Chapter 3.

  Chapter 3.

Soo-chan decided to take care of the injured fox.

He felt a pang of sympathy for the creature left all alone—just like him. So he treated its wounds and filled Maru’s old bowl with food and water.

The fox didn’t refuse his kindness. It quietly emptied the bowl.

It didn’t bristle or growl in suspicion.

Soo-chan instinctively knew the fox now saw him as its lifesaver.

“Come on. Let’s go send your sibling off.”

He wrapped the dead fox’s body in an old cloth and headed to the back mountain. He planned to bury it right beside Maru—his old best friend.

He believed this fox would become a good companion to Maru in the afterlife.

Even as Soo-chan dug the grave and laid the body of its kin inside, the clever fox showed no resistance or protest. It simply lowered both tails and watched quietly, as if it fully understood what he was doing.

“You’re hurt. You should’ve stayed home and rested.”

Soo-chan grumbled at the fox that insisted on following him, then pulled out a bottle of soju.

It was the bottle Jang had brought yesterday.

He poured some over Maru’s grave and the new one, then placed the head of yesterday’s flounder on top of the fresh mound.

“This is called a rite. It’s how we honor the departed and wish them peace on their journey.”

He spoke even though he knew the fox couldn’t understand.

Talking to himself had become a habit ever since he and Maru were the only ones left on the island.

He was, after all, the island’s number-one chatterbox.

“You have to do this so the soul can travel comfortably. So say goodbye properly—tell your friend to go safely.”

  “Kyaoh.”

  The fox answered.

Whether it was a real reply or just scolding him for talking to himself, Soo-chan couldn’t tell.

“Such a cool guy. Should I name you ‘Sick’? Hey, Sick.”

  “Kyaoh!”

The fox whipped its head around.

“Not good? Then how about Tough? Tough. It means strong and cool. Fits a tough guy like you with that iron will.”

  Soo-chan tried again.

This time the fox turned its head and looked straight at him.

It tilted its head while watching him ramble alone, but Soo-chan decided to take that as agreement.

“Alright. From now on, you’re Tough. Tough. I’ll call you Tough.”

  “Kyaoh?”

“Come on, Tough. Let’s go change your bandages.”

  Soo-chan headed back home.

Tough stared at his retreating back for a long moment, glanced once more at its sibling’s grave, then rose and followed.

“Looks like it’s not planning to fight me. That’s a relief. Since it knows I saved it, I probably won’t get zapped by that weird lightning again.”

Seeing how obediently it trailed behind, Soo-chan felt relieved.

He had secretly worried the fox might blast him in the back of the head.

With that fear gone, he brought out the first-aid kit and sat on the wooden bench. He patted the bench floor a few times to call the fox over.

  “Come here.”

At his gesture, Tough stared at him.

It sniffed the bandages and ointment, then quietly approached.

  “You understand this is medicine?”

Tough didn’t answer. But Soo-chan was convinced it knew exactly what was happening.

The fox lay down beside him—still facing away with its tail toward him, but the fact that it pressed its body against him meant it was trusting him.

“Our Tough is so smart. Two tails and everything—you really are a spirit creature.”

  “Kya-woo.”

  “Kya-woo? Not kyaoh this time?”

  “Kya-aa-woo.”

  “Kya-aa-woo? Like this?”

  “Kya-aa-woo.”

  “Okay. Kya-aa-woo. Kya-aa-woo.”

Soo-chan mimicked the fox’s cry as if he had become one himself.

Of course, real communication wasn’t happening. But feeling the warmth of Tough’s body against his thigh, Soo-chan was certain the fox was opening its heart to him. And that warmth was enough to chase away the shadow of loneliness that had hung over him.

“The small cuts are almost healed already.”

Soo-chan examined the wounds and murmured.

The big ones were still there, but the smaller scratches had closed in less than half a day.

It couldn’t be just the ointment’s effect—the fox’s natural recovery was clearly extraordinary.

“Must be because you’re from another world, huh?”

His gaze drifted toward the house.

More precisely, toward the basement portal.

After the monsters died, he had worried more might appear, so he checked inside the portal himself.

“When I went in, it was just brick floors and walls, but beyond that… there’s definitely a huge space.”

What Soo-chan had seen was a long corridor of white bricks lit by blue light pouring from the high ceiling.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

The passage stretched endlessly narrow, and even with his island-honed eyesight, he couldn’t see the end.

Naturally, he couldn’t tell if more monsters lurked there either.

As long as the portal remained, he couldn’t relax.

“I blocked it with the neighbor’s fridge and furniture for now… but there’s no guarantee another monster won’t come out. I can’t abandon the house… So I have to fight, don’t I?”

He muttered while looking at Tough.

The moment their eyes met, something appeared before him.

[Name: Tough] [Level: 7] [Alias: Persistent Fang] [Strength: 12] [Agility: 18] [Vitality: 20] [Intelligence: 8] [Mental: 20] [Mana: 30] [Skill: Lightning Shock Lv2]

  A status window.

