A week had passed, and the first day of Sarah’s I.T. job finally arrived. Sarah stepped out of the guest room wearing a short sleeve powder blue business shirt with a bck tie and a bck pencil skirt. Rachel was sitting on the couch and looked over Sarah from head to toe.
“You look very professional. I’d say you’re ready for this job.” Rachel said.
Sarah crossed her arms and sighed. “I feel like such a tool.”
Rachel moved closer to Sarah, resting her face on her hands. “Aw come on, you look great! And that skirt really shows off your hips and ass.”
Sarah Smirked. “Hmph. Well, sexyness aside I still have to work a job that I don’t want to work until I have the chance to work a job that I do want to work.”
Rachel stood up from the couch. “Look, I believe in you. But not every woman who tries out for the warriors makes the team. It’s best that you have a backup job in case things don’t work in your favor.”
“I’m guessing that working for the central processing office was not your main job?” Sarah asked.
“This isn’t about me. But yes, I did have my sights set on another career before settling on a government job.” Rachel said.
Sarah leaned against the kitchen isnd. “Oh really? And what was this dream job of yours?”
“I…I wanted to be a stage actress alright? Performing live in front of sold out crowds. The only problem is that I can’t sing.”
Sarah’s eyes went wide. She suddenly felt very uncomfortable. “Um, do you want to talk about it?”
Rachel waved her hands. “No time. We have to get you to work. Do you have your purse with your wallet and I.D. badge?”
Sarah reached down and picked up her purse. “Yes, but I’m still not used to it.”
“You’re a woman, you’ll get used to it.” Rachel said as she patted Sarah on the shoulder. “I will drive you to your job, it’s on my way to work anyhow.”
Rachel drove Sarah to her first day at her new job. After arriving at the office building, Sarah got out of the car. Once she did, Rachel jokingly called out “Have a nice day at school sweetie!” Sarah just smiled and flipped her off before heading inside.
Once inside Sarah reached into her purse and pulled out her I.D. badge. She then put it on around her neck and walked up to the security desk. The guards at the desk looked at her badge and let her through, although to Sarah it was more obvious that they were looking at her breasts.
Sarah took the elevator up to the floor where her job was located and walked up to the administrative assistant. “Hello, my name is Sarah FoxTail. I’m here to see Mr. Melbourn. It’s my first day.”
“Ah yes, Mr. Melbourn has been expecting you.” The admin then pressed a button on her speaker. “Mr. Melbourn, Miss. FoxTail is here to see you.”
“Send her in.” Mr. Melbourn replied.
Sarah Then walked into Mr. Melbourn’s office. He was a kangaroo with dark hair in a combover. Sarah took a seat while Mr. Melbourn typed away at his computer. When he was finished he looked at Sarah and smiled.
“Miss FoxTail! Welcome to Wild Tech. I was just reading up on you. You used to be human until you smelled the flower. Tell me, how is life as a fox working out for you?”
Sarah straightened up in her chair. “Well, at first it was a shock. But since then I’ve come to find it comforting to be my spirit animal.”
Mr. Melbourn went back to looking at his computer. “And it says here that you have 3 years of I.T. studies at college back in the human world.”
“Yes, I am qualified for computer repair as well as software instaltion and tech support.”
“Well then, I think you’ll fit in here just fine.” Mr. Melbourn then stood up from his desk and extended his hand. “Welcome aboard!”
Sarah stood up and smiled as she shook his hand. “Thank you sir.”
“Let me show you to your desk.” Mr. Melbourn then hopped around his desk and out of his office. Sarah followed him as he led her through aisles of desks where various employees were talking on headsets and typing away on computers.
When they arrived at Sarah’s desk, Mr. Melbourn gave her some final notes. “Lunch is at 12:00 and you get one hour. There is a cafeteria on the 3rd floor. You also get two breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The breakroom is located over there and has two vending machines, tables, chairs, and a couch. At the end of your shift please wipe down your headset. Again, welcome to Wild Tech!”
Mr. Melbourn then hopped back to his office. Sarah sat down at her desk and put on her headset. “Oh well, I might as well make the most of this.” She thought to herself. Sarah then answered the first call on her headset. “Wild Tech technical support. How may I help you?”
The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. Sarah helped customers with various technical problems ranging from viruses to helping with software instaltion. She even had a few friendly chats with her new co-workers during her breaks. Everything was going well until the end of the day.
