Chapter 8 - Peasants Way Of Surviving Battlecraft

In this world, there's a power system not too far off from my own world. However, you need to be awakened first in order to gain power.

It's called 'SoulCraft', a power manifested by your own soul... or so they say. SoulCraft doesn't use stamina, it relies on your SoulPower.

People that are awakened are often called The Invokers, for those who invoke the name of The Almighty One. And The Conjurers, for those who call upon devils, demons, or even higher outer beings. Invoking or conjuring can be done in your heart, using words from your thoughts, but it's much more powerful when chanted using your mouth.

At this moment, the Deed of the present still hasn't awakened yet. Day by day, I need to praise The Almighty God, The One and Only Creator Of The Infinite World, until I'm chosen to be an Invoker. Of course, the daily praise won't stop even after I've awakened.

Seeing Erica's flame in action really made me wonder if I could awaken earlier than the original Deed. Time is definitely not on my side.

Deed was trying to tell me something, but Zeronoz stopped him and kept telling me that it isn't time yet, and told me to focus more on my physical abilities rather than some cool superpower system. However, I did get curious and dug deeper into Deed's memories... apparently you don't really need to awaken to be strong.

There are tons of Battlecrafts in this world. It's much better and far more improved than martial arts in my world. Battlecraft includes Breath Rhythm, Pulse Tuning, Nerve Switch, and Form Shift.

Breath Rhythm is the foundation of battlecraft. It serves as the fuel for the entire combat system. By consciously and mechanically controlling how oxygen enters and exits the body, it changes the depth, speed, and pressure of the breath. For example, a slow, shallow rhythm conserves oxygen for stealthy battlecraft, while a rapid and fast exhale floods the bloodstream with oxygen to prepare the body for explosive movement. Without the correct Breath Rhythm, the battlecraft won't work.

If breathing is the fuel, the heart is the engine. Pulse Tuning is the direct result of the Breath Rhythm. It literally "tunes" the battlecrafter's heart rate and blood pressure, shifting their physical body into suitable biological gears. For example, a battlecrafter can tune their pulse down to a near-standstill to become practically invisible to supernatural detection, or they can overclock their heart rate to flood their muscles with adrenaline, granting them superhuman speed and concussive physical power for short bursts.

Nerve Switch is the mental discipline to manually toggle the body's nervous system and pain receptors on or off.

When the Nerve Switch is On, the body is hyper-sensitized. The battlecrafter can feel the micro-shifts in air currents to dodge invisible attacks or hear an attack being cast before it fires. However, taking a hit in this state causes agonizing pain. One cool thing is that, I can combine this with the dodge mechanism this world has, which slows time down for the dodger, and you can in theory avoid all sorts of attacks.

When the Nerve Switch is Off, the body feels absolutely nothing. The fighter enters "invulnerability mode," allowing them to take a fireball directly or fight with a shattered arm without going into shock.

I think I might unconsciously turn my switch to this when being hit by Erica... I thought to myself.

'That's right, because I've learned battlecraft since I was at the orphanage. It's already natural to me.' Deed explained. 'Too bad that at this period I still haven't learned the FlameBlood Exclusive Battlecraft. With Nerve Switch Off, you'll be able to convert the damage received into speed.' Deed explained further.

'Can you just teach me that earlier?' I asked, since I don't have any memories of Deed prior to this period other than the ones he specifically tells me about.

'No can do. If they knew, you'd be executed on the spot. That's just how exclusive the nobles' battlecraft is.' Deed shrugged.

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

'Sounds like a premium to me.' Zeroze said.

Form Shifts is the physical execution of the fight. It is the specific footwork, body mechanics, and kinetic movement that the battlecrafter uses to actually engage the enemy.

The battlecraft used by Deed right now is just basic battlecraft. Peasants Way Of Surviving Battlecraft.

  Yep, that's basically the name...

  It has three forms.

"Peasants Way Of Surviving First Form: I Shall Take Any Kinds Of Beating!" It does basically what it says. I could only last longer in the Nerve Switch Off state...