It appeared whenever he locked eyes with someone.

It hadn’t shown up from the beginning—only after the big monster died. Or perhaps it was a side effect of entering and leaving the portal.

“It even has a name now. It wasn’t there yesterday… Did it appear because I named it?”

It was shocking enough to make anyone fall over, but Soo-chan’s reaction was calm.

He had already experienced something similar yesterday, and growing up on the island had made him quick to adapt anyway.

“Still, those stats are insane. Meanwhile mine are pathetic.”

Soo-chan picked up the hand mirror he’d brought from his sister’s room and looked at his reflection. Sure enough, a window like Tough’s appeared in front of the mirror.

  [Name: Jung Soo-chan] [Level: 1] [Strength: 6] [Agility: 7] [Vitality: 8] [Intelligence: 5] [Mental: 4] [Mana: 3]

  This was his own status.

It wasn’t limited to others—he could see his own too.

As long as something reflected his face—mirror, basin of water, anything—he could summon his information.

“If Tough really wanted to fight, I’d be crushed in seconds. I’m only level 1. Good thing we became friends.”

Comparing Tough’s level to his own, Soo-chan muttered again.

Before seeing the stats he had thought of it as just a two-tailed dog, but now it looked like a majestic spirit beast.

“Anyway, since there are levels, I can probably level up too, right? But how? Maybe with these gems?”

He opened his small pocket bag and took out the stones.

[Soul Stone: Contains a portion of the deceased’s power and experience.]

Seven round, glowing blue gems rolled onto the bench.

They were called soul stones, and they had come from the monsters and the dead fox yesterday.

Clearly, creatures from the portal dropped them upon death.

“The description says this can raise levels… but I have no idea how to use them.”

Soo-chan tilted his head while holding one.

Tough stood up and looked at the stones in his hand.

It sniffed them, then separated two small ones and one large one with its nose and put them in its mouth.

  “Are you… eating them?”

Instead of answering, Tough opened its mouth to show the stones on its tongue.

The size of the stones on its tongue gradually shrank.

  They were being absorbed.

The process was slow, but once all the stones were gone, Tough’s status updated.

[Name: Tough] [Level: 10] [Alias: Persistent Fang] [Strength: 15] [Agility: 18] [Vitality: 23] [Intelligence: 8] [Mental: 20] [Mana: 33] [Skill: Lightning Shock Lv2]

Level jumped from 7 to 10, and Strength, Vitality, and Mana each rose by +3.

It had grown stronger by absorbing the soul stones.

“So that’s how you level up. Aside from eating them with your mouth, it’s pretty much like a game.”

  “Kyaoh.”

  “Hm? What?”

  “Kyaoh-oh.”

“You want me to try too?”

  Tough nodded.

It really was telling him to eat them.

“Wait—you actually understand what I’m saying?!”

Soo-chan was startled as he stared at the stones.

It seemed Tough had understood him.

  Tough nodded again.

  “Really? You really understand me?”

  “Kyaoh.”

  “Then wag your tail.”

Tough tilted its head, then wagged its tail.

“Now lower your head and raise just one tail. Whoa, it did it. Okay, head up, raise the other tail too.”

  Soo-chan kept testing.

Tough obeyed a few times, but eventually got annoyed and swatted his face with its tail.

  “Ow! That hurts.”

  “Kyaoh.”

  “Hurry up and eat already?”

  “Kya-woo-woo.”

  “Fine, fine. I got it.”

At Tough’s urging, Soo-chan hesitated, then looked at the remaining soul stones.

They came from monsters, so putting them in his mouth felt gross. But if it raised his level, it was worth it.

No guarantee more monsters wouldn’t appear.

  “Screw it.”

Under Tough’s watchful eye, Soo-chan popped a soul stone into his mouth.

  “…Tastes like nothing.”

It had no flavor at all.

It felt like holding a hard pebble in his mouth. But strangely, the stone shrank like candy, and its light seeped into him.

As the light entered, fatigue vanished and strength flowed through his body.

  It wasn’t a bad feeling.

  “Let’s check.”

Once the stone completely disappeared, Soo-chan lifted the mirror again.

  [Name: Jung Soo-chan] [Level: 5] [Strength: 9] [Agility: 10] [Vitality: 8] [Intelligence: 5] [Mental: 7] [Mana: 6]

  It really went up.

From level 1 to 5 in one go.

Strength, Agility, Mental, and Mana each rose by +3.

“Looks like each level gives +3 to some stats. I can’t choose which ones. Got it.”

  Soo-chan nodded.

  But the changes weren’t over.

[Class Change Level Reached.] [Achievement Analysis.] [Hunted an Urth High Goblin.] [Tamed a Spirit Beast: Sylvester Fox.] [Recommended Classes] [1. Fearless Warrior.] [2. Brave Brawler.] [3. Swift Spear Thrust Master.] [4. Cowardly Assassin.] [5. Tamer of Spirit Beasts.]

  “What is all this?”

A class recommendation window appeared, as if it had watched his every action.

Soo-chan curiously reached for “Swift Spear Thrust Master.”