Sarah had finished up her shift and was wiping down her headset when she was approached by Mr. Melbourn. “Ah Miss FoxTail, you’re still here. Listen, a few members from the night shift have fallen ill so you will have to take their pce tonight.”
Sarah could not believe what she had just heard. “But it’s only my first day.”
“I know, but you have shown such a great work ethic. And besides, it’s only for one night. You can do it.”
As Mr. Melbourn hopped away, Sarah cussed him out under her breath. “Asshole.” She then reached into her purse and grabbed the new phone that she had bought and called Rachel.
“Hey Rachel it’s me.”
“Hey Sarah. How was your first day?”
“It actually went pretty well. But I think I did too good of a job because my boss wants me to work the nightshift tonight.”
“What? But it’s only your first day!”
“That’s What I said! Anyway, the reason I’m calling is to tell you that there is no need to pick me up tonight. I’ll just get a cab or some other ride in the morning.”
“Alright. Well, have a good night. Stay safe.”
“Thanks. Bye.” Sarah hung up her phone and then put her headset back on to begin the nightshift. Unlike the dayshift, the customers of the nightshift were a complete nightmare to deal with. Either they were too stupid to understand the basics of a computer, like not knowing if the power cord was plugged in or not, or they were just pin mean.
Fortunately for Sarah the vending machine in the breakroom had energy drinks, and she needed them to get through the night. As time wore on Sarah noticed that only she and a few other employees were the only ones in the office. Sarah decided to ask the admin if she could leave early.
Sarah approached the admin desk with as much courtesy as she could muster. “Hi! Um, I was wondering since there are so few of us here and we’re not getting that many calls could I just go ahead and check out early?”
The admin looked up from her computer. “I’m sorry, but company policy is that all nightshifts st until 6:00 a.m.”
“Oh, well then can I have a word with Mr. Melbourn at least?”
“Mr. Melbourn went home hours ago. He never works the nightshift.” The admin then went back to working on her computer.
Sarah stood motionless for a moment, except for a strong twitch in her right eye. She then walked back to her desk and sat down, and let out a muffled scream into her hands.
Sarah endured more annoying calls when suddenly she overheard the admin talking to the te night cleaning crew. She was telling them to not use any vacuums as there were still employees trying to work. Sarah looked up from her desk and to her shock one of the members of the cleaning crew was the white wolf.
Sarah ducked her head as her heart began racing. This was the 3rd time she had crossed paths with him. Was this a sign? 3 times the charm, that’s what they say. Sarah would have continued panicking but then she heard someone speaking to her.
“Excuse me, but I need to sweep up around your desk. Will that disturb you?”
Sarah looked up to see that it was the white wolf who was talking to her. She couldn’t help but look into his eyes. They were an even brighter shade of blue than she first remembered. “What? Oh! No, no, no. You go right ahead. Sweep away!”
“Thanks.” The white wolf said with a smile. As he was sweeping, the white wolf kept looking over at Sarah. Eventually, his eyes went wide as he stared at her. “Hey, I’ve seen you before.”
Sarah lowered her head and sighed. “Yeah, you probably know me best as Treadmill Girl.”
The white wolf shook his head. “No, before that. I remember you from earlier. You’re the fox that was sneaking a peek at my ass outside of the clothing store.”
Sarah immediately sat up straight. Her whole body went stiff. “Y-you caught that? I am so sorry!”
The white wolf could not help but chuckle. “That’s okay. To be honest, I was also checking out your ass. And your tail.” The white wolf then extended his hand. “My name is William WhiteFang.”
Sarah eagerly shook William’s hand. “Sarah FoxTail.”
“That’s a pretty name. Say, what time does your shift end?”
“I get off at 6:00 a.m., why do you ask?”
William scratched the back of his head. “I have to clean the other floors, but my shift is also over at 6:00. I was just wondering if afterwards you would like to get a cup of coffee with me?”
Sarah smiled. “Yeah, that sounds nice.”
“Great! I’ll meet you at the front of the building.” William then continued on with his cleaning duties. When she was sure that nobody was looking, Sarah swiveled around in her chair and thrusted her arms back and forth while mouthing “Yes!”
