Chapter 97 - The Weight of Four Hearts

The moment all four hands touched—

  Alya's, Cael's, Rian's, and Orin's—

  the soulscape detonated with light.

The corrupted cores—Fire, Earth, and Light—

were yanked toward the resonance they had feared for centuries.

  A real Triad.

And the heart that once lost his.

The Devourer's monstrous half shrieked, voice splitting:

  "NO—

  YOU CANNOT—

  YOU CANNOT PURIFY ME—

I AM WHAT THE WORLD MADE—

  I AM WHAT LOSS CREATES—"

Alya stepped forward, glowing gold and black, her aura shaking violently.

  "Then let's remake you."

  The Purification Begins

Light spiraled around their joined hands—

  four auras intertwining.

  Alya — Gold-White (heart)

  Cael — Silver-Gold (anchor)

  Rian — Blue-Gold (shadow)

Orin — Dimming Gold (broken heart)

  Together...

They formed the shape the roots had not seen

  in thousands of years.

  A Triad Resonance, restored.

  But it wasn't perfect—

because Alya's corruption twisted the pattern,

darkening it with black streaks that fought back

  against the purification.

  The soulscape trembled.

Cael's grip tightened around Alya's waist.

  "You're losing yourself—pull back—"

Alya shook her head, breathing hard.

  "No...

I can see the corrupted cores...

  they're reacting to my voice...

  I have to go deeper."

  Rian's voice cracked:

  "Alya—your skin—look—!"

Darkness had crept up her neck,

  across half her face,

  like living tattoos of shadow.

  Alya reached up—

  her fingers shook.

  "...It's fine."

"No," Cael barked, "it's not fine!"

  Rian grabbed her hand.

"Alya, the corruption is syncing with your root—

if you go any further, you won't be able to separate from it."

  Orin swallowed hard.

  "She's becoming what I became."

  Alya turned to him.

"Then help me avoid your mistakes."

  Orin's Awakening

Orin looked at the monstrous self behind him—

the towering, shadowed, howling remnant of his despair.

  He stepped forward,

  still weak, still trembling,

but facing the monster that had been his body for centuries.

  He whispered:

"...I'm done letting you speak for me."

  The Devourer roared:

  "YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT ME—

  I AM YOUR PAIN—

  YOUR LOSS—

  YOUR TRUTH—"

  Orin's voice hardened.

  "You were never my truth.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

  You were my prison."

  And his aura flared—

gold blazing bright enough to blind.

  Alya gasped.

  "Orin—!

  You—your power—!"

  Cael's breath hitched.

  "He's regaining it."

  Rian muttered:

  "About damn time."

  The Monster Panics

The Devourer felt its hold slipping.

  It lunged.

  The corrupted cores pulsed violently—

  throwing shockwaves across the soulscape.

Alya cried out as the black veins tightened around her heart.

Cael caught her before she fell.

  "AYLA—stay with me—please—please—!"

  Rian braced her other side,

  his own aura fracturing violently.

  "Don't you dare leave us—

if you die in here I will personally haunt your ghost!"

  Alya struggled to breathe.

  "It's...

  it's so much...

  the pain—

  his pain—

  it's... endless—"

Orin stepped closer, voice softer now.

  "Because I carried it alone.

  You're not alone."

  He reached out—

  and placed his glowing hand

  over Alya's corrupted one.

  Alya's eyes widened.

  Her breathing hitched.

The blackness on her skin paused—

  just a fraction.

  Orin whispered:

"Let me help you bear it.

  Not replace you.

  Just share it."

  Alya's eyes filled.

"You... you'd take that risk... after everything...?"

  Orin smiled, broken but sincere.

"I know what it means to drown in pain.

I won't let you drown too."

  The Combined Resonance

  They joined hands again—

  Alya

  Cael

  Rian

  Orin

  —and the soulscape erupted.

  The corrupted cores screamed—

like living hearts being pulled from tar.

  The purification beam shot outward—

  a spiral of gold

  blue

  silver

  white

  and soft, healing gold.

  The monster shrieked:

  "NO—

  NO—

  NO—

  I WILL NOT DIE—

  I WILL NOT—"

  Alya shouted back:

"YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO LIVE LIKE THIS!"

The light pierced the first corrupted core.

  FIRE.

  The shell melted.

