Chapter 30: Wizard of Glacial Chains

Ethan walked behind the Crocodiarii, a few steps brought him up the berm the guards had built so it was possible to look over the palisade wall. What he saw drained the remaining blood from his already pale face. Hundreds of undead moved towards the guard post. He saw Crocodiarii but also the hulking Brammgestir.

Their bodies broken, he saw missing jaws and broken horns. Some crawled, the legs missing, while others had no arms to hold a weapon. Their eyes are not the milky white you would expect but black like obsidian. Those without eyes had black flames burning in their eye sockets. The group was still a few minutes away and Ethan hoped that was all the time he needed.

He turned his head to the guard that brought him over. “I suggest you start shooting, you need to defeat as many as you can.” Before Ethan stepped from the berm he analyzed one of the bigger zombies and shivered. How is he still alive?!

  [Brammgestir(Cursed Zombie) - Level 15]

[The Brammgestir are a proud and sturdy folk known for their impressive strength and resilience. With the heads of bulls and the bodies of muscular humanoids, they embody both brute power and a deep connection to the earth. While zombies lost their connection to the earth, some of them possess the power of curses instead. Making them a dangerous foe]

“I killed him! God dammit, fuck you tutorial!” He made an obscene gesture towards the sky before turning around and walking over to some barrels. Ethan was fuming with anger but he needed to concentrate. There was something more at stake than just killing that undead prick, again. Slowly he found the cold edge that was a part of him for some time now. His boiling blood froze and the flames in his eyes extinguished and grew cold and focused once again. Jumping on to the barrel he started to discuss it with Nora.

Alright, I already know two classes I won’t pick. While the [Crystal mage-tech] and the [Frostbane Mage] sound fun it’s not something I really want. The first is just too unpredictable and I’m certain we can do something like that through other ways later on. The Frostbane Mage is good but I already have my subclass for. That leaves us with the [Glacial Wizard], [Frostbinder Wizard], [Blizzard Mage], he sent his first thoughts to Nora and she listens intently. Both thought for a moment before Nora spoke up.

You don’t need to pick the [Blizzard Mage], while I sound strong you can’t fight alone all the time, especially now that I picked my path too. I can conjure winds and blizzards, at least I will in the future. While the situation seems dire we still need to think about our own path. Her eyes wandered over the guards that used their slings to shoot fist sized rocks at the approaching undead.

If necessary we just leave them here and search for a new outpost, the region is the biggest so far after all. Instead of being shocked that she would just abandon the Crocodiarii Ethan just nodded and saw nothing wrong with her plan. His focus returned to the classes he needed to pick from. I don’t think the [Glacial Wizard] is something I will pick. While single target damage is important I worked massive spells already with my simple mage class. The system is great but I don’t believe if you let it hold your hand you can achieve anything.

He rubbed his hand over his face and sighed, that only left one choice for him, especially something he liked. The use of his chains defined his whole fight against the fire giant. It felt right to focus on crowd control, while he could still use everything else it would make the aspect he wanted to focus on just straight up better.

I think we both knew it would be the [Frostbinder Wizard] right? Well the undead, while slow, will soon be here. Let's see what this class offers. Nora just sent her approval, lately they didn’t need to use many words for everyday things.

Ethan took a deep breath and picked the new class.

[The Wizard of Glacial Chains is feared throughout the lands of Frostfall, the home of the Winter elves. They excel at freezing and pinning entire battlefields, while others create opportunities for attacks, they also use them with devastating efficiency . While not the strongest attackers they are a bulwark of defense. +6 Wisdom +6 Intelligence +2 Vitality + 4 Free points]

[Eternal Chains of Ice] Gifted with eternal ice these chains will never break; only those stronger than the wizard can free themselves of his entrapment. Used as a defensive, offensive and crowd control ability these form the core of the wizards abilities.

[Frozen Prison of the Progenitor] While others create traps, he builds a prison. Slows enemies down before freezing them in place, frozen shackles bind everything besides the strongest foes

[Bulwark of the Northern Peaks] Like in the days of old the wizard is capable of providing mighty defenses, all structures created are more resilient and can withstands all kind of attacks if the wizard and pay the upkeep in mana

[The Abyss of Winter] On the world of Frostfall exists an abyss reaching the frozen core of the world, This ability- ????????????????????????

