Suspicion

  CHAPTER 16 — SUSPICION

The storm wasn’t the real danger.

The real danger was the gods watching it with him.

Dark clouds rolled across the sky as Paris walked north through the city.

Wind tugged at street signs and rattled loose construction fencing.

People hurried along the sidewalks, glancing up at the growing storm.

To them it was just bad weather.

  To Paris—

  It was a countdown.

  His phone buzzed.

The divine chat had come alive again.

Goddess of Fate: Storm front entering metropolitan boundary.

[Blood Saint]: Fatality probability remains unchanged.

  [Abyssal Observer]: Observation continues.

  Paris glanced at the sky.

Lightning flickered faintly within the clouds.

  The storm was almost here.

  His stomach tightened.

  “How do you stop lightning?”

  Another message appeared.

[Thunder Sovereign]: Atmospheric charge reaching critical threshold.

  Paris slowed his pace.

Lightning strikes weren’t predictable to normal people.

  But to the divine system—

  They were inevitable.

  His phone buzzed again.

Goddess of Fate: Strike vectors mapped.

[Blood Saint]: Impact points distributed across residential districts.

  Paris felt his pulse quicken.

  Residential districts.

  Homes.

  Families.

  Seventy-three deaths.

He turned down a narrow street lined with apartment buildings.

Windows rattled as the wind grew stronger.

The storm clouds were directly overhead now.

The sky darkened like evening had arrived early.

  His phone vibrated again.

[Abyssal Observer]: The variable approaches the predicted strike zone.

  Paris froze mid-step.

  “They can see that?”

  Another message appeared.

  Goddess of Fate: Correlation increasing.

[Blood Saint]: The anomaly moves toward the fatality cluster.

Paris resumed walking, trying not to look suspicious.

  But his chest tightened.

They weren’t just watching the storm anymore.

  They were watching him.

  His phone buzzed again.

  [Thunder Sovereign]: Probability deviation imminent.

Paris stopped beneath the awning of a small grocery store.

Rain began falling in heavy drops.

  The storm had arrived.

  Lightning flashed across the sky.

  Thunder followed seconds later.

  He checked the chat again.

Goddess of Fate: Strike probability within thirty seconds.

  Paris’s heart pounded.

  Thirty seconds.

But he didn’t know where the lightning would strike.

  Another message appeared.

  [Blood Saint]: Multiple impact points.

[Abyssal Observer]: Fatality probability remains constant.

  Paris clenched his jaw.

  “That’s not good enough.”

He stepped out from beneath the awning.

  Rain soaked his clothes instantly.

  The sky flashed again.

  And then—

  His phone buzzed violently.

Goddess of Fate: First strike descending.

  Paris looked up.

  Lightning tore through the sky.

  Blinding white.

The bolt struck the roof of a nearby apartment building.

The explosion of light lit the entire street.

  Paris’s breath caught—

  But nothing collapsed.

  No screams.

  No fire.

Just the crack of thunder echoing through the city.

  His phone buzzed again.

Goddess of Fate: Fatality branch removed.

  Paris blinked.

  “What?”

  Another message appeared.

  [Blood Saint]: Probability deviation confirmed.

[Abyssal Observer]: The anomaly has interfered again.

  Paris stared at the screen.

  “I didn’t even do anything.”

Lightning flashed again across the sky.

Another strike hit a power pole down the street.

  The transformer exploded.

  But the line snapped outward—

  Away from the sidewalk.

  No one was hurt.

  His phone buzzed again.

Goddess of Fate: Second fatality branch removed.

Paris felt the realization settle slowly.

His presence alone was changing the outcome.

  He didn’t have to act.

  Reality was bending around him.

  The chat erupted with messages.

[Blood Saint]: The anomaly distorts atmospheric probability.

Goddess of Fate: Lightning vectors shifting.

  [Abyssal Observer]: Fatality count recalculating.

Paris looked up at the storm.

  Lightning continued striking the city.

But every bolt seemed to miss the places where people stood.

Every branch of probability bent away from death.

The storm itself seemed to hesitate.

  His phone buzzed again.

Goddess of Fate: Fatality estimate reduced.

  Paris swallowed.

  “Reduced to what?”

  The next message appeared.

  Paris exhaled slowly.

  Seventy-three lives saved.

But the chat had gone silent again.

  Then—

  A single message appeared.

Demon Emperor Baal: The anomaly does not require action.

  Another followed.

[Blood Saint]: Its presence alters fate.

  Then—

  The final message appeared.

[Thunder Sovereign]: Then the anomaly must be located immediately.

Paris felt the chill run down his spine.

  Because for the first time—

The gods weren’t just observing anymore.

  They were hunting.

And somewhere far beyond the storm clouds—

The Architect had already begun calculating exactly where he was.