Mind you, Erica is still hitting me and I'm currently on the ground.

  Am I a masochist?

"Alright, that's enough young lady." I said, preparing myself for a different form.

"Peasants Way Of Surviving Second Form: I Shall Not Be Hit!" This time, my body felt lighter than normal, and my Nerve Switch was On, which made it easier to find the right timing to dodge and easier to move during the dodge period.

As Erica's wooden sword was nearly hitting my butt, I was able to avoid it by a hair's breadth, predicting exactly where it would hit.

Now the dodge timing! Time seems to slow down... time to use the third form!

"Peasants Way Of Surviving Third Form: Time To Run Away!" Every movement to run away, roll away, or escape shall be faster.

And with this, I successfully donkey-roll my butt faster and start running away to escape from Erica.

  "Nigerundayoooo!!!" I shouted, running away.

Erica was dumbfounded when she saw me.

"Ahhh you dare to run! Come back here, Deed!!" Erica shouted as I left her in the dust.

  I'm fast as f*ck boiii!

I could feel the sun's burning heat on my skin. I think it's already past 7am.

I took a nice shower after that horrendous 'training'... what kind of training is that? Acting as a sandbag? I couldn't help but lampoon.

'And what's with the lame battlecraft...' I complained to the original owner of this body.

Deed scratched his face and shrugged it off.

'It couldn't be helped, this is the only one that's less risky when being overused.' Deed explained. 'Unlike other battlecrafts that could be learned in the orphanage, overusing them could leave me crippled. Besides, I'm not planning to fight much in the first place...'

'Told you, he's so much like you, Null.' Zeronoz said with a smug grin, making fun of both his lame other selves.

'So, what should I do now?' I asked my other selves, treating them as if they were my guides.

Technically they are my cheat code and my very own system, if this were like those LitRPGs I've read in the past.

'It's good for you to think that way.' ROH said, acknowledging my mindset. 'You can only rely on yourself. We are only human, granted with free will in the first place.' He preached.

'To be honest, you don't need to worry much... we can handle the rest when the time comes to save that young lady.' Zeronoz said, my lunatic self actually assuring me not to pressure myself too much.

'Then what about your time limits on possessing me later?' I asked, worried if it would end up like my original world before being sent here.

'Keh keh keh, we... no, you have your own secret weapon already.' Zeronoz said with a smile, hinting at something.

I still don't get it. They aren't that worried anymore... just telling me to act normal and adjust to my life here.

Well, since that's what they want me to do, then I'll do just that.

Who else could believe in my-selves other than me myself?

Let's see, I have free time right now since Erica gave me 3 more days to train.

  Should I train more?

'Well, if you wanted to get your butt hit like before, you're free to train with Erica for that.' Zeronoz said, cackling.

'You could go check the library.' Zeroze suggested. 'How about learning more about this world.'

'Library huh? I used to spend time there.' Deed said. 'Why would you learn more about this world if you could learn it by using my memories?' Deed asked.

'That'll take the immersion away by not experiencing it himself.' Zeroze said, complaining. 'Also, it takes a lot of energy to manifest the memories. As of now, doing it once per day is already taking a huge toll on me.'

'I see...' Deed was somewhat disappointed. He was hoping for his other self to understand more about him.

'There'll come a day when we'll be able to be one again.' ROH suddenly said.

  Everyone, including me, was shocked.

'What do you mean by that, ROH?' I asked him with my thoughts.

But he just replied with, 'Time will tell.'

Which makes things much more mysterious.

How does ROH know? How much does he know? What's the real reason for all my past enemies from my past lives to seek me out and want to kill me?

Now that I think of it... why did all of this happen?

'Don't think too much about it, Null. Regardless of whatever the reason is, ROH is still you. Besides, this mystery is fun for you too, right?' Zeronoz said with a smile. 'No need to spoil your own fun.' He said like a lunatic.

Hearing that somewhat eased my mind. Yeah... I am having fun.
