then he released.

The electric arrow tore across the forest like a bolt of lightning.

At that same instant Gina clenched her fist.

  The glowing sword shattered.

Fragments of golden light burst outward as the blade exploded in Marcellus's hands.

Just as Gina raised her arm to strike, the electric arrow slammed into her chest.

A blinding flash of golden light erupted from the impact and the force blasted Marcellus backward off his feet.

Gina's body flew through the air and tumbled violently across the ground.

She flipped upright and glared toward Tymir.

Then she turned and vanished into the darkness of the forest.

Tymir released the link and dropped to one knee as exhaustion crashed over him.

Marcellus rushed over and grabbed him before he could fall further.

He pulled Tymir close and held him upright. "Are you okay?"

Tymir nodded slowly as he tried to steady his breathing. "Yeah," he said quietly. "I'm drained, but I'm okay."

Tymir leaned heavily against Marcellus as they made their way through the forest.

The adrenaline of the fight had faded and exhaustion now weighed heavily on his body. Each step felt slower than the last.

The only sound was the quiet crunch of leaves beneath their boots as they moved through the dark trees toward the academy.

Finally Marcellus broke the silence. "What did she mean?" he asked quietly.

Tymir glanced at him. "About what?"

Marcellus frowned slightly. "When she said we created a rift."

The words hung in the air between them.

Tymir looked ahead through the forest as he considered it. "I don't know," he admitted.

  He paused before continuing.

"But whatever it is, we need to tell Chancellor Sterling."

His voice grew more serious. "This is bigger than us."

Marcellus nodded slowly. "Yeah," he said. "If an entity really crossed into our dimension, the academy needs to know immediately."

They continued forward in silence, moving closer to the towering walls of Limnara Academy.

Tymir tightened his arm around Marcellus slightly as the fatigue continued to drain his strength.

The lights of the academy shimmered through the trees, casting long, trembling reflections across the forest floor.

The night air was still, almost unnaturally so, but the calm was a lie.

Danger had already crossed the boundaries of the forest, and it would not wait for them to return.

High above the quiet courtyards, Dorinda sat alone in her office.

Lantern light flickered across the scattered reports on her desk, highlighting the crease of her brow and tension in her shoulders.

Her eyes moved over the pages, but her attention was elsewhere, drawn to the faint tremor she sensed in the air.

Something had shifted, a disturbance that even the walls of the academy could not contain.

  She leaned forward, listening.

The silence of the night pressed against the windows, but it carried a weight she could not ignore.

Then a sharp alarm shattered the silence.

Dorinda's head snapped up, her eyes locking on the glowing notification that had flared to life across the monitoring panel.

She scanned the display, her gaze moving quickly over the lines of data.

Her eyes widened, and a cold weight settled in her chest.

  Entity breach detected.

She pushed back from her chair with a swift motion.

The seat slid backward across the floor as she moved quickly toward the door.

Moments later she was striding down the dim hallway toward the Chancellor's office, her footsteps echoing softly through the corridor.

  She did not bother knocking.

The door swung open as she stepped inside.

  "Chancellor," she said firmly.

Sterling looked up from his desk.

The expression on Dorinda's face alone was enough to wipe the calm from his.

"An entity has breached the border."

  Sterling went completely still.

Then he slowly rose from his chair. "Are you certain?" he asked quietly.

  Dorinda nodded once. "Yes."

Sterling turned and walked toward the large window behind his desk.

Outside, the academy grounds stretched into the dark forest beyond the protective boundary.

"We haven't had an entity breach in six decades," Dorinda said, her voice tight with concern.

She hesitated for a moment, her eyes shifting briefly toward Sterling before she continued.

"I thought that would never happen again since..." Her voice lowered slightly before she finished the sentence. "Since Agent Riven was banished."

  Sterling's expression hardened.

Before he could respond, the office door burst open again.

One of his assistants rushed inside, breathing hard.

"Chancellor Sterling, sir," he said quickly. "We just picked up a massive frequency signature just inside the border."

Sterling did not turn from the window.

"Yes," he said calmly. "I'm aware we have an entity breach."

"It's more than that, sir," the assistant continued, his voice tight with urgency. "According to the readings, this is some kind of quantum entanglement."

  Sterling finally turned.

His eyes moved to Dorinda. "We need to handle this carefully," he said.

His voice remained calm, but a sharp edge rested beneath it. "We can't afford to alarm the agents."

He paused, his gaze drifting back toward the darkness beyond the academy grounds.

  "Not yet."

Chancellor Sterling and Dorinda moved quickly down one of the academy's long stone corridors.

The quiet hallway was lit by rows of soft lanterns, their golden light stretching across the polished floor as their footsteps echoed faintly through the empty passage.

Sterling's expression remained rigid as he walked, his mind already racing through possibilities.

Then two figures appeared at the far end of the corridor.

Tymir and Marcellus stepped into the lantern light.

  Both of them looked exhausted.

  Sterling stopped immediately.

  "What happened?" he demanded.

Alarm flashed across his eyes as he studied them.

Marcellus took a breath before answering.

"An entity attacked us," he said, his eyes still wide from the encounter.

  "What?" Dorinda said sharply.

Her gaze moved quickly over them, taking in the dirt, the burn marks, and the way both of them were still catching their breath.

She turned toward the corridor behind her.

"I need medical!" she called out. "Now!"

Several agents farther down the hallway reacted immediately and hurried toward them.

Dorinda turned back to the two of them.

"Do you know what kind of entity it was?" she asked.

  Marcellus hesitated.

  Then he spoke.

"We don't know for sure, but it was using Gina's body."

  Dorinda went completely still.

"What did you just say?" she asked quietly.

  Marcellus swallowed.

  "It was Gina," he said.

Dorinda stared at him in disbelief.

"That's not possible," she said under her breath. "Gina is dead. I signed the report myself."

  Marcellus shook his head slowly.

"I know," he said. "That's what we thought too."

  Sterling had not moved.

His gaze remained fixed on the two of them, his expression unreadable.

  "Where?" he asked.

  "In the forest," Marcellus answered.

Sterling studied them for a long moment.

His eyes moved slowly from Marcellus to Tymir and back again.

Then he asked quietly, "What were the two of you doing all the way out there?"

Marcellus felt the weight of the Chancellor's attention pressing down on him.

  Sterling was not simply asking.

  He was measuring them.

Marcellus forced himself to remain calm.

"We were trying to get some extra combat practice in," he said. "Then she came out of nowhere."

He shook his head slightly. "We barely escaped."

Sterling said nothing for several seconds.

Then he turned sharply and began striding toward the academy entrance.

  Dorinda followed beside him.

As they moved down the corridor, she turned toward one of the nearby agents.

"I want the morgue surveillance footage from tonight," she said firmly. "Pull every camera angle from the holding room."

  The agent straightened immediately.

  "Yes, Director."

  Dorinda continued walking without slowing.

"Leave it on my desk before I return," she added.

  "Yes, ma'am."

They reached the large entrance doors.

Sterling stopped just before stepping outside and looked back at Tymir and Marcellus.

His voice was firm. "Tell no one about this."

  His eyes hardened.

  "Am I clear?"

Marcellus and Tymir exchanged a quick glance before nodding.

  "Yes, Chancellor," they answered.

  Sterling gave a short nod.

Then he pushed the doors open and stepped out into the night.

  Dorinda followed him.

The heavy doors closed behind them as they disappeared into the darkness beyond the academy grounds.