When the end of the nightshift finally came, Sarah wiped down her headset as fast as she could, grabbed her purse, and raced down to the front of the building. Sure enough, there was William waiting for her, now wearing a white polo shirt and a pair of khaki pants.
William smiled as soon as he saw Sarah. “Hey there! Are you ready to go?”
“Yep!” Sarah replied. “So is this coffee pce far? I’m kind of tired from working all night.”
“Don’t worry, it’s only a block away. It should be a short walk.” William and Sarah then headed out towards the coffee shop. The sun was rising and the streets were mostly empty. Upon reaching the coffee shop, Sarah saw a sign out front that read “GOURMET COFFEE. OPEN 24/7.”
“Open 24/7 huh? I’ll have to remember this pce the next time I have to work the nightshift.” Sarah said to William.
William opened the door for Sarah. “After you.”
“My, such a gentleman.” Sarah entered the coffee shop and William followed behind. Since it was so early, the coffee shop wasn’t full yet. Sarah and William went to the front counter and pced their orders. They then found a table to sit at.
“So, tell me about yourself Sarah.”
Sarah sipped her coffee. “Well, I’m originally from the human world. I was out on a camping trip with my friends when I found and sniffed a weird flower. The next thing I know I’m an anthro fox, I’ve been teleported to another dimension called the WildLands, and I’ve been living with a lesbian racoon named Rachel for the past week.”
William took a bite of his muffin and washed it down with his coffee. “Wow. That has to be the wildest week ever.”
Sarah couldn’t help but ugh. “Yeah, I guess it is. So what about you? What’s your story?”
“I was born in the WildLands. I have an older brother named Patrick, he’s currently married with a daughter named Lisa. As kids we moved around a lot because of our parents' jobs. I recently graduated from college and have been doing odd jobs here and there. Being a custodian is the most recent one.”
“I was about to start my senior year of college back in the human world before beginning my new life as a fox. This job is actually my first. My parents always wanted me to focus on studying.” Sarah took another sip of her coffee. “What’s your age, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I’m 21.” William said as he finished his muffin.
“Really? I just turned 20. So, do you have any hobbies?”
“Well, I do like to work out. Aside from that, I love video games.”
Sarah’s eyes went wide with delight. “Really? Me too! Please tell me that Nintendo exists in this world.”
William chuckled. “Don’t worry, it does. As does Pystation and XBOX. Maybe we could get together on a weekend sometime and py Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?”
Sarah put her hand to her chest. “Oh I would love that! It feels like forever since I’ve pyed.”
“With what you have been through in just the past week, I’m not surprised.”
Sarah and William ughed together at the statement. They then looked down at the table to see that their hands were touching. They both pulled their hands back and finished their coffees.
“Well I should be heading back to my apartment.” Sarah said. “I am super tired from being up all night and my roommate is probably worried about me.”
“How about I give you a lift?” William suggested. “My car is in a parking garage just across the street.”
Sarah put her purse over her shoulder. “Thanks. You’re a really nice guy, you know that?”
William shrugged his shoulders. “What can I say? My mother raised a gentleman.”
William drove Sarah back to her apartment building. They exchanged phone numbers so that they could keep in touch. When Sarah got back up to the apartment, Rachel was getting ready to leave for work.
“There you are! So how was the nightshift?” Rachel asked.
Sarah dropped her purse and plopped down on the couch. “Exhausting. The customers who call in at night are either stupid, mean, or both. But it wasn’t all bad.”
Rachel’s ears perked up at the st part. “Oh? How so?”
“Well, you’re not going to believe this, but do you remember that white wolf whose ass I was looking at when you took me clothes shopping on my first day here?”
Rachel leaned on the couch. “What about him?”
“He was working as a custodian during the nightshift. His name is William WhiteFang and he remembered me! As it turns out, he was checking out my ass as well! Anyway, he took me out for coffee after work and drove me back to the apartment.”
“So, you went on a date with a hunk huh?” Rachel said with a smug look on her face.
Sarah quickly turned and looked Rachel right in the eye. “It was not a date! All we did was get some coffee and talk a little bit.”
“Did you make pns to see each other again?”
Sarah bit her lower lip. “Well, yeah.”
“Then it was a date.”
Sarah rolled back on the couch. “Oh shit you’re right.” But the more Sarah thought about it, the more she enjoyed it. William was a really nice guy. Hopefully they would have more in common.
