Chapter 37 — The Outside Trigger

The world outside the hospital was loud and chaotic.

Ethan had insisted on a short walk in the hospital courtyard, despite Sofia’s protests. He said he needed air, needed to feel the world beyond the walls of the room.

Sofia walked beside him, keeping a careful hand near his elbow, watching his every move. His pace was slow, measured—but every sound, every movement in the bustling courtyard seemed to put him on edge.

Children’s laughter, distant car horns, even a dog barking triggered a flash of tension in his shoulders. His jaw was tight. His eyes darted to every shadow.

“I don’t understand,” he muttered, voice low. “Why does everything feel… dangerous?”

“Because your mind is trained to detect threats,” Sofia said softly, “and you’ve lived through real danger. You can’t just turn it off. But you can manage it. And I’m here. I’ll help you manage it.”

  He exhaled shakily. “I can’t… I can’t just… relax. I can’t breathe fully. I feel trapped, even out here.”

Sofia nodded. “I know. That’s why we take it slow. One step at a time. You don’t have to do it all at once.”

They reached a bench near a fountain. Ethan sat, hunched forward, staring at the rippling water as if it could swallow him whole.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Sofia crouched beside him, resting her hand on his arm. “Look at me,” she said gently.

  He didn’t move.

Sofia leaned closer. “Ethan, I’m here. You’re safe. This is just a fountain. You’re not back there. You’re not in danger. You’re with me. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

His eyes flickered toward hers, haunted but searching. “I feel… like I’m right back there. Like I’m reliving it. And I can’t stop it. I don’t even know if I want to stop it—I feel like if I stop, I’ll lose part of myself.”

“Then we face it,” Sofia said firmly. “Not alone. Together.”

He shook his head slightly. “I’m scared I’ll break down… in front of everyone. I don’t want people to see me like this. I thought leaving the military would mean control… but I’m… exposed.”

Sofia gripped his hands. “Being vulnerable isn’t weakness, Ethan. It’s strength. And you’re not exposed to anyone who can hurt you. I’m here. Only I matter right now.”

A sudden shout from the other side of the courtyard—two men arguing loudly—made him flinch violently. His body stiffened, panic rising.

  “They’re—again! I can’t! I can’t—”

Sofia grabbed his shoulders, forcing him to face her. “No! Look at me! You’re not there. They’re not a threat to you. I’m right here. I’m not leaving. You are safe!”

He trembled, gripping her hands, the fear raw and palpable. Tears pricked the corners of his eyes. “I can’t control it. I can’t!”

“You don’t have to control it,” she said softly but firmly. “You have to survive it. And you’re doing that right now, Ethan. Right here. You’re breathing. You’re with me. You’re surviving. That’s enough.”

Minutes passed as she held him, repeating the mantra over and over, helping him focus on her voice, her presence, the rhythm of his breathing. Slowly, the panic ebbed, though the shadow of fear lingered in his gaze.

“I hate that this follows me everywhere,” he whispered, voice hoarse. “Even outside these walls, I feel like I’m fighting a war I can’t win.”

“You’re not fighting alone,” Sofia said. “And you never will be. I won’t let you face it alone. Step by step. Breath by breath. That’s how we survive.”

He exhaled slowly, leaning into her touch. “Step by step… I hope I can keep up.”

“You already are,” she whispered. “You just have to keep going, and I’ll be here. No matter what.”

For now, the external trigger had passed. But both of them knew the truth: every outing, every sound, every moment outside the controlled environment of the hospital could ignite the fractures in Ethan’s mind.

Sofia understood what Camila had warned her about—the danger wasn’t just the PTSD itself, but the way it could pull Ethan away from her, even when he loved her.

And she realized tonight that love, no matter how strong, might not be enough.

  But she would fight.

Because giving up was not an option—not for her.

  And not for Ethan.