Ethan was shocked, again the system interfered with his class! But it wasn’t in a bad way but still, he knew he had the quest to find the [Heart of Winter] but who said he wanted to be the progenitor of an entire species! He looked over the abilities for his new class and was shocked, they sounded powerful but not only that, they sounded less restrictive. His best guess was that classes and skills slowly loosened the shackles, giving people the chance to actually use their abilities the way they wanted.

It left a bad taste in his mouth that he was working with training wheels so far, the mage class before was to basic to even work with his abilities as a so-called progenitor.

Ethan felt the changes, new stats points locking themselves in place. His thoughts got faster, his mind grew in terms of capacity, old memories surfaced as it improved. He felt his body getting stronger too. He also noticed the 20 free points he gathered and quickly invested 7 of them in both wisdom and intelligence while putting the remaining 6 into perception, he couldn’t lose the overview, especially in larger battles like the one he would participate in.

After a very long time he decided to look over his entire status, something he usually avoided.

Some things looked outright pathetic, he would have to work on those in the future. But he was also proud of his current achievements, the path he took so far was filled with strife and challenge but he built something from it. Then he noticed that his race changed! He was, somehow, a full winter elf…carefully he touched his ears, felt the sharp point and how long they became without him noticing.

His mind started to wander because of all the changes, looking back at his life he was glad that he was here now. He took everything surprisingly well so far. He missed his sister, his parents but he would continue, for his own sake and to keep them alive through his memories. A cold wind swept all his thoughts and emotions away as cold detachment took over once again.

He walked back to the berm and looked over the palisade, the guards took a step back from him, their instincts told them this was the best choice. Ethan looked over the horde of undead, the guards thinned them a little but the mass of them kept approaching. For him, this was the perfect testing ground. Pointing his staff at the front he cast his frozen prison.

A disk of ice started to appear under the zombies feet that quickly spread out until it reached around five meters in diameter. Some zombies slipped outright while others got slower. Ethan saw an ever-increasing wind blowing over the disc, the wind circled around the disc and slowed the zombies until they froze. Shackles appeared from the disk and pulled the zombies down to the ground, locking them in place.

While it took some time soon the crack of bodies could be heard that exploded into ice crystals. Ethan just nodded, calm and collected as he pointed his staff at the zombies. But instead of killing them he cast his bulwark, Two impressive looking walls formed to the left and right from the horde. Forcing them into a narrower path that would give Ethan the chance to test his new special ability. He was a bit worried but the cold in his mind kept him focused.

Once the group of zombies was bunched up he used his new abyss of winter ability. The moment the magic was casted he dropped to one knee, his breathing was quick and forced, his heart pounded in his chest and he could barely see. His whole body trembled with fear of what he had unleashed. A quick look at his health and mana made him sweatHealth Points (HP): 5/420

  Mana Points (MP): 0/1100

He used…everything for this ability. Moments away from death as he watched in horror what happened to the zombie horde. First there was only silence, nothing seemed to move, no one even dared to take a breath. Even the zombies, mindless undead, stopped shambling towards the camp. Long frozen spikes appeared to the left and right of the horde, Ethan thought it were ice spikes like the ones he used so often. But then they moved. The sand under the zombies sagged down and revealed a long flat tongue, the ice spikes, he noticed too late, were actually teeth and with a mighty slam the mouth slammed shut around the horde of zombies.

He could see leathery skin near the base of the teeth but the rest was covered in chunks of ice. The thing vanished slowly, sand covered the massive head and then it was just gone, the only evidence that it was here were the remaining zombies that laid buried halfway in the sand. Whatever lived in the Abyss of Frostfall, he never wanted to visit that place. It must be some legendary creature if he could summon an image of it with a spell.

Ethan shook his head, not an image, even he felt dread when looking at that thing. He needed to be careful with that thing, very careful. His eyes rolled back in his head and the staff slipped from his hand as he surrendered to unconsciousness.

Nora coiled herself on his chest and watched over her companion, soon they would start on their quest to end this war.