  The corruption hissed and evaporated.

  Inside it—

  a tiny, glowing ember remained.

  Alya gasped.

  "It's... his fire root core."

  Cael whispered:

  "Uncorrupted..."

  Rian laughed under his breath.

  "One down."

  But Alya didn't smile.

  Her corruption pulsed violently again—

  reaching her jawline,

  her ear,

the corner of her right eye.

  Her vision dimmed.

  "Cael...

  Rian...

  I can't hold it..."

Cael wrapped both arms around her, trembling.

  "Let us help—

  just let us—"

  Rian grabbed her other hand.

  "We're here—we're not leaving—"

Orin pressed both palms over Alya's heart.

  "You can do this.

  We can do this.

  Together."

  Alya's breath caught.

  Her voice broke.

  "...okay."

  The Second Core Breaks

  The resonance flared again—

  EARTH.

  The green corrupted core fractured.

A storm of dust and roots erupted—

then dissolved into pure green light.

  Alya sobbed from the intensity.

Cael cried out as her pain blasted through the Link.

Rian held both of them up as their legs buckled.

  Orin nearly collapsed,

  but forced himself upright.

  "One more...

  one more..."

But Alya wasn't looking at the third core.

  She was staring at Orin.

  Her voice was faint.

  "Orin...

  you're fading."

  His outline flickered.

  His aura dimmed.

  He smiled.

  "It's alright."

  Alya's heart shattered.

  "No—

  NO—

  you're not leaving—

  not after everything—!"

  Orin shook his head gently.

"The corruption was all that kept me tethered.

  Once it's gone...

  I'll finally be free."

  Cael whispered, horrified:

  "...free as in—

  dead...?"

  Rian grip tightened painfully.

  "Don't you dare—"

  Orin smiled sadly.

"I've been dead for a long time."

Alya grabbed his wrist with both hands, tears falling.

  "No—

  No—

  Orin—

  you deserve to live—

  you deserve—"

  He whispered:

  "Heart... I already lived.

  Let me rest."

  Alya sobbed.

  "I can't—

  I can't lose you too—

  please—please don't go—"

Orin leaned his forehead to hers.

"You gave me back what I lost.

  I remember who I was.

  And because of you—

  —I am whole."

  The last corrupted core pulsed.

  Orin looked toward it.

  "Let's finish this."

  The Final Core: Light

The white core, the purest and most painful,

  began to crack.

  Alya screamed—

her corruption flaring so violently Cael nearly fainted.

  Rian shouted her name.

  Orin supported her from behind.

Cael held her up in his arms.

And the four hearts joined one last time.

  Their resonance turned blinding—

pure white, shimmering gold, deep blue, silver, and ancient gold—

  spinning into a vortex.

  The final corrupted core shattered.

  And then—

  The monster fell silent.

The Devourer's shell crumbled into pure light.

  The soulscape stilled.

  Alya fell to her knees.

The corruption across her skin flashed—

  pulled violently—

  then—

  stopped.

The black cracks slowly began to retract.

  Alya gasped for air.

  She was alive.

  Barely.

  But alive.

Cael wrapped her in both arms.

Rian pressed his forehead to her shoulder.

  Alya whispered:

  "...Orin...?"

  Silence.

  Then—

A warm hand touched her cheek.

  She looked up.

  Orin knelt before her,

  no longer corrupted,

  glowing with soft, peaceful gold.

  "I'm here."

  Alya sobbed.

  "You're okay—

  you're okay—"

  Orin shook his head gently.

  "No, Heart.

  I'm not staying."

  Alya's breath froze.

  "No—

  NO—

I didn't save you just to lose you—"

  Orin smiled softly.

  "You didn't lose me.

  You freed me."

His hand passed gently through hers.

  He was turning to light.

Cael held Alya tighter as she shook.

  Rian whispered:

  "Orin..."

  Orin looked at both boys.

  "Thank you...

  for loving her."

  Cael's eyes filled.

Rian looked away to hide his.

Orin leaned close to Alya one last time.

"You will be the greatest heart the world has ever known.

  But never forget—

  even the strongest heart...

  needs someone to hold it."

  He cupped Alya's cheek—

  warm, real—

  just for a moment.

  Then he whispered:

  "Goodbye."

And Orin dissolved into golden light.