[Swift Spear Thrust Master.] [Class Perks: Slight increase to Strength, Agility, Vitality. Spear Skill acquired.] [Select Swift Spear Thrust Master as your class?] [Yes / No]

It asked if he wanted to choose.

“I guess this is how you pick a class that fits you. No idea how it works, but it can’t be bad, right?”

Out of curiosity, he checked each one.

The first four offered minor physical boosts and skills related to swordsmanship, brawling, assassination, etc.

  They were all similar.

But the last one—Tamer of Spirit Beasts—stood out.

[Tamer of Spirit Beasts.] [Class Perks: Slight increase to Vitality, Mental, Mana. Acquire Taming Skill and Skill Sharing.]

“Taming and Skill Sharing? This gives two skills?”

Soo-chan tapped Taming and Skill Sharing.

[Taming: You can tame a creature that has opened its heart to you, making it swear loyalty. A loyal creature obeys your commands.] [Skill Sharing: You can share skills from tamed creatures. However, if the tamed creature dies, the shared skill becomes unusable.]

“I haven’t played many games, but… isn’t Tamer way better? The more monsters you tame, the more skills you get…”

After reading the perks, Soo-chan spoke.

At a glance, Tamer seemed far more unique and powerful than the others.

  “Kya-woo-woo.”

  “Hm? Hurry up and choose?”

  “Kya-woo-woo.”

  Tough urged him.

After a brief hesitation, Soo-chan decided on Tamer.

Yeah. If I become a Tamer, at least I won’t be alone again.

The skills were appealing, but more than that—he hoped Tamer would mean he’d never have to be lonely again.

  [Beginning class change.]

  Light enveloped his body.

It wrapped around him completely, and the moment it did, new messages appeared.

[Class Perks: Vitality, Mental, Mana +10.] [Taming Lv1 acquired.] [Taming Lv1: You can tame up to one creature. Ability consumption depends on the creature’s will.] [Tamed Creatures: 0] [Skill Sharing Lv1 acquired.] [Skill Sharing Lv1: You can select and share one skill from a tamed creature.] [Shared Skills: 0]

  Class change complete.

With boosted stats and new skills, Soo-chan examined himself in wonder, checking for any physical changes.

“No visible change. Just the skills. External changes probably only happen when I actually use them, like Tough.”

He clenched and unclenched his fist.

Nothing looked different, but the sensation was new.

He felt energized, like the rush before a sprint.

“But why no shared skills yet?”

  “Kya-woo.”

“Oh! Right—I haven’t tamed anyone yet.”

At Tough’s cry, Soo-chan realized he had only just changed class.

No tamed creatures meant no shared skills.

  “But how do I tame?”

  “Kya-woo.”

  “Hm?”

Tough placed its head on his lap.

At that moment another message appeared.

[Sylvester Fox, Tough, is showing favor toward you.]

“I think I get it. Taming.”

[Skill activated. Beginning Taming.] [Target is not resisting.] [No ability points consumed.]

Understanding the situation, Soo-chan stroked Tough’s head and spoke.

Light flowed from his hand into Tough, then back from Tough into him.

It looked like their souls were linking.

When the process ended, Taming completed and new messages appeared.

[Name: Jung Soo-chan] [Level: 5] [Class: Tamer of Spirit Beasts] [Strength: 9] [Agility: 11] [Vitality: 18] [Intelligence: 5] [Mental: 17] [Mana: 16] [Skills: Taming Lv1, Skill Sharing Lv1] [Taming Lv1: You can tame up to one creature. Ability consumption depends on the creature’s will.] [Tamed Creatures: Tough] [Skill Sharing Lv1: You can select and share one skill from a tamed creature.] [Lightning Shock Lv2: Unleash powerful lightning with mana. With focus, you can guide the lightning in a chosen direction. Mana cost: 15.]

“It worked? I can use skills now too?”

  “Kya-woo-woo.”

  Soo-chan asked.

  Tough answered.

He still couldn’t understand the words, but he took it as a yes and stretched his hand toward the yard. Focusing, he activated the skill.

  “Lightning Shock.”

Sparks flew from his palm, then a fairly strong bolt of lightning shot out and struck the iron gate in the yard.

  Boom!

The gate rang loudly and sparked.

It didn’t break, but arcs danced around the handle—proof of how powerful the strike had been.

“It—it worked! Lightning came out exactly like I imagined!”

Amazed, Soo-chan stretched his hand again and tried to focus. But nothing happened.

  He quickly realized why.

“I’m out of mana. I only have 16 total.”

  His current mana was 1/16.

  One use had drained 15.

  “Kya-woo.”

Tough nodded, as if it knew he was out of mana.

“Anyway, I’m glad I got a skill. Thanks, Tough. For accepting me so easily.”

  “Kya-woo.”

At his words, Tough looked up at him, then nonchalantly leaned its body against him again.

Feeling the warmth, Soo-chan stroked Tough’s head once more.

In that moment, Soo-chan and Tough grew even closer.
